The reason why Sony’s firmware updates always starts out buggy is because there are so many different variations of hardware.
I fear that once the PS3 slim really takes off they are not going to do the extensive testing on the older Playstation 3’s leaving the early adopters screwed.
How do you work that out? All PS3’s use the same hardware! :/ Only things that have changed is the removal of the card reader/2 USB ports and the flash chips are now smaller. If you were talking about the PSP then yes, you are correct, but PS3 I’m afraid your miles out! Don’t really feel like I’m missing out on much not having the latest firmware.

HA! I knew it, i knew thy wouldn’t take their time and do it right, a lot of people complained about controllers failling, not just that but web brouser issues and a lot more games that just Drakes Fortune, like Batman, and some others that i can’t remeber right now but it was more than just D.F.
i realized that by doing FW sony has efectively placed a rope around its neck because although you can get a lot of good out them you can also break the bank testing them and makin sure they work properly and then they release a pice of crap FW and have to spend more money fixing it so, good luck with that sony.
In my opinion you should just allow CFW and let the pros like Dark-Alex and Fanjita amongst other hackers who actually pus things people want in a FW and let the have a crack at it.

um… p.s. my company does the same thing. release new firmware with like really bad bugs. Even after going through a validation department. it’s like the product was working at 98% and they try to fix the 2% bugs and somehow add a major one into the product. How do they not catch these things.

I think what they are doing is not admitting there is a problem because there is no way they could replace all the systems they screwed up. dave is right i have a ps3 and i would love CFW not for pirated games just for fun i have hacked almost every piece of eloctronics i own IE my gps i still use it as a gps but now i can also watch full movies on it. i wouldn’t bother trying to pirate a PS3 game because i think its more expensive to pirate than to just buy them used thats what i do i buy them used, example i bought Prince of Persia, Heavenly Sword, and Assasins Creed all for a grand total of about $60-$70 TOTAL! ive even heard that buyin used games does more damage than piracy so you be the judge, i realy dont have the time nor hte money nor the equipment to pirate PS3 games, i just realy like the emulator i installed to play SNES now and again

Like everything from the PC to the freakin iPhone gets hacked and pirated. Shit i even hacked my stupid m710 motorola phone back in the day. You think because custom firmware gets released PS3 will lose sales? Most of the people that use custom are doing it for emulators and homebrew. I have a psp hacked and most of what i have are nes games and homebrew not psp iso’s (side note: someone needs to build a cheap nes/snes hand held emulator with hard drive built in, now that would sell)
For the most part PS3’s are given to kids. Where parents would most likly not let there kid flash custom firmware onto there toy. And even how many 8-14 year olds would know how? (yah i know 13 and up may know) But not all of them would.
Seriously though, SONY messed up, and sounds like they still didn’t fix the problem. Custom firmware would not have solved this. Some idot would port the new 3.00 to there 3.00m33 and probably experience the same thing. Since most custom is just added features to the already released feature set.

Well one thing’s for sure, I can never update my firmware as I have two DS3 controllers which will fail if I do. They we’re purchased in a retail store, so go figure. My original controller as well as my legit DS3 SONY controller work fine …
i had a weird experience with Assassin’s Creed 1 though, at first i had the human characters walking @ 90 degress bent, as if they were bowing, yet was mostly like cut & paste perpendicularly, it also stalled 3 times on me then i had to reset the console & reconfigure it, since could play for 2-3 hours without problem. the only option i didn’t reactivate was the multi-audio output.
is it link to some specific SKU ?
i have a 20 Gb Fat.
I just downloaded the 3.01 FW, i shall try it & make an update.
as for CFW i don’t want it, thank you SONY for making it hard for people to crack the beast … it means you have consideration for developers …

I’ve upgraded to 3.01 last night. So far so good, but then again, the only problem I have ever had with the PS3 and any firmware (Excluding lack of wanted features) is remote play over internet. When it’s enabled, my router turns itself on all the time, without me attempting to connect to it via PSP. I have an O2 branded router, as seen in this image:

