Open Remote Play v1.0 BETA (for Mac OS X) Released

Posted by greg on May 8, 2009

Drum roll please… You’re about to experience Remote Play like never before — on your [Intel-based] Mac, that is.

First and foremost, you will need access to a hacked PSP to export the remote play settings. All that’s included in the download package.

Open Remote Play v1.0 Beta Screenshot
Open Remote Play v1.0 Beta Screenshot

Open Remote Play Howto:

  1. If you have not done so already, register your PSP with your PS3 for Remote Play.
  2. Copy the ORP_Export folder (it’s included) to your PSP under /PSP/GAME
  3. Run Open Remote Play Export on your PSP. This will create a file on the memory stick called export.orp. Copy this file to your PC.
  4. Run the ORP GUI and click on Import, locate and import export.orp. You will have to manually change the IP address of your PS3, by default it will be set to 0.0.0.0. I keep two profiles, one for local LAN and another for when I’m connecting from the Internet. You can create multiple profiles by simply changing the Name field and clicking Save.
  5. Click Import again, this time locate and import “keys.orp.” You only have to do this once for a new installation, or if there is a key update.
  6. Select a profile, cross your fingers, and click Launch!

Dashhacker strongly encourages you read the included README.txt before proceeding; remember, this is beta.

The API and Windows player will be available within a week. Enjoy — now lets get drunk, beers on Dashhacks tonight!

what about pc version?

The real question is can SONY patch this because if they can it going to be a bit of a dissapointment, although having been reversed engineered, it would be possible to extract data, from the HDD and Flash drives, but that would require a lot of work and code:P
SONY would have to;

Patch Ps3 and PSP
and possible re-develope remote play or add advanced Encryption to there console

also Sony update there console often, so you would have to update to play on the PSN

a team needs to but to gether here, before this really can develop into something.

Also is it for all firmwares or just the latest…

just some thoughts and opinions

and who the hell brought brownies in to it:(

but nice job !! good job i got one but i hate them!!

Some people develop on the system they use most. (In my case it’d be Linux). Coders often just develop for themselves, and give it to others. They’re not necessarily out to make the app as popular as it can be. That’s why.

What are you on about? If he was doing it for himself do you think he would be posting it to a hack website?

I have to agree, windows release first would have made more sense.

It’s kinda like somebody at your job is in the mood to eat a brownie but just wants one… Brownies are their favorite treat. They make a whole tray of brownies and just eat one and put the rest in the break room for everyone else. Then you walk into the room and start complaining that Cookies would have made more sense because more people like cookies… That would be considered rude in that environment, but is it here?

Now I’m hungry…

Well, OSX is a great OS for coding, along with Linux (both UNIX based). Plus, it’s very likely that he knows more about OSX than he does about windows. If I was coding this software, I would first release it for Linux because that is my best platform.

Anyway, nice job, Dashhacker.

The ps3 runs on open GL processors just like the older macs. so it makes perfect sense for this to come for macs first.

What are you talking about? Current Macs still use OpenGL, and so does Linux and windows. OpenGL runs on almost all platforms.
Directx is microsoft’s version… Similar concept, but the code is different.

OpenGL is for graphics and is intended as a way to use a universal driver on many cards.

Macs now run on POWERPC and INTEL processors, PowerPC’s being the outdated, old processors that run IN THE ORIGINAL XBOX AND THE PS3.

i hate you all.

Because the mac is something a lot of people use. After all it was the 1st personal computer ever invented, just after the apple. Way before the peanut was even an idea.

Windows is the weakest link, Microsoft garbage. Macs are far easier to develop on, it’s Unix.

Exactly. Unix is muuuuuuch faster then Crap ass Windows. Just look at the Boot time for Windows and then Boot time for MAC OSX soooooo much faster and reliable.

Comment by Suapsycho

Might be faster outta the box. However, consequences dictate that the more shit you put on there, the slower it’ll get.

what an ignorant thing to say. the ps3 chose to run open GL processing just like the older power pc macintoshs. so does mac suck so bad that a huge company such as SONY would choose the lesser operating system language of the two? nah, probably not. I dont use windows machines but im no where about to say that windows “suck ass.” and also who would want a mac version? why, all the users who use macs of course. please dont associate all mac users as “that hip guy” that just likes to organize his photos and music. there’s a large percentage of us that contribute a lot to the mac, pc, and linux communities.
This has been your lesson for the day.

Comment by Nicko01
2009-05-13 19:49:58

OpenGL is not an operating system language, it’s a graphics processing library.
Operating systems are coded in C, Assembly, et cetera.

Also, macs are great because they are UNIX based.

Besides coming across as an idiot and making people hate mac users even MORE after your post, you have made Nicko1 look like a genius… (not to say he isnt)

You seem to be just the type of person that makes me ashamed to call myself a mac user.

pretty useless for now. Not even really a hack.

What’s so exciting about wasting electricity just to access your PS3 from a far? What are you possibly going to do with it? Just check to see who is online and play with the basic functions?

Pretty useless IMHO. I mean I appreciate his hard work but this is pointless.

It won’t have any further uses other than browsing your PS3 on other devices. You probably won’t be able to play games, extract anything from the HDD, etc. Perhaps in a later version…

You could:

Wake up and use your Macbook to turn on your PS3 to get some tunes playing while you get dressed.

Turn on your PS3 from a hotspot and freak out whoever is in your house.

not sure about these but..

Turn on your PS3 with the eyetoy and check out who is in your house.

Add/stream/listen to your movies/music from your laptop.

Overall I’d say anything pushing the “scene” is a step in the right direction. And wouldn’t you know it.. as soon as I sell my PSP something cool like this comes out. Good work guys keep it up.

Thanks DMON, I mean…. just to enable the PS3 Eye for 60/120 fps video surveillance without having to bring your PSP is wonderful. Maybe you won’t be able to get full frames for the beta, but still. It is useless for people that have a PSP and a PS3 and don’t look to get anything else out of this combination besides playing games. I think being able to put all necessary files on a thumb drive and take this along with me to install on any Mac (and soon to be PC) is outstanding. Keep up the great work. Why these idiots are on PS3/PSP hacks site and don’t take advantage of the extra functionality these hacks provide, i don’t know. Oh and also… all the complaints for the PS3 Eye not having windows drivers… well, you won’t need them if you were wanting the drivers for surveillance purposes. It’s the only reason why I wanted them. Use wireless usb if your PS3 Eye is going to be a considerable distance away from your ps3. Open your minds!!!

This as you say may be ‘useless’ to those unimaginative among us, but it has major ‘proof of concept’ written all over it.

How easy do you think now it would be to spam the PS3? Would the PS3 flake out if ALOT of commands are sent in a short space of time?

Some people just can’t be satisfied. Bitch when there’s nothing, bitch when something arrives. Consider yourselves IggyBin’d!
