Hack your PlayStation 3

One of these days.

January 26, 2010

geohot’s PS3 Exploit Released

Geohot has released his PS3 exploit to the masses… This particular exploit is for research purposes only; it won’t serve the average user any real purpose. So now it’s on you — all you hardcores out there.

A couple things you should know:

  1. You need a non-Slim PS3;
  2. You need OtherOS installed.

Once you’ve soldered the appropriate connections (see pokemehere.jpg) and have loaded whatever Linux distro with OtherOS, you’re all set… Download the exploit below and:

Compile and run the kernel module.

When the “PRESS THE BUTTON IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS” comes on, pulse the line circled in the picture low for ~40ns.
Try this multiple times, I rigged an FPGA button to send the pulse.
Sometimes it kernel panics, sometimes it lv1 panics, but sometimes you get the exploit!!
If the module exits, you are now exploited.

This adds two new HV calls,
u64 lv1_peek(16)(u64 address)
void lv1_poke(20)(u64 address, u64 data)
which allow any access to real memory.

The PS3 is hacked, its your job to figure out something useful to do with it.

Let’s face it, this “hack” from geocock was a load of bullshit even before he’d stopped sucking his mom’s tits.

Its clear from his explanation that he couldn’t hack the ps3 this way hence the bullshit “your job to go figure out what to do next” and “just coz I can’t do anything more doesn’t mean I couldn’t do it” – what a major fucktard this guy is.

Sony will actually be loving the extra free press the PS3 is getting from this and won’t be in ANY-WAY bothered that this little shit has claimed to hack the PS3.

It’s unhacked, it will stay unhacked, and that’s the way it should be.

If you do some google searches for YLOD PS3 fix, you can find a method that fixes (using a heat gun that you can get from a hardware store or online) this YLOD issue. However I have done this to a few PS3′s and I can tell you the fix generally only lasts no more than a month. What you can aquire from this temporary fix though is the ability to access your PS3′s old files and copy them to an SD card or external HD. What the fix does is re-melt the solder points on 4 areas of your ps3′s main board. However you do have to completely take it apart and void the warranty (but I imagine that does not matter at this point).

It is a 1 hour fix if you have never opened the system before maybe 2.

:) Good Luck (it’s rather easy, no soldering, just use a heat gun to re-connect weakened solder points).

Aren’t you bright. Didn’t it occur to you that MAYBE Sony is watching sites like these? Just like they were with the PSP? I don’t think that there’s a mass company email whenever someone comes close to breaking PS3 code, just the people who need to know.

Comment by dylan
2010-02-01 12:39:12

your right why tell people who code the updates they dont need to know ps, theres no guy chillin at a computer watching this site getting paid i would bet what happens is some little snitch finds the post and informs sony stop being so dramatic “oh theres someone watching” bullshit they find out by random snitchs thats why it somtimes takes awhile to patch

Actually, sorry, but ur wrong. Sony does stay up to date with all these sites. Especially this one. In fact, not only do they read the posts such as this one, but they also read the comments so that they kno what people have to say about cfw, hacks, requested features, etc.
Sony MUST stay up to date with posts so that they kno what’s going on, and if something BIG does happen, like recently quoted in the last post, ” THE PS3 IS HACKED ” they have an early start to react.

Sony does look at all these sites, especially this one, and they even read the comments. !

I can create a php script to monitor RSS feeds than email them to whom ever i want if specific events happen on feed of sites i have it watch.. Adding two HV calls and gaining access to real memory is very hacked I’d say.

Now STFU and crawl back under your rock.

Gaining read & write access to the memory is one of the biggest hacks you COULD do. It’s a very, very low level hack, allowing your higher level ones (homebrew, backups etc..) to be developed. Stop acting like an asswipe and actually learn.

If he the memory can be modified, custom images etc.. can be put INTO the memory, to then be read by the PS3 and, depending on the nature of it, flashed to the PS3.

So please, shut up.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I go into news posts about serious hacking, expecting that these hacks who took loads of effort and understanding far above my own level would lead to me getting free things. Instead of giving props I whine.

I am an inconsiderate bastard child. I have not graduated from highschool and I am still dependent.

I use expletives throughout my logically erroneous opinions, because I cannot properly express myself.

I am content with being an ungrateful ignorant fuck.

Hey Guys,I have a question pls,
This “Hack” will it eventually lead to me being able to run games off my harddive? Also ,if it does will that mean no online play? Cause if i can’t play online and talk to my buds then this “Hack” is not really for me. I’m sure it would be great for those that want to play Single player games but I’m a multi-player type a guy. Any ideas on if I’ll still be able to go online, I know the Other system can when it’s hacked.Yes, i know that you eventually do get caught and banned on the other system and that’s kinda of what I’m thinking will happen on the PS3. What do you think?

I wish I copied the quote from Aezore (or #ps3dev), but it appears that Hypervisor access does not grant us access to the keys. He established we need to do something along the lines of intercepting signals from the HV to the isolated SPE, which he analogued to “hitting a bullet out of the air”. So, in short, the door is open, but there is no no light switch to be found, unfortunately.

Sorry mate that is beyond the realm of the probable.

Windows 7 would only run on the ps3 if it was basically rebuilt from the ground up. Windows in general is design to run on x86 architecture systems (i.e processors that Intel and AMD) and will not work on a Cell processor (which is fundamentally PPC).