I’d assume it’s a rebranded job, but don’t know the manufacturer. If it makes any difference, I had the same problem with a BT Home Hub and an Edimax branded router. I have also had my PS3 swapped on one occasion due to a failed HDD within warranty, so it’s not isolated to the PS3 (which is a phat 80gb model) . Any ideas?
i have 80 gig old model for 599. got it when ps3 came out! i havent had a damn problem with it! very very satisfied with sony! until 3.01. i dl it last night jus messin round, and after reset i tried to go on browser and it is twice as slow! WTF! OVER! had some probs with warhawk but they seemed to resolve after several times of restarting sys. my controllers never failed. jus hafta b careful when linking blutooth. either link when in game or before u start game cuz if i link while a loading screen appears then i hafta restart the sys. it crashes now. anyways thx sony 4 a wonderful product. i have been DIE hard fan since ps1. have sony products, psp, ps3, 2 gig digi walkman, cybershot, all these products use the same mem stick and very convenient to transfer between them with ps3! thx again!

Well needless to say that nomatter how much your complaining on here is gonna help you! I would like to say hey For there is Trials and Errors and every thing can’t be perfect. the developers on the sony dev teams can’t always see the bugs thats why they have testers and US to help get those bug fixes. As for Custom firmware i do believe they should let cfw be installed on PS3 but with out the ability to play back up games. these machines can do so much more! it would be great to have third party developers design Apps for this machine and as for the new PS3 slim they did take away the install another OS.

Xbox 360 has been hacked for a long time now. Many pirate games and HMMMM they still make numerous games for the system. PSP has been hacked forever now, and HMMM again.. They still make numerous games for it as well. Go fucking figure.
Most PSP games suck anymore though. Out of all the PSP games that have come out in the last like 3 years, I play like 3, maybe 4.
When the PSP was first hacked, the games weren’t bad. Now they are mostly low quality, not much to them, and not very interesting. Their are more older PSP titles that I think a majority of people would play, versus the latest additions to the handheld. The quality seemed to drop dramatically.
Though, their are still a few games once in a while that come out that are decent, it’s not a plethora of games like it used to be. Atleast that’s this PSP owners perspective on it. I mostly use my PSP as an additional monitor for my PC than anything now because of this until I find a new game. Like Soul Calibur, I played that for a while.
Once LittleBigPlanet PSP hits though, I’ll be grabbing that off the shelf.

After the initial posts saying the small update wasn’t going to fix all reported problems, and greg mentioning in the post for any further input from anyone else, the total input amounts to zero. Nice endless amount of back and forth bickering and explaining on custom firmware this and that, and piracy and the new ceo of sony and everything else besides some feedback on whether the firmware worked for your problem or not. Wonderful job.
LOL, you are so right and i know im one of the bikering fools. but your right no one has posted much of anything about the FW update fixing anything so makes you wonder if there realy was any problems at all. as far as im concerned im on FW 2.6 and as of right now its ok untill they make an ABSOLUTELY irresistable FW wether it be CFW or OFW i dont care as long as its good new features and very, very few, if any bugs.
Well anyone could technically go down to the lower firmware as long as they don’t play or connect online as some of the firmwares are forced downloads. Download 2.60 when you install a new hard drive; since when you upgrade or change the hard drive in the system the system needs the update file so it can install the firmware over again. Odd how that system works, where it asks for the firmware over again even thou you would figure the firmware’s already on the system’s nand or systemboard and not contained on the hard drive.
Secondly, yes so much for the feedback on the firmware fixing or breaking anything else. My brother tired playing X-Men Origins Wolverine and it launched with a bunch of weird multi-color screens with no audio. Shutdown the system and rebooted it, loaded fine. Subsequent load ups of it didn’t show that odd loadup error, so it was a one time only so far. Gta, Mlb09, Dbz – no problems with those.

I guess you could try since the process for upgrading your hard drive on the ps3 system has a step that requires you to give the system the flash update file. I don’t know of any reason why you can’t give it a lower firmware revision.

Look at the guide on the official ps3 support site above and notice after placing a new hard drive in your system you’re asked to give the system the system firmware over again. In theory it seems possible provided the system doesn’t object to a lower firmware. Read up and ask around forums, if anyone’s tried to lower their firmware via this method.
I admire your thinking, but unfortunately this is a non-starter. The firmware version required is stored in the nand, so if you try to put in a different one it would just complain and request the actual version it has.
Plus, this would only work with the 40/80GB versions and newer, the launch 20/60GB have a larger nand flash which stored the firmware in it’s entirety and doesn’t require a ‘re-load’ of the firmware if the hard drive is changed.
Ahh well in that case, thanks. I guess that means If I upgrade my harddrive I won’t have to feed the system the firmware file. Thanks for the info.

