PS3 Price Drop On The Way?

Posted by LeifErikson on February 25, 2009

An analyst with Janco, Mike Hickey, claims that a major price cut on the playstation 3 may be on the way (like, in the next few days). Hickey claims that the price slash needs to be at least $100 to get the retail juice moving again, and that, failing that, Sony should expect to see its sales on the console continue to decline. Hickey also speculates that Sony could hack the Blu-ray out of the PS3 in order to make that price cut doable but then the PS3 won’t be unique and it won’t be thee console to buy for an all-in-one HD experience — It would be another xbox 360. You’d have to buy an HD addon to make it somewhat better. — Sony isn’t that stupid, are they? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Stay tuned!

Uh, you’re kidding me, right?

This Hickey guy must be a complete nut job if he thinks Sony would, even for a moment, consider removing Blu-Ray support from the PS3. All of the PS3’s existing titles are on Blu-Ray discs, so ripping out that functionality would render all PS3 titles up until this point entirely useless, which is the stupidest move Sony could even think to make.

In fact, to take anything more out of the console than what’s already been removed seems completely impossible to me.

Not to say I don’t expect to see a price drop, I’ve heard rumors abound for the past six months or so that Sony plans on taking a more competitive pricing angle come March, I just don’t see the console Having anything else taken out of it.

One likely scenario, however: Has anybody considered the possibility that perhaps Sony might soon release a slim and lite version of the PS3 sometime soon? It’s happened with all of their previous consoles, including the PSP, and considering how massive the PS3 is, making it smaller would come as no surprise, logically. In fact, a smaller PS3 may even cost them less to produce, which could open things up for a decent drop in price, no?

In any case, we’ll see what happens when the time comes for Sony to announce anything regarding the PS3. I, for one, can’t wait. :D

xjen0vax,
I’m guessing you were trying to presume that I possibly have a one sided view of consoles, which i’m sorry to say is fairly wrong =/ (even though my last comment may had seemed to look like a one sided bitch about Xbox)

I’m speaking from personal experience here since I myself had an Xbox about a year back (lasted for about 6 months before RRODing on my ass) and I found the Xbox community to be quite obnoxious, rude and most of them had some kind of speech problem.

I’m all open to all consoles since each have their ups and downs, but I have personally found more faults with Microsofts console than I have any other which are currently on the market. =]

I have never heard such bs in all my life. Why dont the sad old 360 owners just worry about their own waste of money console going red ring rather than starting totally unbelievable rumours about taking blu ray drive out of ps3.
What i say to you numskulls is go buy a ps3, experience the best in home entertainment without it going red ring, freezing or having to pay for online use and then sell your piece of shit xbox or use it for firewood.

Just use your head. You pay for what you get and that is why Xbox360 is only a measly 125 quid and not 250 quid+

eh. hicky need to go back to the redland. like xjenOvax said, and if they even did that, it would render most of the titles for ps3 usless and worthless.

remember, ps3 has the least number of add-on. the only reason why people avoid buying one is because they bitch and moan about the price.

if you were to compare it to x360 in investment, ps3 will get you more back than x360 will. think about it. would you waste nearly $1000 in accessories just to get the best HDD or wifi alone when you can save more just buying the ps3?

and remember, in this ages and time, it now more of a online issue than the offline issue, so would you consider what we’re lacking and what we’re in a need of?

if sony wanted to do a price cut, they should apply that to the games and not the console. the console, in my opinion, makes the buck worthless since they’ve already gutted most of the things that makes ps3 different.

Wii for party types, crappy for overbeatted halo and something i’m missing while PS3 for graphic, power, and HD quality movies. what more are you looking for?

they can alway raise the price on the blu-ray movies, no?

For Ps3 to take out the one thing that has been pushing the Blueray market and that won them the HD wars….RIGHTTTTTT. The 1 thing that makes ps3 unique, and enables high quality sound, uncompressed textures and pretty much a 6 x’s bigger disc that has potential to hold 6 x’s bigger games?

I don’t think Sony is that stupid, I mean what will happen to all the games that came out before hand?