Unless of course, you just want to virtualise Windows 7, but with such limited ram I dont think it would be worthwhile.

Comment by dumbass
2010-02-02 01:46:43

its not fundamentally ppc, it IS ppc since cell uses the ppc instruction set.

but yes, it will never be able to run wintows 7 unless ms codes in support for ppc, and seeing as ms hasant supported anything but x86 since the 80s its not going to happen. and besides, the ps3 doesent meet the requirements for windows 7 either.

people really shouldnt toy with something they do not understand, this is a great feat by cracking open the memory there are tons of possibilities even for the average fanboy as well such as emulating ur fav x86/64bit operating system, or even playing windows games directly off linux using wine or qemu, however advice to all do not use the limited restricting operating systems like yellow dog, to unlock the full potential of the puppy and convert it into a full fledge PC/media,gaming unit it would recommend ubuntu 8.04

Comment by Jin
2010-01-28 05:24:06

lol and what games are you thinking of playing? diablo 1? dues ex? 256mb is not enough memory to play most modern day games, not too mention any possible overheads that WINE may or may not create. That is also assuming you have a version of WINE that supports/emulates PPC, which I believe as of yet has not been developed.

Then there is the small point of 3D graphics drivers.

So yeh I think full fledged PC/media gaming unit is a bit far fetched.

Maybe one day hopefully in the not too decent future we will have 3D graphics drivers for the RSX and then we can test the bounds. Then hopefully we will at least have a fully fledged linux media unit. Bring on BOXEE on ps3. I have serious doubts about running anything x86 on ps3, but I guess it is possible.

Just to be clear, I believe George Hotz’ hack is awesome and look forward to the possibilities this could lead to, just wanted to set a few things straight.

Feel free to prove me wrong. I would certainly like to be lol.

-playing backups still is not practical only certain people who know how to talk to linux and make it their bitch so they can punk around the ps3′s powePC architecture and get passed sony’s limitations, last I check easiest way to do this was off a host PC stream the rip over a network. Someone still needs to make the iso/brrip loader its obviously possible since people like ben heck can easily do it by now, oh yeah and fuck duel boot all u need Linux with all the fixins and you got a slammin unit best thing bout it is its free.

He lost my respect with calling out Geohot, The man is of his word and with what he did on the ps3 in a short time of period took people…. oh right no one’s even did what Geohot has done.

SKFU has a big mouth and not enough talk to support his answers or I should mainly say opinions, he’s just another kiddie on this site like the rest of us who post here.

Well I have to agree with the real Marc on this one …… Geohot said he hacked it-.- but he didn’t hack it yet. He even got a BBC interview and correct me if I’m wrong didn’t the devteam hack the iPhone and geohot released it before the devteam ….. Maybe geohot didn’t hack it cuz if he did release piracy or other hacks the Feds would be at his door instead he is showing us the way:-P

The u64 lv1_peek(16)(u64 address) and void lv1_poke(20)(u64 address, u64 data) which allow any access to real memory give the potential of patching the memory to run unsigned codes, this opens the possibilities.

Once I’m finished with the PSP go I’ll take a look at this that’s if the others don’t get to it before me, currently I think all the noobs that don’t know what this “hack” is should just leave it as all they are looking for is a way to run back-ups

I think marc is just hot headed, a wise man once said when there’s a smoke a fire follows afterwards.

Hello all

I have had a brief look at what geohot accomplished so far, and I can see that there is a lot of potential, however the accentual “exploit” that marc and many others are looking for would need much work but note this is the first step, you must remember that the mammary is a vital part of any system, (basics)

Unfortunately I won’t be working on this as I’m very busy, as soon as I get some free time I’ll be on it.

I think marc need to look at the following

It means that developers now have access to the hardware (CPU, GPU without the restriction of the Hypervisor, access to the internal memory and so on) from within LINUX.

Once a video driver is coded we could enjoy the full 3D on Linux. I imagine running Wine and playing WOW on the PS3 just for the heck of it. :) Or CS, HL through Steam. On a PS3.

Also, full access to the internal memory could result in a CFW and open doors to other possible software exploits, easier methods. Time will tell. :)

Marc, learn something with me:
“Hacking (English verb to hack, singular noun a hack) refers to the re-configuring or re-programming of a system to function in ways not facilitated by the owner, administrator, or designer.
The terms “hack” and “hacking” are also used to refer to a modification of a program or device to give the user access to features that were otherwise unavailable.”
so i think it is correct to say GeoHot hacked ps3. agree? dumb ass… what a looser, get a life!

“Geohot DID claim he HACKED the ps3… and you said it yourself that this is just an exploit.”

The exploit is the allocate / deallocate of memory and writing to it, while to HV thinks it free and use it for it self to run code from his level.

The hack is to insert with this exploit 2 HV calls to read and write in every area of the memory.

A very mighty hack done with the exploit. No very comfortable and unuseable for the normal user but its a extremly mighty tool to get controll over the system. Great hack, follow up work can be done with it. Thank you geohot :)

IF they get to decrypt the keys on the fat ps3,they can later on make an exploit using an aplications via game or make a hacked save game file like they did on the wii with zelda. And since you don’t need linux to use the exploit via an aplication on the original menu of the ps3 it may be used on slim ps3 aswell And make a CFW like they did on the ps3.2-3 months more and we have the hack for ps3,thank you hackers!I f**** love to hack all I can,If I could hack my toilet I would do it lol.

