PS3/iPhone Hacks: Port Open Remote Play and Earn $$$

Posted by greg on October 26, 2009

Current ORP Bounty: $1,515.

Update: All right; ORP the Bounty Hunter here… Dashhacks will put $1,000 towards the bounty, and should you want ORP on the iPhone as much as the next guy (or girl to be politically correct), then feel free to donate using the PayPal button below. The first person to deliver a working ORP iPhone client takes home the whole she-bang — $1,000 + all donations.

Are you a developer? Do you have skills? What about an iPhone: you have one of those? If you answered yes to all 3 questions then boy, do we have something for [one of] you…

Open Remote Play Banner

Dashhacks is putting out a bounty… Be the first to port Open Remote Play (ORP) to the iPhone, creating a fully functional touch-enabled ORP experience, and get paid $1,000 CAD. That’s 10 cold hard Canadian brown skins.

The heavy lifting is already done… Check my main man, Dashhacker; he’s got the key to success over at the Open Remote Play project page — code and all.

Bounty rules and stipulations:

  1. Open Remote Play is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2; you must agree to that.
  2. We’re paying $1,000 CAD via PayPal; sorry no cheques, money orders, or wire transfers.
  3. Upon completion your final code will be committed to the ORP SVN repository.
  4. You must email your final entry to orp@dashhacks.com.
  5. After we test & confirm the first working client, we will announce the winner, which will effectively end the contest.
  6. Feel free to email orp@dashhacks.com with any questions or concerns.

All right… You good? Good. Be the first — it’s success and nothin’ less.

svn checkout http://open-rp.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ open-rp

this is just amazing,
I have been hoping for someone to develope an app for ORP!.
Just to bad we can’t play those six axis games on remote play the accelerometer would preform beautifully for that!
anyways dash hacker you should make up a donations page dedicated to the winner for even more cash for the hard work and maybe keep a bit to yourself cause you release an paid ORP out in the hacking community she’ll be cracked the next hour.
Anyways good luck guys anyone need some help with beta testing I have all three Iphones so just give me a email

yes!! finally i can open remote-play with my ipod touch!!
hopefully, it will be compatible wit ipod, probably….and since this will be released, quite fast, ( since its a contest )
i really want to stay on firmware 3.00 for a while because sony is gonna try something again to patch this. which i really dont see the point.. SONY, since ur reading this.. its ur fault there even is ORP because YOUR the ones who messed up with the original psp’s. if u would have never made it so easy to hack in the first place, there remote play modules would not have ever been decrypted and this post probably wouldnt be up right now. BUT since it was hacked by your own mistakes, let us at least have open remot play… u shouldnt target everyone with CFW on their psp’s, just the people who pirate your games. besides ORP isn’t harmful for the ps3, and even if it was, u would STILL be making money by repairing them.

o and since SONY will most likley do there best efforts to patch this, how do i bypass the update check again?

yo dave i had quit but i saw something very interesting hopeing High Guy would see it but i dont know.
any way he said if someone could find a JTag spot on the ps3 MB maybe something could bee done.

Well i was a ps3 news, guess what. deamonhades found the JTag under the Blueray if im not mistaking and the thing has been maped, not sure if its functional though.

Also there is a debug PS3 on the same sight that seems to still have the JTag headers and they seem to be active.

Now i don’t know what that means but sounds interesting

Comment by LastmanOut
2009-11-01 21:02:35

Highguy believes in getting at the jtag port on the ps3 will open it up in the way he mentions that it was possible in the dvb and satellite world. ps3news have a developer console, the Jtag is enabled for development and debugging purposes it’s probably shutoff on a regular ps3. If it’s enabled it’s only usage might be for flashing or trouble-shooting and fixing broken ps3’s when they are sent in for repairs.

I guess this bounty isn’t enough to ask someone to break an encrypted/signed boot-up, encrypted/signed executables the ever watching hypervisor, eFuses, and a Isolated SPU.

Thou, I do enjoy watching the show.

WOW!

Xbox gets Gta! Ps3 gets a compertition!

i think ps3 is just about out and dead! im a solid fan of this amazing machine, but lets just say it hasnt had the right backing!
it seems the ps3’s games are now aimed at 5 year olds with eye pet and little big planet and that they dont seem to care about there adult gameres games, (and out of them who can afford the ps3)
ps3 had the best chance from the start but chucked it away with stupid titels, pointless updates,
Where the Xbox now is alot cheaper to start with, + many great titles like forza GTA! and is now hacked to play backups!
where ps3 just has delays!
i love my ps3 but its time to change, it doesnt have the exclusivity on the titles the xbox has now!

dude…who give a crap about shitbox360 or shitbox? they still overcharge you for accessories…100 bucks for wifi? free on ps3. hdd to saves game? already included in ps3 AND you can upgrade it without voiding your warrenty. not to mention, controllers is still the same design AND the d-pad doesn’t sucks.

not to mention, crapbox360’s controllers aren’t ideals for fighting games…why? then, there the fact that while we may not get exclusives games, we’re getting better quality, no?

which do you want? more crappy games that doesn’t make sense or games that has quality over quantity?

also, let not forget this minors detail about ps3…it also a bluray movie player…can crapbox do that? no, it has to have an add-on…not to mention, it start-up themes sucks…and it can’t match up to Dynamic Themes. O_o

don’t get me wrong I am a complete ps3 fan. the ps3 gets the YLOD which is allot like the red ring of death for xbox360. I have had it and several of my friends have had it. if your out of warranty Sony charges $300. This and only this is the one thing I hate about the ps3. I am not sure if there has been a slim ps3 with this tho.