You’re clearly missing vital facts here. Consider the following:

When the newer PS3 SKUs were released without support for PS2 titles, did the Firmware updates lock out PS2 support on older consoles? No. So even considering how far fetched the idea of them removing BD support is, if they did decide to do it, it would be even more unlikely that they would lock out that support on older consoles.

xjen0vax as for sony making a new ps3 they already have for every system they release an new one a few months down the road and that is the 160gb it is a little bit better and has a larger hdd so i dont think there going to make another version of the ps3 because i think they already have and that one is the 160gb so as for that rumor i think that could be clarifide as false

Comment by xjen0vax

You obviously weren’t paying attention. The separate SKUs aren’t revised versions of the PS3, they’re just separate models that change based on the current market, be it price or demand. Slim versions of Sony’s consoles are smaller, better designed, what=have-you.

Actually, the ps3 could survive without BD. How? Network. Yes, if sony thought they could provide a complete net solution to media of all types including movies and games they could produce ps3s without BD.

Would they? No. BD is proprietary technology owned by who? Oh yeah, sony. Not only is it a selling point, it increases profit margins because they own the patents. By removing the BD, yes hardware costs go down…yes royalty rights go up.

However, they can remove other things to make the system cheaper and more appealing. Like what? Id start with the WLAN and the BT. WLAN is slow and BT is again licensed. By using ethernet and proprietary RF, consoles AND accessories would gain in profit margins and sales.

The other option is to unlock the features that the console has and sell it not as a game system but a home media center. Things like BT cell phone interop and music playback regardless of medium or running applications. Also, increase psp and online store purchases by making all ps3 games remote play…the console is half server, so sell it for what it is…

Theoretically, if the PlayStation Network had some time to start bulking up on titles previously only available on disk, it would be possible to release a PS3 without Blu-Ray support (in fact, I could easily see this being the ideal choice for game distribution a few years down the road when the PS4 starts development). However it’s still not the most viable solution, unfortunately.

I agree that they wouldn’t remove it because it’s a proprietary format. Much the same, they could easily remove the UMD drive from the PSP because it would save money, but haven’t yet (albeit the PlayStation store is chock-full of games now, and UMD is a relatively dead format; it no longer even lives up to its name “Universal Media Disc”).

I could see the WLAN being removed, but that wouldn’t really help much with the cost issue, as it doesn’t cost much to produce a system with WLAN support built-in, and removing Bluetooth would not only make all current controllers for the console obsolete on newer SKUs, it would also render the PS3 Bluetooth headset they released recently completely useless as well. Removing Bluetooth support would be almost as big a mistake as removing BD support, as there is a lot of proprietary hardware already available that relies on it. It’s just not viable.

Finally, you also have to consider that technology becomes cheaper to produce as time progresses, and it while it still costs the consumer about $400 to buy a PS3, it only costs Sony half of that, at most (and I’d say it’s probably closer to about a quarter anyways), to produce one. Even not removing features of the console, many viable options still remain for making the system cost less. All in all, I highly doubt we’ll see any noticeable change in the hardware of any newer, cheaper SKUs that Sony releases.

Comment by chuckthetekkie
2009-02-28 06:57:15

I could have sworn that Sony is losing money on the PS3 hardware because it costs more to produce the console than they were selling it for. That could have changed, but I don’t think so.

As technology advances, costs come down, things cheaper to make. It is possible for Sony to come up with a slimmer version of the PS3 sometime in the future.

One thing I would like to see is a UMD add-on for the PS3 that allows you to play PSP games on the PS3 as I find it hard to play on the PSP due to my large hands.

I still wish they would bring back PS2 support as I actually started buying PS2 games again just to play them on the PS3 since I no longer had to cost of a PS2 memory card.

Also the hardware in the PS3’s have changed over time. A PS3 that is produced today uses less energy than one produced 2 years ago since the advanced in CPU and GPU manufacturing processes allow for smaller chips.

There is NO WAY that Sony would remove the Blu-Ray drive as EVERY Disc-based PS3 game in on Blu-Ray weather it needs it or not.

They already removed PS2 support, removed 2 USB ports. There is not much else to remove yet.

As of January 2008 the average production cost for the PS3 was $400. Over the past year the production cost has also dropped significantly. Correcting my above statement, after doing a little research, I’ve found out that PS3 production costs are roughly $250-$300 per unit, which could easily accommodate a reasonable price drop.