Sounds like wishful thinking to me:
1) A hacked game save is not likely, since we do not know how game saves are processed.
2) You /do/ need linux to use the exploit.
3) The final mod will likely be modchip-based since this exploit already involves glitching the memory bus

a softmod is posible on the ps3 since it gots large storage space all the hacked stuff can go in there easy, for backup games ps3 bluray games since they are like 20gb big, they could make a usb loader and load the ps3 iso games from Hdd, how expensive is a external hdd not much I rather tranfer iso files to an hdd than buy a fricking bluray writer which is like over 100$ and then you have to spend money on the bluray disc.JUst give the hackers and developers some times the hard stuff just went trough now all we need is to get the things necesary to fully hack ps3,I mean come on they have acces to this directories now right? it won’t be so hard, the really hard and great job it was to get to this point.thanks to geohot for his hard work!

Aw man, not to crap all over the party, but I think the PS3 file system may be restricted in file size. I remember one time I tried to copy over a 4+ GB video file and I got a file system error (it right proper format and codec etc).

Unless it’s possible to load the iso’s from another file system partition from the PS3′s OS, we may be stuck to disk based backups. Which really in the long run isn’t as expensive as buying games, but up front is quiet a dish out if you don’t already have the hardware.

Alternatively, they could create a USB load method, but that will be limited to large USB sticks, since NTFS formatted external drives apparently don’t work (mine don’t..:().

I don’t know, I’m just speculating and sharing my theory’s based on what little I’ve attempted with my PS3 Phat.

Ps3 uses a proprietary file system which does support files over 4gb. You can stream/copy files over the network onto the ps3 that are over 4gb.

Ps3 can only read FAT file systems externally. FAT is restricted to 4gb.

If things got to the stage where CFW was possible, NTFS support could theoretically be implemented. Otherwise, iso should be fine on the ps3′s internal drive.

Marc, are you one of those pussy kids no one likes and has no friends? Seems like it. You’ve managed to alienate yourself on this thread, not one poster cares to even say one nuteral or nice thing about you, nor your comments – Troll.

Why don’t you take the dick out of your ass, there’s no “ass hole of the year” trophy for your fucking PSN account you fucking loser.

Talking what shit? I stated what I seen, I read this post, I didn’t see anything about fuck all being hacked, I seen exploit found and released – not “PS3 HACK’D TO RUN CFW!” – with that said, your argument is entirely irrelevant on here based on those facts, maybe you should go on Geohots blog where it apparently says what you argue and bitch there. But haha wait, you’re just a fucking troll and gotta go on EVERY other blog/forum you can and be a fucking tool. Since you got so much time to waste (no life clearly) why don’t you jump on winmatrix.com and troll there thread too?

That’s where all my “shit” started and ended. Pretty bad you’ve been insulted so much you can’t keep track of shit, that or you clearly can’t comprehend English.

With that said my last post was just a CONTRIBUTION of thoughts to the scene – all accurate and true facts, unlike your comments which contribute nothing. All you’ve done is bitch about GeoHot, and flame-war with people – Congratulations.

The funny part about it all is, you claim he’s done latterly zero, meanwhile here we are 3 years sine the PS3 finally came out and NO ONE has even been able to say they found as little as a “potential” exploit, meanwhile Geohot has managed to find A exploit. Sorry but props to the guy, he’s done more than you have or anyone else has and achieved something, so shut your fucking mouth you disrespectful ignorant douche guzzling bitch.

In the end, I personally don’t care if this exploit leads to anything in any direction. I haven’t made any stupid ignorant claims “FINALLY ISO LOADING!” etc. Those that have, sure let them have at it, what ever makes them happy. It’s kinda sad you get a hard-on for bursting peoples bubble, what a miserable life you must have. I know I haven’t read any claims by Geohot on here or on a few other places or the article posters claiming they’ve achieved it so anything can be done. It’s been left as “an exploit”, period. Even if we can get full power on Linux, that will be outstanding, than you’ll be able to run simulation software and providing the PS3 is as POWERFUL as they all claim it could run non-native games to a degree, and obviously run native programs at full power, versus the non-existent RSX access we have now.

Sorry but the PS3 has been technically hacked, it’s just not gonna be everything the masses may expect or want.

This is a good start for everyone who want’s to continue this hack, but the problem is if the full cfw is released sony might ban us from playing online just like what they did on PSP & xbox when it was hacked, coz remember we sign-in to psn first before we get connected to the game server. It is possible to play iso games but the thing is sony will always come up with a solution. Geo also said that he will “not continue to do this hack coz he needs to go back to his regular life”. I just hope that someone can continue to improve this exploit! nice work Geohot!

Well of course, that goes without saying, and an update will likely be issued that excludes the OtherOS, however it goes without saying that a hacked console and netplay just dont go together, a choice usually has to be made between the two or you simply have to own two consoles. Sony should be able to see CFW with ease but all you have to do is not go online, you can´t win at every battlefield.

it is not possible to play iso games. ps3 uses fat. fat doesnt allow files bigger then 4 gb. so you need a program lik usbutil for ps2 that can split a iso in multiple files en put them on fat drives. ps3 games are like 5 times bigger than ps2 games.

and what is this hack, he has acces to something. but he didnt do anything to it. so the one that can make something out of this did hack the ps3. not geohot. he only showd the road to rome. i didnt say that he is not doing anything. i am just saying he released a exploit, but they also did on pspgo, but it still isnt hacked yet

but who knows, maybe he HAS done something and dont want to release it.

you dont go this far and then quit right….