> the ps3 gets the YLOD which is allot like the red ring of death for xbox360.

Perhaps it’s “allot like the” RROD, but it’s nothing like the 33% chance of the 360 versus the < %3 chance of the PS3. No matter how you spin it, the Microsoft box remains a horribly engineered console - Microsoft-style.

All consumer electronics have a manufacturing failure-rate. The 360 however has comes with a failure guarantee.

> if your out of warranty Sony charges $300.

Inaccurate. PS3 repairs out-of-warranty cost $197.97 – including tax, Canadian (so even now, a little less in USD).

2009-11-03 02:25:56

I don’t mean to sound like an ass but 3% is way way far from correct. I run a ps3 repair shop in Hazard Kentucky, population very low and I have looked at over 200 ps3’s with the YLOD. not all systems show the yellow light of death so they are not counted as that. on the other hand a ton more than 3% is messed up due to overheating. which is pretty much what causes it. ph and your right, the current un warranty ps3 fix may be what you state but I turned mine in a month after release in my area. sorry about the miss pricing there guys.btw you wrote < 3% which is incorrect. If my math is right I think you meant less than.

Well sir I am 25 and I think my grammar is fine. especially since I was typing that on my ipod touch. I do not understand the last part of your statement. Before you start trying to ditch those with grammar remarks learn to spell and learn proper punctuation. Duston I guess I shouldn’t have said ps3 repair shop. I was wrong there it is a electronic repair shop. Just because we get a ps3 doesn’t mean we can fix it, also I don’t get 100% of the profits. I have five very great people that work for me. For your last question I am on the site because I choose to be.

i think you will find that apple wont endorse an application that required the use of a hacked psp to enable it to work.

so you’ll need to jailbreak your apple too..

Comment by Duston

Only reason Blackberry is not on the list YET because, as you know Apple has a very in depth SDK that can create just about anything with not many limits.

Comment by Dashhacker
2009-11-08 20:42:19

It’s true. The Apple iPhone SDK is sweet. Porting ORP to iPhone would be easier than BB and Android. Though Android’s NDK (native dev. kit) will help a lot.

STUPID

haha lol just playing. open remote play is just a cool feature to have. for example what if you really ned a friends phone number for somebody, but you dont have it? take out your iphone/ipod, use wifi/3g and see if hes signed in to psn! or you can just talk to friends on your friends list just for the sake of it. just the thought og being in the ps store on ipod touch or iphone is awsome! lol

by the way, i really really hope SSH wont be required. since u have to register ur psp wit ur ps3, then use the homebrew app to extract the information to ur comp, i dont see how that would work with an iphone/ipod

Oo ok. What new procautions do u think Sony Can take in blocking orp? I’m trying to think about little things they can do, but they can only take it so far since a psp is fully decrypted and of course a computer is a computer.

Comment by Dashhacker
2009-11-12 19:17:37

There are countless countermeasures Sony could employ to block third-party Remote Play implementations.

You’re right that they don’t want to alienate customers who have older PSPs so whatever they choose to do, they are fully aware that people can easily reverse-engineer it.

This is why they added a simple MAC address check to PS3 FW 2.80. It’s merely an annoyance, but enough of one that most users of ORP will not be able to circumvent.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Comment by Dave
2009-11-13 21:47:44

But technically, does that mean as long as they don’t block psp 1000 and 2000 users, then there’s nothing they can do to block orp?

Why does Sony fight back with dash hacks anyway? It’s stupid

And yo, is Sony not legally aloud to use the ps3 to check the psp for ISOs and for cfw and if it finds it, write encrypt the psp?
Sony does that with PC cdRoms. My cousin bought a used psp from game stop and I pandora’d his psp, gave him an iso game and when he used the program from Sony his psp was write protected. And when you see ur memory stick on the computer via USB ALL u see is the ISO

2009-11-14 16:04:26

its like a file management program 4 ur psp. its a cd u put into ur computer that will put your music/videos/photos on ur mem stick FOR u when u have your psp in USB. now, if he had OFW i dont think the program would have write protected the psp, but he had CFW WITH an ISO, and when we would open up removable disc ( his psp in USB ) all it would show is the ISO. (it was gta vice city stories but thts not important) & if we would try to delete it on the computer, it wouldnt let us & it would say its write protected.
& if we would try to delete the ISO/songs/photos on the psp it self, ( or even on the pc ) it wouldn’t work & it would say its write protected .

i had to pandora his psp all over again

Started looking into this. Got the interface done so figured i’d look into the ORP Code. Just wanted to point out that this code uses CURL, SDL and OpenSSL. Which means doing this on the Official SDK will require a complete recode from SDL to OpenGL ES/OpenAL, and CURL, OpenSSL to CoreFoundation.