2Wize hit the nail in the coffin. I read some dumb shiiii on here but he or she is right. BD is where it’s at. They take the chance to lose way more if they cut it. They still have other not sure if better but other choices of hardware to cut back on to reduce the cost of production. Now I don’ t think the HDMI would go but it could. Fiber Optic port could go. as-well as the other stuff 2Wize mentioned.

2009-03-04 07:23:45

BD is it? But still you say that HDMI ‘could’ go? Thats just as stupid as saying that BD has to go. What good is BD without HDMI? And also removing Fiber Optic? That means you are left with a BD player capable of doing 1080i without the possible DTS-HD/True-HD?

You might wanna think that all over…

Repackaging the PS3 as a net-station wouldnt work very well, no. It would be a good idea to start working on it now though on sonys part, which Im sure they are. If it did happen the BD and the UMD could both be ditched. Do keep in mind that BD is indeed not dead.

In the end, yes we wont notice major changes. BT would be an extreme and the wlan would be minor. Do keep in mind a bt 1.1 adapter is dirt cheap as well as all of those accessories come with coords too. Im not sure what bus the WLAN is on but Im not expecting USB. Sony likes expensive microprocessors – note the removal of the emotion engine already. By simplifying the hardware 1 piece at a time is probably how they could save more money.

Last I heard though production costs were still about equal with sale costs. Any links to updated production cost of the hardware?

Remove Blu-ray to lower cost by $100? That is fake rumors because if you remove blu-ray you are essentially removing a core piece of the PS3 hardware. Fake information, if price drops are going to occur it would not be because of the removal of blu-ray.

F-A-K-E this is their opinion on dropping cost for PS3 sales to increase. There are rumors somewhere in 2009 there will be another price drop but expect to see blu-ray still available on the system. Prepare to feel like jackasses Janco and Mike Hickey after a price drop with blu-ray available.

lol – They need to create a retard-spam filter to keep retards from posting, seriously. I’ve seen more respectable comments come from a spam-bot trying to sell me Viagra then these jack asses! =/

They would NEVER remove Blu-ray support – period.

The console is marketed as a blu-ray player pretty much – stop being such morons!

They can’t strip ANYTHING out of the console, if they continue to strip things out they will literally just be digging them selves a grave. People expect things to progress forwards not backwards and removing shit is just a step backwards.

Their only solution to make the PS3 more cost effective is to try and get their suppliers to cut the costs on the parts, cut out some middle-men and continue to optimize the whole manufacturing process so it doesn’t cost as much to produce – doing so will allow for price drops.

For them to start designing a slimmer model – that would take millions of dollars for design/fabrication/testing/etc.

Really the economy is in no position for them to even DARE spend the time or money designing a slimmer console. Unemployment rates are through the roof all over the world, just in January alone 700,000 jobs were lost in Canada/US. Tell me who the hell would go out and buy a gaming console when they don’t have a job?

Like I said, they only can optimize from here on out to stimulate some revenue and allow for a price drop. Anything else would just be a huge loss.

Oh, and in response to those PS3 hate comments – Get a life, really. I hate Xbox but I don’t waste my time going on Xbox forms posting “XBOX BLOWS BILL GATES BALLS!” every time a news article is posted. Maybe you got so much time cuz your one of the hundreds of thousands that got laid off. Sucks to be you – bitch. =)

Once again you’re completely oblivious.

Sony locked out PSP homebrew because it wasn’t an intended function of the console, not because they didn’t have enough money, considering that locking out homebrew would have absolutely no effect on the amount of money they make or lose in the first place.

Hell, i just bought my “Wii” 3-days ago becouse a softmod is now available! But that doesnt mean the Game’s are not going to be affected by homebrew availability. Every downloaded game is a loss right? Could never be a “Win” if you tell me.

I’m With Sony Full Throttle.
i never had any problems with my Playstation3 other than lack of Hard Drive Space (easily Solved)

Bluray Removal Wont Happen, I Guarantee it.
To Cut Costs of The Playstation3 Sony will Develop a Slimline PS3 Before removing the Bluray Drive.

I Agree with xjen0vax Full Heatedly with the titles being on bluray.

Xboxer don’t waste your time coming to a PlayStation site. i don’t waste my time going to an Xbox Site.

BTW i have the original 60GB Model PlayStation 3 and no problems. i bought it NEW and paid over $600.00 for it. i have full faith in Sony.