One of the main reasons your all not gonna get this ISO loading ps3 your all looking for is because this is all been acheived in Linux and not in the xmb of the ps3, so anything that could be seen coming from the memory would still only mean a clear visual of it and no actual full control over it, when the commands are being sent out by the user to all of the other locations and some 3D software for the ps3 linux is made maybe then we could get somewhere on this scene, but until then he we just see a read/write path which is excellent for the hackers out there ready to have a go at this

Comment by Jin
2010-01-28 07:57:08

(correct me if im wrong) I don’t it is likely that you could have iso loading in linux. XMB is different beast to linux and therefore would require some sort of emulation.

What seems more logical is reverse engineer XMB to the extent where you could remove the security (maybe fake the security SPE) so it could run backups.

Whether that can be done using this exploit or one that may follow from this remains to be seen. I may have a look at this if I have time.

this is deffinetly going to lead to what everyone has been looking for!! im sure there are people right now reversing the fw.

and for the ppl saying that this means nothing because its just memory access, it means everything!! if you take out your hdd and put it in a laptop, it will all be encrypted. this exploit will lead to a fix in that problem. i am NOT updating 100% until the CFW comes out, because it will eventually…its just a matter of time, and waiting.

hello …

reverse engineering the XMB would get SONY to have the right to sue you .. LOL

till then all i can see is that you would make a perfectly cool video game system become a not so perfectly cool PC that runs fine under linux … WOW!

i’m amazed at what hackers do, really! i think they are good to help us find better ways of protecting our systems. better & more expensive ways, i’m sorry guys if the PS3 runs pirated games somehow, someday, then either you won’t see a PS4, or it will be that expensive that ONLY the rich would own it, maybe there’s something good to it then, go on do your thing & make the future ones be for a niche market, i’ll be in it …

but on the other hand, the actual system will suffer so much if piracy occurs, that i’m not even sure i’ll want the next one, most good developers would fly away from the console for being hard to code on & not a good ROI.

well, if i want a big pc, i can build myself one, for now i’ll just enjoy my PS3, will do the updates & have fun with my games without feeling guilt or being scared of anything, i’m even starting to love some MP games …

have fun guys doing whatever you want & just know that to all action there is an equal but opposite reaction & someday somehow, you will be the one being hacked …

cheers!

@birdman: read up ( http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/power/cell/documents.html#6 ). PS3 will require a modchip, and this exploit will probably only lead to partial memory dumps, and maybe some new calls, but nothing substantial. The CellBE was designed to have hardware security from the ground up. It will be difficult if not downright impossible to hack (IBM architects are quite good IMO)

Specifically: http://www.vmecritical.com/pdfs/IBM.Feb07.pdf
Search for “software” (no quotes), and read the surrounding sentence.

So I do believe he did do something good, but overall, it’s probably going to need someone who actually wants to finish the job to actually finish the job…

By the way, do any of you follow GeoHot on Twitter? I think since the day I started looking at his tweets, he pretty much told everyone that they are all losers and to fuck off cause he won’t finish a full hack for anything…

Please read: http://www.vmecritical.com/pdfs/IBM.Feb07.pdf

The hack will take time to process and will have to be modchip-based. The CellBE was designed from the ground up with hardware security, so we’re going to have some hardware-level bypassing to do. Not saying its impossible, but will be very, very hard. Hopefully this leads to some memory dumps though.

Comment by Dave
2010-01-28 21:01:49

Soo what are you saying exactly though? Are you saying that in order for people to have a cfw, the ps3 must first be modded???

I don’t understand…

Comment by Nirvana
2010-01-29 11:43:55

I’m saying this: We have cracked the software side (the Hypervisor, from now on, HV). There is more security on the PS3, within the CellBE itself. We will not get root keys or even good memory dumps from the HV exploit itself. We can however, use it to dump some memory and maybe find a loophole (badly written code that we can take advantage of).

We need a modchip designed to fake challenges/responses from the HV to the CellBE, in order to trick the PS3 into thinking we are playing nice. However, as of now, we have no idea what challenge/responses the HV and Cell are sending to each other. So, this exploit will not produce a hack, but we can get memory dumps and begin to see what exactly the HV and Cell are saying to each other.

In simpler terms: The exploit is still some time away. And it will definitely require a modchip because I can’t see IBM leaving a giant security hole int he Cell

