Update: Geohot has shared a little status update concerning his PS3 hackjob… But first, know this: 1) Don’t expect any tool to be released by Geohot himself; 2) This hack does not work on the PS3 Slim; 3) The plan is to [hopefully] find and post the PS3 decryption keys so other hardcores can partake in the PS3 hacking fun. So thus far, here’s what’s up… To quote Geohot –
I have added two hypercalls, lv1_peek and lv1_poke. peek reads memory in real space(including all the MMIO), poke writes it. I can also add other arbitrary hypercalls as I see fit.
The hypervisor is complicated, it is written in C++ and is PPC, which I am not that familiar with yet.
Some people pointed out that I have not accessed the isolated SPEs. This is true. Although as far as doing anything with the system, it doesn’t matter. The PPE can’t read the isolated data, but it can kick the isolated SPEs out. Decrypt the PPE binary you need using the intact SPE and save the decrypted version. Kick out the SPE, and patch the decrypted version all you want. And interesting note, by the time you get to OtherOS, all 7 working SPEs are stopped.
Despite this, I am working on the isolated SPEs now(which I can now load).
Again, I suggest you keep your browser locked and loaded at Geohot’s PS3 blog. Much respect, George.

Judging from Geohot’s comment of receiving his PS3 a year and a half ago, I would safely assume that this is currently for the Phat, but that doesn’t mean of course that the same exploit wouldn’t work for the Slim. We would have to wait for further word from Geohot himself to clarify that.

Wishful thinking? There’s no way your gonna stream games to any console over a network. And a flash drive seems plausible, but for $50/16 gig, your better off just buying a 1 TB HDD for $100 and using a 2.5″ to 3.5″ converter.
It could be possible since the PS3 had a gigabit network card and if your have a gigabit router and gigabit network card on your pc that’s faster than using USB 2.0 like some people think you will be able to….You would have to write your own software to see a server on your PC as a internal HDD on the PS3…None of this is worth it in my opinion tho….

FAT and FAT32 file systems cannot store files larger than 4gb, meaning ISO loading is impossible on the ps3.

If isos needed to be stored on usb then you may have that issue, but then again mayb firmware could b hacked to read ntfs
sorry, but its NOT ext3, either straight up or a modified version of it. the ps3 USES FAT32.
but consider your argument: the max file size under ext3 is 2TiB (or roughly 2.2 terabytes if im not mistaken). the file size limit of fat 32 is 2gigabytes. its been shown that the ps3 CANNOT handle files over 2gb. so WHY then if it uses ext3 would that be the case?
also, as another testament to your failure, EVERY resource, INCLUDING sony, has said it uses fat32.
finally, there is NO difference between file systems in the regard you say in your last sentence. any file that can be read in ntfs could be read in ext3, ext4, fat64, etc. file systems DONT have any effect on how a file needs to be written.
now, to all those saying iso’s cant be read, any hack that gives full access to the system can rectify this. a custom firmware could give the option to reformat the hard disk with another file system such as ext3.

This is very encouraging news, I can’t wait to see what comes out of this in terms of homebrew on a next-gen level. I’m certainly hoping there is some kind of enforced block to running pirated game, as well as to Trophy cheating, but otherwise I’m very happy about the news. Definitely hoping we see some form of codec system for the built-in media player to expand supported formats.
And of course, if worse comes to worst, I’ll shell out for a second PS3 for normal use, and use my current one for homebrew etc, in the event that Sony blocks PlayStation Network services on hacked consoles.
Yea I would be interested in the homebrew if any of them know how to program for the Cell its going to take a long time before you get any decent homebrew for the PS3 if it ever gets hacked. Look how long it took the DEVs to figure it out ie. Quality of Launch titles compared to the ones that come out now are much better.

the ps3 hdd is NOT fat or fat32 man. if it was it would be impossible for me to have one of those 9GB movies saved on there….
Having access to the system software and Firmware should make it possible to allow the PS3 to recognize NTFS or other large file limit file system, it will probably be hard to do but possible.
Hey, who said that piracy killed the PSP? Everyone knows that about 85-90% of the games on the PSP are trash. Then you have the 10% that are actually worth purchasing. Now being the I have absolutely Zero coding skill a couple things that I would like to see available in a CFW are…
1. Make CFW that can read NTFS via USB 2.0 if not all File Systems
2. Allow user to boot from choice of device… USB, Internal HDD & Blu-Ray with any file system
3. Make the PS3 viewable in a Windows Network as a PC
4. Obviously make it run ISOs or backups on DVD, DVD-DL & Blu-ray
5. An xbox360 emulator would be bad azz, just so we can play 360 backups
I hope some can be implemented. I’d be happy if it will just allow backups to play.