P.S
If Ken Was Still The Chairman he’d know how to fix the problems the Playstation3 is Having. Come back Ken !

This reminds me, I still have to get around to replacing my PS3’s harddrive.

Sadly, my 60gb PS3 is finally starting to die out on me (I guess that’s what I get for buying it used).

As for Kutaragi, he still actually has plenty to do with PlayStation development, he just no longer heads that department of Sony.

Did that retard say hack the blu-ray out of the console? does this dickhead not know how the PS3 works and that the games are on blu-ray disks and that if the blu-ray drive was “hacked” out then there would be no games to play – what an idiot!

I still wish Sega would try one more round in the Console race. A well-executed comeback would be great. Of course this is coming from a Dreamcast fanboy.

Fake story!

PS3 could no sooner remove the Cell CPU than it could remove the Blu-Ray drive since all games are on blu-ray discs.

Fake article, probably fake analyst & big waste of time.

I had a PS3, honestly, I didnt see anything that GREAT about it. I mean, the reviews on websites, magazines and G4 always seemed to show that the games that were on Xbox360 AND PS3 were better on Xbox360 either because of graphic advantage or no harddrive installs. However, PS3 DOES have MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet going for them. I’m not saying the PS3 sucks or anything, i’m just saying its all on personal preference. I do think the PS3 should drop at LEAST $129 in price since they stripped PS2 support and are still selling PS2 systems. I also notice that Sony is focusing on extra features on the PS3 (and PSP, as well) instead of games. The PSP was an EXCELLENT home-brew system. Emulation of old classic NES, SNES, Genesis, etc, was awesome. Instead of adding extra features to the machine (while blocking out home-brew), they need to focus on good GAMES. Look at the Wii, it has very little extra features, it dont play DVDs or function as a Media Center like the Xbox360 or PS3, but its selling…Why? Because it has GAMES…and..EMULATION (Virtual Console). Sure, the Wii may not have a Cell CPU or a Blu-Ray drive or a harddrive (it needs one for the Virtual Console games), but its really awesome because it has GAMES. The Wii Sports game that came with the machine became an instant classic just like Super Mario Brothers did for the NES. The Wii is pretty much PROOF that gamers like older games and Sony stripping the PS2 support out of the PS3 wasn’t a very smart move. There were/are people that sold/traded in their PS2 to buy a PS3. Now the PS3 does have its good sides. Blu-Ray built-in is awesome. The machine is CAPABLE of kickin Xbox360 ass! They need to utilize the PS3s capability. Over half the PS3 games could fit on a dual-layer DVD disk, so not many games are actually taking advantage of the Blu-Ray capacity. What I think would be kind of cool is, if Sony took games that were based off movies and put the full-length movie on the disk as well. That way you’d have a game and a movie and that would help utilize the Blu-Ray disc capacity and the Xbox360 couldn’t do it b/c of disk size.

I personally feel that the PS3 is to busy catering to a group of individuals that can afford the system rather than what it has always stood for, as the high end take it in the ass M$ killer. When the PS2 came out never did you see a feature missing from each new version of the console (maybe some screws in different places and an’ upgrade mb).

Even if this article was somehow believable I would have to say that with a move like that Sony would go from selling 1,000 units daily to about 10. Not being able to play all the games released up to current date would render the system useless, I mean they already took out the PS2 playback capability (did you notice there was no price drop (f*** you for that sony)). Truth behind the previous mentioned complaint (and strictly in my opinion) was based upon the fact that there was a hack found that could exploit the PS3 (sony obviously denies this). Sony also denied the reasons why they didn’t initially release the rumble featured game pad (apparently it was to sensitive for the six axis, yet wii with more range of motion pulled it off flawlessly, again f*** you sony).

I have so much ranting to do and not enough time, if anyone likes this rant could you please let me know because I am seriously considering starting a website for garbage like this, updated all day every day (yes I have html, css, java and programming capabilities along with flash knowledge, so it won’t be a bore to navigate and read).