Altough it’s nice to capture all these HV calls and stuff from a plain (not encrypted) lv1 binary, but this will never lead to a hacked PS3.Let’s have a look. The major security architecture on the PS3 is called the “Secure Processing Vault” and is the most important thing regarding “hacking” the PS3.There is NO WAY for the PPU or even the HV to gain access to the SPU, which is an application running inside of an isolated SPU.Well you can kick out the isolated SPU, like geohot mentioned, but this gives you nothing, as ALL the encryption and execution of applications (HDD encryption, app encryption, decryption, executing, signature checking, root key extraction) happens inside the isolated SPU.To run homebrew on the PS3 you would have to reassemble the whole functionality from the SPU inside a binary running on the PPU.For this you will need the root key. The root key is stored in hardware (not even close to the things on the iPhone). The root key cannot be extracted by any software or hardware means and is essential to ALL encryption/decryption, executing and checking routines. The only way to get the root key is inside of an isolated SPU, as it is kick-starting the hardware encryption facility. There is no other way to do that !Let’s just assume that geohot or some other guys are able to break into the local store of the isolated SPE. There they will just find some encrypted binaries. The key for decryption is encrypted by the root key !You won’t get anywhere without the root key.Let’s assume that someone managed to do all those stuff from the isolated SPU on the PPU and creates a CFW.There is still a secure booting environment. The first module loaded/bootet is integrity checked by the hardware crypto facility utilizing the root key. So you have also to address this booting stuff. Again, no root key, no booting. So there’s always runtime patching you might ask ? Not possible on the PS3 because the hardware crypto facility is able to check the signatures whenever it wants to. And which part is responsible for this

Exactly, the isolated SPU.So if you kick out the isolated SPU the system will not boot/run anymore. The PS3 is neither an PSP nor an iPhone. It’s the most secure system architecture of this time !The girl behind this stuff, Kanna Shimizu, is not somebody. Messing around with this is not like saying Bruce Schneier is a n00b.Btw.: forget about all those stories, that certain hackers are or will be employed by SONY. That’s nothing more than another urban legend.@geohot It is OBVIOUS that the HV is PPC. The Cell BE is a PPC architecture, you know ;-) Better read those IBM papers in first place !

Comment by LastmanOut

As Unknown and Nirvana point out there’s documented papers showing what the security model of the system is based around. It’s based in hardware with the intend that even if you get hypervisor or level 1 access you still can’t get the root key from there since it’s never in memory and it’s not accessible by the hypervisor.

What can be accomplished depends on whether there is a patch issued by Sony to stop the memory read access that was found, if there’s a patch it could indicate that Sony and IBM believe there’s a threat looming. However since they expected someone to eventually break-in and gain hypervisor level access to the system they surely have other counter measures in place, hence the hardware based root key and encryption sequences and isolated spu’s.

NO!!! THATS THE THING WITH PS3′S THEIR NOT LIKE IPODS/IPHONES!

once you update, you have no choice but to either re-install the current firmware, or a later firmware. ( depending on how many updates you missed )

you CANT go back to an earlier firmware

Comment by DSpider
2010-01-30 03:21:35

Think PSP (latest, Pandora-proof models). You can only go forward with the firmware.

Sony can definitely downgrade, but they won’t. Use the warranty and you get it back formatted (you lose saved games, and EVERYTHING) and with the latest firmware installed.

I can see why you would think you could just format and start all over again, because the firmware is installed on the HDD. But if you format it in a PC will it brick the PS3 ?

Comment by LastmanOut
2010-01-31 16:59:34

No you won’t brick the PS3 that way, it’ll just reformat the HD when you insert it and boot up. Then it’ll ask for the same firmware or a later revision.

I remember when the JTAG hack for the XBox 360 was first released. I thought it wasn’t anything amazing since we could just burn DVD+R DL’s for backups. I updated my console and prevented me from doing the JTAG. Then a couple months later I read about free DLC, XBLA, and load games from a internal/external HDD. DOH!

I went and bought a used PS3 just because of this exploit and I’ll never update past 3.10 unless confirmed the exploit still works on 3.15. In a couple of months the PS3 scene will develop something amazing. I have faith in them.

Does the slim ps3 got the same possibilities to get hacked once the fat ps3 got fully hacked out, getting hold of the keys and all. I suppose the two works pretty much the same way, and I guess once you got all the info, and might be able to create a modchip for it, the ps3 slim should be hackable too…

I hope this hack is the boost the ps3 community need to get their stuff going, get the developers going… I’m sure there is more than a few skillful guys out there who can get onto this. It’s just how motivated are they to get the job done? Not forget the PS3 is a 3 years old system… In PC years that is a pretty old machine to bother with… In another 2 it will be ancient…

People on this site act like 5 year olds…most of them probably are.

But anyway. This is big news. To all the people saying this isn’t a hack, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The first step of any hack is accessing restricted parts of the OS or the hardware. In this case, the processor. Something Sony doesn’t want us to be able to have access to. Bypassing that makes this a hack.

It’s not usable, but the first hack never is. The first hack for anything is always a proof of concept. Developers only need a few weeks or a month and there will be development. Time and lots of skill will turn this into a usable hack for the general community.

Yes the first step to a hack is finding an exploit, and in essence he’s found a loophole for memory. Unfortunately he hasn’t found a way to actually access the processor or the hardware encryption which contains the root key. If you read the security was designed with the expectation that someone would someday get access to hypervisor access, therefore they based everything in hardware.

I’ll sit back and wait for someone to show a proof of code running from the xmb.

Haha! Thats so cool. PS2 emulation anyone?
I wonder if this will have any effect on greater default XMB OS access.

So the PS3 is hacked ? Well that’s nothing more than an urban legend.

Altough it’s nice to capture all these HV calls and stuff from a plain (not encrypted) lv1 binary, but this will never lead to a hacked PS3.

Let’s have a look.
The major security architecture on the PS3 is called the “Secure Processing Vault” and is the most important thing regarding “hacking” the PS3.