Actually I’d like to fathom a guess that Mike probably does have some engineering or programming experience, or some experience with emulation source-side.
You have to look at it like this, you have a much more open platform on PCs with available APIs for software development, and as of yet there isn’t even a slight bit of progress regarding emulation of the 360 architecture on PCs. now consider that the PS3 was designed as a closed platform with no freely available API to use for the development of software, and consider that the hardware on the PS3 isn’t a whole hell of a lot more powerful than that of a 360, and you’ve run into a brick wall.
Generally emulation of any console architecture requires two to three times as much actual raw hardware power as the console in question, because it’s not just a matter of porting that console’s BIOS or OS kernel. Out of the box, the 360 OS kernel would be no more compatible with PS3 hardware than any other console’s would. You have to use software to emulate the hardware for the console you want to run, hence the term “emulator”, and this requires resources far greater than those of the PS3 if you want to emulate the 360.
Think about it this way: The SNES is a console over a decade old, with some pretty low-tech obsolete hardware to it, and yet, the PS2 and PSP, both with several times the hardware power of the SNES, can’t emulate a fair number of titles at full speed, particularly those that use the SuperFX chip.
That’s not to say, of course, that there won’t one day be a gutsy developer who will attempt it for the sake of trying, but such an emulator would never be even remotely playable.
It was just a suggestion, put the ideas out there, i don’t expect Geohot to do anything. I would be privileged to even have a CFW from anyone using his exploit

I’m happy to see this, but unhappy at the same time. Hopefully this will surpass the console emulation leaders of the Wii and PSP by adding full Dreamcast and PS2 emulation, as well as new homebrew, and who knows, would mods be possible for games like Fallout?
What I’m afraid of is definitely the people who will try to run PS3 ISOs, or be able to play all the PSN games they want. I just hope this doesn’t completely kill the PS3 like it did the PSP. And worse yet, I hope that this doesn’t create a cheating issue for the PSN. I’d really just be happy if I could put in a PS2 disc into my PS3 slim, and play it. I never got to have a PS2.

Wow this is going to be great. Finally we can get CFW on the ps3 and i can dump my 62 PS3 games onto a 2TB ntfs drive and never have to switch discs again. Hopefully we get compressed iso support and maybe some media server capabilities.

People, let me start like this. I used to play Amiga etc… all those machines died mainly because of piracy, not technology. Anybody who thinks different should read further and think. Sure that nowadays those machines are retro, but if you think about them you may find that the software production for those stopped suddenly and only some fans carried on writing software for them. I remember sitting in front of my Amiga and thinking how can there be no more games. I still own my A1200 with an internal hard-drive and 8 mb of fastram, and when i started it a few months ago I was amazed. I instantly ran Agony, Shadow of the Beast, Superfrog, Project X, Gold of Aztecs, Pinball Fantasies and people, none of those games sucked. Sure they’re not all 3d, but they’re actually fun as hell. That machine has an OS that doesn’t need to load from a hard-drive, no swap siles etc… and most of all you can simply turn it off or reset it without the danger of messing up anything.
If all you PS3 lovers wanna carry on playing these games like you do now, better hope it won’t be hacked cos Sony will pull the plug on it and you can all start collecting money for another new product pushing PS3 in the corner not cos it died of age, but because you killed it.

Recently, a hacker claimed he has hacked the PlayStation 3. George Hotz says he pulled it off after five weeks of work with “very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.” Sony is now investigating the PS3 hack allegations.
Sony has told IncGamers that they are checking the reports out about the PS3 hacks.
We are investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information,” said the statement.
George Hotz, the iPhone 2G hacker, claims to have recently gained access to the PS3’s system memory, which could lead to homebrew being introduced to Sony’s system and much worse, piracy.
I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.
3 years, 2 months, 11 days … that’s a pretty secure system.
Expect a PS3 firmware update soon if Sony confirms this, as they won’t want the same outcome which happened to the PSP.

Well it happened PS3 firmware update 3.15, who knows what this update is about (I’m sure we can guess). But I would suggest not updating, although you won’t be able to access PSN without it.

Hacking actually means getting into a system and having access to to it other than how it is meant to be used, and as far as I see geohot stated that he now has full read/write access.
Now the fun starts about programming and implementing your own software bits, for example modified firmwares (like for the iPhone), or the possibility to run backups either via .iso loader.
Unfortunately geohot also stated that he is unfamiliar with PPC and that he can’t code. So now we have to wait on another team to start with the homebrew fun.
I remember that it took a few weeks between the iPhone first being exploited and when the first jailbreak came out. So guys, stay patient.

I’m for some tweaks, like more support unlocked & maybe having access to the hypervisor under linux so that the PS3 becomes more than just a PS3 games console, but if by some means someone would find ways to run backup copies (let’s be serious here … stolen copies!) .. then i don’t give the PS3 any chance on winning this generation & sure later on will have higher prices hardware & software for the next gen if SONY does go for a PS4 & beyond.

