Sony Calls PS3 Price Drop Rumors False

Posted by LeifErikson on March 31, 2009

Well, it looks like Sony has no plans on dropping the price. Shame, because with a price drop perhaps there will be huge sales on the console.

“As we have stated previously, we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation,” the statement from SCEA public relations manager Al De Leon reads. “SCEA remains focused on the long-term momentum of PS3. With the industry’s best software lineup this year, combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date, we remain confident in our approach and the value we’re delivering with PS3.”

Rather interesting that it’s not the usual “We don’t comment on rumors and speculation” Blatantly stating there won’t be one, the company may be trying to manage expectations.

I think they should drop the price, it would drive their stock so high. Not to mention the fact that there would be more players online.

It ain’t really that expensive for a one time buy anyway, anyone finished uncharted on Crushing? just unlocked it by finishing in hard

I still don’t understand why the PS3’s price is such a huge deal. If you wanted to get a 360 with wireless and a comparable(ish) hard drive you would end up spending about the same. Throw in 12+1 months of LIVE and you should be sitting at about the same cost. Instead Sony decided to produce a machine with a very significantly lower failure rate and not nickel-and-dime their consumers. Not to mention you also get blue-ray capability and you don’t have to cringe in fear every time you turn on your system worrying about it being the last time you do.

LoL @ …”combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date”

I still see way more XBOX and Wii ads on TV. But I guess thats cuz PS3 has barely any games coming out that are exclusives….I think they sucked Killzone 2 for all it was worth.

Ugh, it’s like they are going for the highest draft pick next year or something ??

To start, the PS3 has always been worth its price (any similar XBOX would be more expensive).

If they confirm a price drop, then people would hold off buying the console and wait for the price to go down, of course they’re going to deny it!

Current PlayStation 3 Drops To $299, New Model Announced

Well, that was tricky, Sony. You make us all think the “big announcement” is little more than a PS2 price drop, and then, you wait 24 hours to give us the bombshell. Whatever; we can roll with that!

As of Monday, April 6, the current PlayStation 3 model will drop in price to $299. This is the price cut some analysts have predicted and gamers have requested since the start of 2009, and although Sony has indeed remained insistent that they had “no such plans,” the economy may have gotten to them. Either that, or they’re just taking the opportunity to give everyone what they want and simultaneously provide us with a new model…an upgrade, as it turns out. This new PS3 model will feature a 160GB hard drive, and – wait for it – the return of backwards compatibility! Well, partially, anyway. They won’t be re-implementing that graphics synthesizer chip from the original 60GB PS3 that allowed for almost full b/c for PS2 software. However, they have decided to bring back software emulation, which means that most all of PS1 titles will work on the machine, and “about 80%” of all PS2 software will work, too.

Furthermore, and for a limited time only, this new PS3 model will include a copy of Resistance 2, tossed in for no extra charge. This means the new SKU will come with the 160GB hard drive, Insomniac’s brilliant shooter, and backwards compatibility, all for the price we’re all currently used to: $399. The PS3 that’s sitting on store shelves right now? That will get the $100 price drop, and of course, you won’t be getting any extra goodies with it. We have heard that some retailers may do something special for this new PS3 model, too; something about Blu-Ray movie promotions has been mentioned, but there’s nothing concrete just yet. We’ll let you know.

So anyway, say “thank you,” everyone. It’s basically what you wanted.

Well it seems like the PS3 is finally killed it self I feel bad about people who have to pay $100 less then what I paid for my Original PS3 and not get all the features the worse thing I had some dumb ass say well I have a “160G PS3″ I came back with “I have a 60g that I just upgraded to 500G” so I thing the only way PS3 will fix there price is if people stop buying it all together. + Xbox 360 Sucks “not the games but the hardware they give you”

Ps3 does not need a price cut… Its worth the money! I have both the Xbox360 and the PS3, any my F***ing xbox360 gave me the RRD twice! I think I’m ready to toss the 360 out. 360live is a joke… Thank goodness for free online play on the ps3. who ever wants the ps3 price cut is just a cheap person.

You are right about people been cheap asses. But look at the world right know. You have to understand that the economy has effected everyone. Gas, light, food, housing everything went up. Right know people can’t buy a console not even a Wii. People need food and pay there rent first. Whats more important food or technology? The world is going through bad times. We might get another great depression and if that happens holy shit! Video games will be last, for me to worry about. I just hope the economy gets back on its feet. Just imagine how many company’s world wide will go bankrupt. Sony has a very good reason not to bring the price down. THE ECONOMY is in a very shit hole. Even Microsoft layoff PC workers, that’s the first time in a long time that they needed to do that. Know there is this ONLive coming to MAC, PC and HDTV’s this ONLive isn’t going anywhere. People are going to be buying food first and pay there other bills. What SONY needs is to have PS1 and PS2 Emulated on the PS3 100%. That way it will give people a reason to buy a PS3. PS3 games + Retro PS1 & 2 games + Blueray movies + music = a very good price on saving a lot of tech from buying. Hell you can even install Linux. In my opinion just get a MAC or a PC if you want a computer. Don’t get me wrong I tried it, its just that Sony put a lock up chip for people not to use all of the CPU of the PS3. You and I know why people will find a way to but windows on a PS3 and Boom. Pandora Emu’s all the way. I can’t wait for a custom Firmware of the PS3. Than they’ll make a PS1 & PS2 Emu. It’s called reverse engineering my friend. ^_^
PS3 Firmware is cousin of the PSP firmware.

sonyman: Thats some awsome news you wrote there, truly appreciated, where have you found this information?

- I know that the PS3 is worth the money thats true indeed, but it is the time for PS3 to make a move like x360 has done several times and now is the time.

Even if the price dropped in half, people wont buy these machines. No one wants to be stuck with a machine that you have to buy every game, especially when the games are the same price as those on consoles that have a hacking scene. People can’t afford to pay $40-80US for a game when they are running a family, or have other average expenses. The current sales of PS3 have been made buy hifi type people and the guy with no girl friend who thought the PS3 would be a cool solution. Well it’s a flop sorry to say.

The only solution would be for Sony to force down game prices to say $20USD, or to secretly release a flaw that allows hackers to open up the scene.

Bye. Sony==burnt

I say “especially when the games are the same price as those on consoles that have a hacking scene.” as it proves that Sony puts no relationship to quantity sold in games compared to price. Their whole sales model needs cheap games as the average family would never be able to afford to buy games all the time, so the result would eb a family with a 4expensive restrictive console with a few games. Now that’s would be considered a dud purchase by many.

How many of the PS3 owners only have a few games. I’d say 80% of them.

People will remember that Sony==burnt, and they wont be buying their next console, if they every bring one out.