There is NO WAY for the PPU or even the HV to gain access to the SPU, which is an application running inside of an isolated SPU.
Well you can kick out the isolated SPU, like geohot mentioned, but this gives you nothing, as ALL the encryption and execution of applications (HDD encryption, app encryption, decryption, executing, signature checking, root key extraction) happens inside the isolated SPU.

To run homebrew on the PS3 you would have to reassemble the whole functionality from the SPU inside a binary running on the PPU.
For this you will need the root key.
There is no other way to do that !

Let’s just assume that geohot or some other guys are able to break into the local store of the isolated SPE. There they will just find some encrypted binaries.
The key for decryption is encrypted by the root key !
You won’t get anywhere without the root key.

Let’s assume that someone managed to do all those stuff from the isolated SPU on the PPU and creates a CFW.
There is still a secure booting environment.

And which part is responsible for this ? Exactly, the isolated SPU.
So if you kick out the isolated SPU the system will not boot/run anymore.

The PS3 is neither an PSP nor an iPhone. It’s the most secure system architecture of this time !

This is great news and after having went through the whole evolution of PSP hacks, it’ll be fun to watch this advance from an exploit, to running apps, to a full on custom firmware.

I just hope that the PS3 community is smart enough to not ruin it all. Everyone needs to settle down with all of the silly petiness. We have much greater things to focus on. Much better days are ahead!

If it’s patchable and warrants a patch, Sony will patch it. Doesn’t matter it’s linux, Sony’s patching the console not linux that runs in the otherOS state. And you’re going to be waiting a long time, (as in never) for custom firmware on the ps3. Not happening.

Misson impossible for custom firmware.

What it leads to, remains to be seen. What it’s not going to lead to is custom firmware as that would require breaking a lot more security and the security in this case is hardware based, so software isn’t going to break it alone. Look at Geohot’s exploit, he needed to open the whole system up and apply the hardwire for the timing attack to just read memory and gpu access, he’s accessed a significant area however he’s not actually proven he or anyone else can currently run a game or anything else on the machine. People need to wake up and realize that just because the PSP was hacked to death, doesn’t mean the PS3 will be the same. It’s not the same situation. It’s a different security system to break.

I don’t see the point of Fw check bypasses. As the xbox360 shows a modified console on a network isn’t going to last long. In Nintendo’s case I think they’re happy having the Wii selling as well as it does. As others have commented it’d probably work best to have one console for online play and one for playing pirated games. Except then you wouldn’t get any of the trophies to show up on your account and obviously no online.

Having a modified console worked well in the PS2 era as there wasn’t much of an online gaming network aka (PSN or a Xbox-Live) or required mandatory updates to patch the system every now and then. It worked well on the PS2 since there wasn’t much to prevent you from playing undisturbed once you got the machine modded.

The PSP works well in that Sony released it so early that they left numerous gaping holes in the system which led to everything that’s out today for it. They’ve tried making it more secure via firmware updates and game requirements but it’s still an up-hill battle for them.

The xbox360 works for a while til Microsoft decides to issue firmware updates and Ban consoles and brick them. People play pirated games for free and it’s great til the system is banned from online play or almost bricked to death as many machines were in November.

I’m not fully understanding the first procedure but if a field pulse (or field programmable gate array (FPGA)) hardware wired button mod is required then wouldn’t that mean coders would have to also mod their PS3s to develop uses for this hack?
I think many have missed the fact that there is a small hardware mod to perform before the added HV calls.

Only good thing about this is that a possible modchip could be made if this shows any promise.

Comment by dave
2010-02-01 09:51:07

no, they wont have to mod it. atleast i dont think so. im almost 100% positive. hackers would just have to have an other os installed, like linux..ubuntu.

Comment by Nirvana
2010-02-01 12:23:13

Nope, something that pulses 40ns is absolutely required to add the HV calls.

This is called a timing attack (no one will read, but here’s some knowledge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timing_attack )

Basically, as you are making the PS3 work (removing memory allocations), you are glitching it. It eventually fucks up (read: timing attacks don’t always work, as anyone who’s ever programmed an HU card for DirecTV will testify). When you eventually glitch the memory, you have HV access.

the psp has been hacked for such a long time. sony has never made a completely new fw, just updates.

At most it might give insights into any opening in the hypervisor that might allow code to run, however since there’s still hardware security in place, running code is still not going to be possible without defeating the Cell’s security system. I’m betting on this leading to more understanding of the ps3′s system.

I’m not betting on CFW, or PS3 game piracy or running unsigned code at the very least until I see a proof of concept that everyone can download and run. I’m basically putting money down on this leading to only the possibility of finding out more about the system. That’s what it’s only use is at the moment, to use it and find out more, to explore and poke around for more stuff.

It is only a stepping stone to hacking the PS3. We probably won’t see anything useful for at least a month or two. If you want to be involved in the scene DO NOT UPDATE. I only went to 3.10 because Geohot himself said that the exploit works on that firmware.

If you want to play on the PSN or anything that forces you to update, you might as well buy another PS3 and use that as a ‘stock’ console and the exploitable PS3 as the homebrew console.

That is what I’m doing with my XBox 360s, one is for playing on XBox live and is completely stock. I buy/rent the games that I like for that console. While my other is JTAG’d and DVD drive flashed. You might think it’s a waste of money but remember how much money your saving from ‘testing’ out other games, downloadable content, and XBox Live Arcade games.

