Well, it’s finally out and unfortunately it’s not what we all expected and were hoping for… The only thing significant this update brings is Text Chat. Text Chat allows you to communicate with your PSN buddies allowing up to 15 friends; you’ll be able to chat using the wireless keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard. You will be able to access this while playing a game too – so yay. Also, you will be able to participate in up to 3 chat rooms at once.

It’s a step in the right direction, but it definitely isn’t enough.. They really need to pull their finger out. Better voice chat support across all games is definitely needed, something like the 360’s party system would be good. The ability to press the PS button and bring up a message directly when it’s received etc… The list is huge.

@tmr……. as a last resort, if u got a mate with a ps3 you can take out your hardrive and put it into theirs… (it takes all of 2mins to remove it) itll say you have to format it…once its finished you can put it back in yours and it will tell you to format it again. youll lose all your saves and anything on the drive but at least youll be able to use your ps3 again. your profile should be ok because thats stored seperately.
remember that you can sign up for “continous play” (google it) for £4.99 a month and sony will fix or replace your ps3 outside of warranty :) so if it ever dies, sign up for it then leave it a week or two then make a claim! gotta be worth a fiver.

Orr……you could turn the PS3 off, then when you turn it on keep your finger on the power button until you hear 2 beeps – RECOVERY MENU try re-installing the firmware from there.
i tryed doing the recovery menu thing and it didnt work.. the ps3 started up after the 2nd bleep and showed the background pic and nothing else.
i think it may need a new HDD
its not the hdd i installed a hdd that had never seen a ps3 it was a sata hdd from a laptop and it had not o.s (operation system) on it so the ps3 formated it and then installed it on the hdd even if you had a corupt hdd the console would say somthing like your system doesnt have a hdd or it would just tell you that the hdd was corupt… so it seems like a system problem by the way if you get a new ps3 you should install ydl (yellow dog linux) so when stuff like this happens you can still have a ydl o.s and maybe with a little bit of programing you might be able to get xml back (xml is sony’s base operation system)

hey i have noticed that evry one has over looked the fact thatthe ps3 also got the ability to use the copy and paste eature it wasnt in the post in the ps blog but if you read the update info it was in there. just so you know while in the browser hold down x and hilight some thing the you get the option to either copy it or search it. the while entering txt there will be a paste option at the bottom right!!! just letting u guys know

My guess is that this has to be a security update. Otherwise why would they bother releasing an update this pointless now instead of waiting until they had more features lined up? Think about it. Sony fucked up MAJORLY with the PSP as far as security goes, so you’d assume that they wouldn’t want the same shit happening with the PS3. So they’re probably monitoring everything that comes out for the PS3 to make sure no extra holes get opened up and if one does then a quick update of the firmware happens and no more exploit. Hide that security update wrapped in a functionality update and you have more people willing to accept it instead of declining and figuring out what exactly the update does code-wise.
The PS3 is a power house. The odds of hacking the thing are next to impossible. It has 6 cell processors for games alone. The Seventh is dedicated to checking all the functions and codes of the PS3 system. No games can access that seventh processor, nor, as of yet, has any exploit. It was really an ingenious security design, main reason PS3’s have such a great performance track record. Also make hacking a royal pain in the ass.
I state this mainly because I doubt there is anything that can penetrate the PS3 (yet), so releasing a security update would be useless, as Sony wouldn’t know of any exploits to close up.
This was probably released to get the insane update rumor (read: wish list) quelled. Also it was released the same day as a supposed ‘gift’ from Sony. The gift was this update and the PS2 price drop to $100 US. Also I think this was released April First if memory serves… Fuckin’ hilarious.
Also the PSP just isn’t that powerful securitywise, so it is easy to hack. I own 3 myself. :3 Also I’m aware this info on PS3 hacking is a bummer. But keep the faith, one hole could open the entire system up.

I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but I’ve been getting some strange sound issues with HDMI since the last update. I was playing the FEAR2 demo and after about hour & a half the sound went funny, like it was underwater; no gun fire or speech could be heard only the background music; almost like when a grenade goes off but without the ringing. After dying and restarting from the same place the sound came back. This also happened in Haze during cut scenes, could hear the background music and aircraft noises but not the speech. It works fine with Component.
As of firmware rev 2.60 and 2.70 my 60GB PS3 cannot play Blu Ray movie discs. I can play my PS3 games though. When I put in the BD after a few seconds the screen goes black and the console does not repond to any commands, I have to manually turn off the device using the AC switch on the back.
I have been reading in a lot of forums that massive number of people have the same problem with these firmware revs. I am totally disapointed with Sony, they need to put their act together and release a new patch immediately.