Yeah, finally it happened… But let’s see it when we can run stuff like on our PSP’s then the fun is really on, when we got our own dev-kits… I dont see any problems with piracy, it’s all part of the game, remember that sony looses more money on second hand game trade, than they ever did on piracy, only a few % plays pirated games, and less then that are exclusively playing pirated games… But most of us buy second hand stuff… Well if this all goes well, I might finally get me a PS3, and that would make me one out of millions who would like to get a moded PS3, fully powered, that could run linux/homebrew/iso’s…
ahh yeah, made my day.. i woke up to this news, now all im looking forward to is all the Emulators that were previously unplayable due to the 3D being locked… N64, DC, PS1, PS2, hell i think the PS3 could run Xbox 1 games in it… We just have to wait

those saying SONY loses money to second-hand game sales, it is partly correct, for indirectly it does WIN.
let say you buy Uncharted 2 – new copy, SONY gets the cash, why would you sell it? more than 50% of those doing so, would be do buy another game for their system, so SONY gets another sale. when copying a game, noone gets a chance of making profit, not even the thief, why!? well then the developers would go bankrupt (smaller ones) & we’ll have to rely on some who may start releasing crappy games.
it’s a vicious circle, you steal, you dont’ deserve what’s good, the developers lose money & they charge higher prices, the ones using legit softs gets ripped off & stop buying, the developers at stake, release crappy games & now, legit owners or thieves lose the best games.
i keep saying this, just once in your life, i would like to see you react to something you lost because of someone else, all those wanting ISO launch, Backup play, deserves to find some valuable stuffs be stolen at their place, a hard earned one, why not a great piece of work you did for weeks or years. but then maybe most are a bunch of kids having not much to lose, yes the future will be dark.
why piracy will fail:
- torrents sites are vanishing (so great)
- Blu-ray are slow to copy.
- the hadopi law has been voted
- the authorities have decided to react
soon, maybe everyone with an Internet access, CD/DVD or BD Burner would suffer some form of copyright tax, maybe the media (CD/DVD/BD-R) will be more expensive
hack a system will only push it sales, but not the support.
So if one can come & say i’m a pirate & i will do so because i don’t care, will you do it in public, will you dare do it on TV, if not why do you still think you are right.

i’m not against reseach & hacks, i’m against the bad use some (ok most .. LOL) will do with it.
i don’t think because the PS3 hasn’t been hacked yet that the games didn’t sell, it’s just a matter of choice, people having no choice to steal, doesn’t look at games wanting to get them, they do manage to buy & enjoy the things.
if one has a lot of backup copies, will have no considerations for the games & have so much that will have no time to give it all & sure most would go the easy way of not paying for.
so, before being happy with a system being hacked or not, we must ask ourself, whether we are really sure we want this & what would it be if we were working like for naughty dog, been working hard for 2-3 years on that block buster games & later on have little to no revenue on it because it didn’t fail but was copied. some could say, well with the sale they get from those not modding their consoles, it’s enough, so maybe i’ll be right to say that in the future, console manufacturers need to put all their money & release a real fort with exta securities that cost so much, only the rich can buy & the games would become luxury.
if you can’t afford a good game, don’t buy, work hard, if you can, don’t steal, for someday you’ll be the one complaining.

So we’ve waited this long for it to even begin to show any signs of being hacked? How much longer until we can actually hack it properly? About another 4-5 years? By the time it’s been hacked completely the PS4 will probably be released.

Now to me this is a load of **** because not even sony themselves could gain access to the 7th cell once it had been locked no one can access it it is a master cell that operates the PS3 on it’s own so what happens now ??
Sony only have to do 2 things to make the exploit patched …they release a new firmwire version which scrambles the hardware id’s of the 6 cells which hackers have cracked then the firmwire will tell the 7th cell that a new master id is needed to generate a successful boot.
After the firmwire has been downloaded the ps3 operating system is then reinstated with the set of id codes that all 6 cells use to communicate with the 7th and hey presto back to square 1 for the hackers.
oh and there’s the protection to crack on blu-ray to get passed to even succeed on playing a pirated game on the ps3.
thats not a hack to exploit the system all he has done is hack the terminal kernal and the real memory so that basically gives the user more rights to add more apps and make some hardware changes that the ps3 would usually frown apon and thats it because you need to hack the protected memory to play games because it’s that [protected] memory that double scans the games so that they are in fact legit…he has basically gained access to the ps3 through an os which anyone can do with a simple exploit….. funny that more and more people are now going to be buying the new slimline ps3 because its got better benefits than what the old (fat) ps3 has such as it’s 40% quieter it used 65% less energy [electricity] [look for a standby switch on the back like the old ps3 has...you won't find 1] it has a completely new cell architecture….[[thats why the tit aint hacked the new slimline ps3..because he simply can't it has a completely new architecture than what the old ps3 has so it's a completely different kettle of fish if he wants to even get close to hacking it]] the new slimline has a completely new cell broadband engine and a completely new stronger/faster rsx reality synthesiser.
If you want to hack the ps3 you need to take control of the 7 cells and that aint possible
I spent my hard earned money on my PS3 and I don’t want fakes or pirated software. Go work for your original software, if not then too bad you don’t deserve to play if you don’t work!