You cannot run a ps2 emulator on linux . Sony blocks out the use of the gpu. If you have a launch console you can still use swap magic.

A launch console is a first generation system. In the U.S their were 2 versions a 60gb one with flash and memory stick reader and wi-fi and a 20gb one with no memory stick reader and no wi-fi.

At least it fixed the home menu problem during dead space.. every time I’d get a message from a friend it would freeze when I brought up the menu.
As for CFW for ps3, I wouldn’t want it, no offence to DAX, but I’d get bored of my ps3 very quick if I did run CFW.

i struggled just to buy my one 60gb ps3, and i play it on a 20inch sd tv (it hurts my eyes, especially in Ubuntu) i can’t afford an HDTV, even though now im looking into one at wallmart they are now under $300 US for a 26inch wich i may be able to get, after i fix my car, pay my doctor’s bill (no health insurance) and other expences i have.

You’re all forgetting one teeny weeny detail. Other OS is an ‘isolated’ environment so there is no way you can ‘exploit’ the xmb from there. The hypervisor will just go ‘jog on!’
My DualShock3 controller is fuckedup after installing 3.0 :S… its shows 2 leds burning and buttons arent reconized anymore. prolly was a fake controller :(

example get a bunch of PS3 runing all kinds of flavors of linux somehow conecting to one ps3 and just bombard the PS3 with code until the system symply decrips all its information on protection and hypervisors basicaly spilling its guts. kind of like a PS3 torture session the PS3 says “ok, enough, this is how it works” then we can use all this info to hack it. but as i stated many times before im not a hacker or programer so this may not work at all.

i actually got this idea from both folding at home and an article i saw a while back about some company using a whole crap load of PS3 to break internet security using the processors of all the PS3 in unisin, dont ask me how because i have no friggin idea but they did it.
PS. forgot to mention that the company was runing a test it wasen’t something illegal they were doing. i repeat it was a legit test, to test the power of both the PS3 and the security systems they were up against.

Well, where do i start?
The one thing that pisses my off the most, and its something i just cant get over (like the three note jingle before the game, the horrible font sizes and the multitude of store links and adverts) is that the titles of the files i have on videos and music just fade away if i happen to want to read one of them as the whizz past.
Honestly.. 2 seconds? I couldnt find a setting anywhere to turn that stupid bloody idea off or even extend the time before fade-out. How rediculous is it? I use a media server with my PS3 and i have bucketloads of 1080p films, avi dvd rips, mp3’s, tv episodes etc etc – and like hell can i find anything!
I dont even know who to go to to complain where someone somewhere with some tiny amount of influence can have a word about this god-awful decision and get it effing sorted. It used to be a breeze to get to what i wanted amogst long lists of stuff, now i have to whizz-stop, whizz-stop my way and its amazingly annoying.
I’m honestly surprised by how few people have mentioned this – and i have read comments on the 3.0 and 3.1 firmware on sveral sites. Noone else find this annoying?

but yea. im almost positive i found one. im not going to give details, since sony representatives may be reading this, BUT i will tell u this… when the playstation freezes, the red HDD light and the green WIFI light will either keep blinking, or stay lit up. i have to turn it off manually. it wont work with the controller. holding the PS button down on the controller wont work. and when u DO turn it off manually, it takes like at least 7seconds until it actually goes off, then when u hear two beeps it turns off. and if u have remote start enabled, u will notice that the ps3 is no longer giving out wifi since the green light isnt blinking. and u also have to turn it on manually sometimes because the controller wont turn it on. and this is all happening at a time when the PS3 is searching for your psp/flash drive.

well, by my knowlege, you need two exploits. one exploit make a hello-world, and one to allow access into the NAND, and one for the flash. i could be wrong. but in any case, keep working on save game exploits, because we MIGHT, JUST MAYBEE, be able to put mine and yours together.(no homo) :)
like i said, since the ps3 searches for a flash drive, its possible to really get some work done.
so if u find a good save game exploit that atleast freezes the ps3, keep it