Anyway with as little words as possible (and that is hard) SONY, I use to love you, you use to be “THE” system, but with all your lies and cost saving ways (using excuses) how are we to trust anything you say? Obviously, the rumble feature you where to cheap to pay for (or even the HDMI cable for that matter). Here is an idea, make the system $100.00 more. If you haven’t noticed, the higher priced an item is in today’s society the more sacred it is, meaning the more people want it, and with debt being as high as it is… What is the swipe of a MasterCard or VISA anyway? Get your head out of your ass, give the gamers what they bought when got there PS2 (everything was in the box, all PS1 games worked fine, and DVD’s ran great, leave the failure of HD media to the 360.

Actually was is not because ps3 did not put the rumble feature into the controller because they just got over a lawsuit for stealing the idea? I thought the lawsuit did not drop until a little after ps3 came out. I could be wrong.

i own a 360 and ps3 and my sister has a wii and i must say i love 360 the most but i play ps3 here and there BUT I ONLY BOUGHT IT FOR ONE MAIN REASON THAT 360 FAILED TO PROVIDE AND THAT MY FRIENDS WAS HD-DVD AND THATS WHY I WENT AND PICKED UP A PS3 AND PLUS ITS LIKE A CHEAP COMPUTER WITH FULL HD IF SONY TAKES OUT BLU RAY THAN WHAT WILL ALL THE MOVIE COMPANY’S THINK WHEN THEY ABANDONED HD-DVD FOR BLU RAY MICROSOFT COULD POSSIBLY BRING BACK HD-DVD AND BRING IT BACK TO LIFE MEANING THE TRUE DEATH TO PS3 WHICH IT’S VERY CLOSE TO.

i am replying to all you people. a price drop would be good if it is just that (they cut the price) if they do i may be inclined to trade in my 40gb for the 120 gb if it is the same price it was when i bought mine a year ago.

Now with that being said, i own both because i want to be able to play with ALL my friends because were not all exclusive to the PS3. Also what you get when you buy a ps3 is so much more in my opinion.

Tit for tat out of the box here we go

PS3 Xbox 360
blue ray no blue ray
wireless controller Wireless controller
wireless nic card no wireless nic card
no hdmi cable no hdmi cable just composite
blue tooth no blue tooth
no rumble rumble
hd hd
sd slot no sd slot but memory card slot
(has anyone even bought a memory card for it?)

so with that as it is 6 out of 8 for ps3 and 3 out of 8 for xbox 360 so could some one please tell me why you complain about the price i think the money is about right for what you get. but im not saying a price drop is a bad idea oh god no cause i welcome it also but not cause im cheap.

just remember that these are what is included in the box and not taking into cosideration if you purchaced an elite xbox or a bundle pack of any sort. and just so im clear the elite is still 400 dollars and you only get the hdmi cable and more hd space as extras.

i would also like to add that some one said that sony is becoming more like the 360 when it comes to updates and software they offer in the updates. i say more power to them for that cause with the strength of the system as it is adding things like the ability to liste to music no matter if your in an app or not and like the xbox has the party feature that will just make some of the people that like the xbox decide to purchase a ps3 as well. and i dfont want to hear that they wont cause just cause you yourself might not others will no doubt.

For instance my friend after playing little big planet said he may consider buying a ps3 just for games like that for the exclusive games cause thats where the power is it stands with the games that harness the power of the system that the xbox cant compete with. if you take notice that most exclusive games for the xbox are either remakes of other games previously released on the ps2 or games that derived from an older version of the game, as with the ps3 there are plenty of down right new exclusive games for ps3

Hello!

Each time there’s another next-gen war on a thread about PS3.

I own one & love it, i can afford it so don’t care about how others feel about it!

I pay for quality and use it at it’s best, well except for blu-ray movies for don’t have any for now .. but soon will!

Exclusives titles rocks, multi-platforms are same as on xbox360 – some better on PC (the best gaming platform of all time).

PS3 exclusives – real ones – are true exclusives & they are great!
Xbox360 – share most exclusives (except a few) with the PC.

It’s a matter of taste and how much you can pay. If you don’t own one, please don’t say it’s crap – just because i’m sure you never tried these exclusives games!

Moreover, SONY will not remove blu-ray, games developers should not force price cut – the PS3 is the ONLY crack-virgin out there – some minor hacks here and there doesn’t jeopardies the gaming market.

WII is great, but cracked like the xbox360 or any other consoles. PS3 is harder to crack.

Xbox360 fanboys are mostly those who doesn’t really support their console for they use games copies …
they steal!

Cheers!