@mark

there’s a difference between hacks and homebrew software. Right now we need to finish hacking the whole security on the ps3 before we can start developing homebrew like what the wii has to do all those amazing god like things.

Unlike the wii though the ps3 has an incredible security system which has taken a long time to even get this far and you must understand that this is an achievement itself.

The second point to be made is how many people, with geohot’s set of skills, can help contribute. What he did is pure genius and sadly I don’t know other people out there who can do the things he can do.

The third point to be made as to how to get over this milestone with the security is to (obv) get a team together to get it fully hacked.

Power to the person who does all that leg work to get it all set up.

One other thing:that guy, geohot, did a VERY good job.Why all this flaming? That guy puts his time and efforts to do something useful for all of YOU,and not for personal profit. He didn`d ask for YOUR money,he didn`t ask for anything.I mean, what`s your issue here people?Bitching around about:”it`s hacked”,”no it`s not”,”shut up lame, you don`t know!”,etc?Wake up kiddos,ONLY good things can come up from this thing that geohot managed to pull out.Take it from an old gamer, and please don`t troll to other people. It`s a giant step here, don`t you think? That kid,did the (so called)unthinkable.Take some lessons. If you`re able to keep up,that is.Sorry for my big post, but…I guess it`s time to bury the hatchet, don`t you think? If we,the users, jump on each others throats, what the corporative snakes will do?Think about it.
Peace.

(not that two more system calls actually mean that it is hacked , he didn’t even run a hello world program… but let’s not get in to any of that for now).
AND NAW WHAT?

Now people with a brain use this to dump their HV and decrypt it to someday gain the access keys. Then the ps3 is truely unlocked.

To all those people asking “Now what?”
- He released his findings, now it’s up 2 us. And if u think “why us?” then that’s the reason to STFU and not ask stupid questions like that.
To all Flamers, Haters, Biters, Doubters: geohot did 1 step, u guys 0! In my count he wins – no amount of flaming is gonna change that!
To all the Spamers: FCUK OFF!!

To GeoHot: Seeeehhhr Geil, lass dir den scheiß nicht zu herzen gehen. Wenn dass wirklich das ist auf was wir seit 4 Jahren warten bist du dass für die PS3 was DaX für die PSP ist – ein Gott! *Schleim* ;-) Weiter so!

To Marc ( and anyone else misinformed and denying reality):

The best way I can think to explain it is with an example. If you own a jailbroken iPod touch you will know what I’m talking about. Geohotz made the jailbreak that I use, called blackra1n right? That does not automatically mean he made it able to play roms and free games on. That is the work of other coders. The main thing is, he opened the doors. Either wait for people to figure it out more, or do it yourself and show everyone how awesome you are (…)

Stop complaining and wait for further development with the exploit.

what about programming for modchips? why have people stopped trying to develop them and focus on softmod hacks?

Comment by mcdull
2010-02-09 23:49:29

mod chip usually havs a custom/hacked bios, without decrypting the PS3′s bios first, you can’t create a custom bios.
So, what geohot did is the first step to get everything else done.

Just passing by

I think the reason no one has “programming for modchips” is one or both of the following,

1, they don’t have any knowledge on loophole to hack (you must know the Blue ray encryption key(s) to boot backups plus the other keys that are stored encrypted on the isolated SPU)

2. they know that $ony got them by the balls, in the past producers of the ps2 mods, DMS3/4 Matrix infinity etc get shout down by $ony.

It only what I think anyway.

Im new to this and the title “PS3 Exploit Release” made me ever more curious as to what true potential is hidden within the console.

I applaud the exploit/hack/finding (whatever the hell you want to call it), and welcome the possibilities it may hold.

In my opinion, if i could program/hack or manunipulate past the lvl1 exploit i would want to share it with people who could add to, or help with it.

I have to be honest there is sooo much bullshit, bitching and pointless reading on this page it makes me laugh.

All the best with it, but i endured hundred and odd posts to be no further forward.

To UNDERSTAND THIS HACK STOP BRAGGING HERE GO READ HELP SECTION IN FORUMS

IN SHORT
at max this hack is good for emulators NOT BC that is all hardware even the software ps3′s had hard ware

this hack can never lead to backup loading or homebrew/cfw.without the cpu key(private)

secondly highly risky and unreliable to do but if it is done you have HV access still thats useless without the cpukey which geo said he would release but he didn’t

so because the cpu key wasnt released sony is relaxed and we r fuked and geo is famous

Man makes a Hello world script and everyone freaks out saying it will lead to nothing! You need whipout for it to work, blah blah blah.

Um, I’m sorry but I currently am playing N64 games, PSP games, and various other systems on my PSP off my memory stick.

There has to be a start somewhere and this is it. Anyone who is complaining that he is a “fake” or more correctly “he doesn’t know what he’s doing to he passed it off”, just shut up. Who cares if he doesn’t know, he got past something NO ONE else has. So he clearly has some knowledge.

Anyone else with me on this one? It’s whipout all over again!

Ok, lets just get the facts here. Came across this site while doing some more research on exploits and I’m at a standstill with my Slim version. If some morons would be doing research you could learn a few neat tricks to accomplish with the Gigabit Ethernet, such as adding more ram.

