Now here’s a snippet from the patent –
A method, system, and computer-usable medium are disclosed for controlling unauthorized access to encrypted application program code. Predetermined program code is encrypted with a first key. The hash value of an application verification certificate associated with a second key is calculated by performing a one-way hash function. Binding operations are then performed with the first key and the calculated hash value to generate a third key, which is a binding key. The binding key is encrypted with a fourth key to generate an encrypted binding key, which is then embedded in the application. The application is digitally signed with a fifth key to generate an encrypted and signed program code image. To decrypt the encrypted program code, the application verification key certificate is verified and in turn is used to verify the authenticity of the encrypted and signed program code image. The encrypted binding key is then decrypted with a sixth key to extract the binding key. The hash value of the application verification certificate associated with the second key is then calculated and used with the extracted binding key to extract the first key. The extracted first key is then used to decrypt the encrypted application code.
Sounds like a means of counteracting Geohot’s hack. If it isn’t patchable by a firmware update then this’ll likely do it.

knowing Sony, they will probably cut production on the PS3′s as soon as they can and release a PS4 or just a newer version of the PS3′s like they did with the slim models, he 40gb, 60,gb, etc. and include that feature in the hardware. so i say all existing PS3′s are about to become very valuable soon.
All the fat models are already discontinued. They only sell the slims now.

ok well the fact is that this is a patent not JUST for the ps3 exploit, this applies to the wii, xbox 360 or any other so called “softmod”. The Geohot exploit woudl never be able to be patched and they knew it so this was their come back but seriously, other then the famous Geohot (who now has no choice but to stop on the ps3) is going to quit…. There was always laws against what we do here and this is no different. Just another blockade in the road that all we do is walk around. I dont think this should or will slow anything down in the world we call modding.

This patent does have the nice added bonus of letting people know exactly how the encryption system works… a good piece of knowledge for anyone who wants to attempt to break it/find a work around.

Is it just me , or am I the odd one out, I actually like buying games for my PS3, i dont feel so guilty then for the ones that are not purchased that I play on the DSi, Wii, 360, PSP and the PC…..
I never rush out for a new title on PS3, its nice to goto Blockbusters and buy a used title, a few months old for LESS than what a blank BLU RAY is gonna ever cost me…..

Guys…REALLY, no one gives a flying fuck about the stupidness you have to say, this is pretty big news for the ps3 scene’s growth. Stop being a bunch of muppets and sit patiently while people are trying to put this exploit to use.
Geohot has made great contribution to other systems in the past and is someone who does not bullshit when it comes down to cracking systems.
For those of you who keep doubting this exploit, that’s fine. However, stop coming around these threads irritating and trying to offend us, there’s absoloutely no need for it, sit and wait patiently for the exploit to be used and lead us somewhere.