Now as for Marc. With full hypervisor access there is a lot that can be done. If one protocol is passed it’s a matter of time before it’s completely hashed out. Some of you uneducated don’t realise just how easy hacking is. I suggest for those lacking at least a bachelors or equivalent experience in Software Development, it’s kind of hard to see the big picture. So… in other words, one question for you. Conditional statements and Converse, do you grasp all the properties, and can you work those into mathematical formulae?

If so you can get into C++ and php with no problem. There are a handful of differences between the two, but they will give you a foot up. Branch out and you can easily pick up on others, maybe reading a dozen books, or just going to W3Schools and finding references. You can even start as a “noob” and work from html, just learning the basics, and then messing around. All over the internet you can find free scripts to use, and they are usually commented.

Anyways, start small. And you’ll notice that small things tend to lead to great feats.

Back to the subject. A problem with adding ram connected through the gigabit connect is that there is a ten percent loss in performance, but this is virtually unnoticeable. I don’t know if anyone who’s been rambling back and forth even owns a soldering kit, or has even taken apart and rebuilt their PC, let alone attempted it with the PS3. You can replace the whole motherboard with some knowledge. You can accomplish a lot, the more the PS3 gets unlocked the more control you have over every single thing the Cell Processor does.

That is WHAT it was invented for, and that’s why IBM launched some beast servers that outperform even multi-core beasts. Why? The Cell processor might look redundant to the naked eye. But it was actually originally thought up in the late 80′s. Because what is the human brain, but a super complex computing beast itself? The security locks on the PS3 are pretty beast, but that’s because Sony, Toshiba, and IBM and a budget of 400 million over a span of 4 years co-developed the processor for the PS3, and IBM used this to create even better Cell Processors.

So please tell me, MARC, is what Geohot did REALLY nothing? Not only does it open up more control, and give you more customizablity if you know linux, or even if you do some internet research. But dude, more ram, even if you can’t manage to bypass the lock on the GPU, you can use gigabit to run your linux off there. And no offense marc, but you didn’t do anything to disprove what Geohot did being labled a hack. Security exploit IS HACKING. And while he may not have jumped to pirating games, and hacking area 51 UFO documents like you probably believe exist… He opened up the beginning to turning your single PS3 into a cell powered supercomputer. With the extra ram you can actually run linux, and emulate Windows 7 fast as lightning.

It’s actually why I can care less about Xbox fanboys bragging about Microsoft Exclusives. I just play Windows Live on my PS3. Oh and beside’s, with side attacks, bypassing the retarded firmware that everyone thinks is the God in the computing world… You won’t be banned from PSN, or online play. But wait Marc, just wait, I’m not done with you yet.

To explain, the Core Processor is the future of computing. Virtualizing more processors? Even gaining access to the 8 full SPE’s just wow. But hey, I only gave you a simple overview. You want proof? Research. And I don’t mean google. Go pick up a book, or stfu. My PS3 outperforms my Dell 16 gb ram, 1TB drive, AMD like a champ. And while I may have a void warranty. You can purchase replacements for not too heft a price, and sorry to drop the bomb on ya, but linux kicks ass.

Can’t believe I come across sites like this expecting to learn a little more than I already know, only to find a bunch of people loud mouthing the specs of their systems right from the nearest google source, saying this is impossible etc. And even the people claiming to understand what Geohat has done, still lack anything more to provide. No offense, but any of you who sign up for the Class action lawsuit, I hope you all get imprisoned. Why? Because if you can’t rip your PS3 apart, and do something, if you aren’t a certified engineer, or at least more tech savvy than OMG Fedora has a MANUAL TO INSTALL THEIR DISTRO OMG I’M SO SMART… than you shouldn’t be allowed to us the other OS anyway. It’s more likely that you’ll be tempted to just install the Homebrew’s and you are practically suing Sony for making it damn hard for the amateurs to cheat with.

A. Get better at gaming.
B. Buy a computer if you lack education on this matter.
C. If you even think it’s impossible to emulate full blown Windows 7 without x86, than wow, you pretty much just spit your own face.
D. If you think that upgrading your computer or buying a powerhouse PC is anywhere as cheap as upgrading your PS3, you shouldn’t even own a PC to begin with.
E. If you lack knowledge, why bother commenting on a place called PS3 hacks. I don’t even have an account here, and I won’t bother making one. Why? Look at the level most of the visitor’s actual education in Networking, Engineering, etc. is.
F. I can think of a million reasons to speculate that most of you couldn’t even figure out how to use a keylogger, or the “ominous” Sub 7 back in the day. Nor do I bet you were even around for “Hack wars”. Seriously, where were you people? Exactly. Closest you’ve been to Schmoocon is youtube. And the closest most of you have come to hacking anything is using pre-rendered software.

Point I’m trying to make? Your unintelligent, premature fighting and rambling, (mostly MARC), is only a testament to the lowest pit of human scum can honestly boast an ego. Or pretend to understand the definition of a hack.

All of you, stop whining, stop arguing. None of you have anything more than a PS3. None of you know anything more than omg I fixed the YLOD with a heat gun woo hoo. Good job, you graduated from pre-school of the tech world, wait, no that wasn’t even the first semester. Get a clue, get a job, get a degree or stop calling yourselves hackers.

I bet most of you don’t even know about IPv6, nor do you know the struggles to exploit that yet. And hmmm… some UFO lunatic hacked the pentagon, yet you claim the PS3 is unhackable… Wow.
