In addition to the post on How to play PS2 ISOs on a ps3 on NTSC/JAP PS3s here is one for PAL systems! Again, Use at your own risk, we at ps3-hacks / Dashhacks Inc. cannot take responsibility if you damage your ps3 with this tutorial. Remember, we will not tell you were to get ISOs from… Let’s continue now…
What you need:
- Swap Magic 3.6+/3.8(Purchase here) (Must be actual copy, burned copies do NOT work).
- Launch PS3 PAL PS2 (60gb units)
- Flash Drive (PSP in USB MODE will also work).
- Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack [PAL].
- Extract the contents of the folder USBADVANCE to the root of your flash drive.
- Place the Playstation 2 ISO’s of your choice to your external HDD/flash drive. You need to have them properly formmated and copied over via USBUtil(is included in file you downloaded above). If you are not sure how to do this, there is a quick tutorial that guides you through the process. Make sure your USB/Flash drive is plugged into your PS3.
- Boot up SWAPMAGIC and once loaded into the menu screen, people who are using swapmagic v3.6 press UP (on D-Pad)+L2 on your PS3 controller to browse through your flash drive. People that are using Swapmagic v3.8 go to the SMBOOT menu and select uLaunch from there. In the pack provided uLaunch is SMBOOT1. Go to configure, select any button you want (I usually use X or O), go to MISC and select FILEBROWSER binding it to the selected button, go down and hit ok. Now go to the browser. If you are unable to view your flash drive, then it is not compatible (use another one).
- USB Loader should start running now. And there you have it, if you followed this tutorial properly you should see the Playstation 2 ISO’s there and just click and launch
Copying backups to your USB Drive
Format your external drive/usb drive to FAT/FAT16/FAT32 format.
In the download pack you downloaded there should be a folder called USBUtil, go inside that and run the EXE.
Go to FILE and click on “OPEN ISO to create game”.
Search and click on your PS2 backup, and click CREATE.
The program will now copy the ISO over to your pendrive (it takes some time).

This only works on PS3s that contain the PS2 HARDWARE! That means, Emotion Engine (CPU), and Graphics Synthesizer (GS) + RAM. It does not work on software PS2 backward compatible models, and CERTAINLY will not work on models that DO NOT have it at all!
It is very simple to understand, no HARDWARE, no USBAdvance. This is why it is working on JAP 20/60 models, they HAVE the PS2 hardware.

those tools are only for ps2, for use this you only need the discs, swap magic 3.6+ (plus) or swap magic coder 3.8

As for this hack, pretty useless unless you like ur old ps2 iso’s that u ran on ur ps2. Also a ps2 costs as little as £30 in the uk so im guess it will be nearly as cheap to get a ps2 and use the various hacks out for it.

Useless or not, you have to consider that there are a lot of People (me not included) who have less space in their Living room or whereever they Placed their Console. These People may have some Favourite Games on PS2 System which they like to Play on their PS3 now as they probably cant afford new PS3 Titles. So why not having a way to boot these Disks on PS3 eventhough it just works on the first Models produced.
There always will be some Idealists who will work on Stuff which most of the Posters here even think about or (if their knowledge is good enough) may start doing other “usefull” stuff like this.
And always Remember, booting ISOS on any Console resulted nearly ALWAYS on reversing or booting other applikations (homebrew) on the System you want to modify. So maybe there will be a way in the future booting some PS2 executeable to modify the PS3 System, who knows ?
If you dont want to boot PS2 Backups, okay your thing, but stop blaming somebodys other work who just wanted to share something he thought that might be useful for others. You dont need this tool ? this doesnt work on pal (UK) consoles i tried it following the guide everything works up to the bit where u select your flash drive and when you do all you get is a black screen with a message in spanish saying something about “for all the people who couldnt wait” and that theres some file called ISBD.RXI or something like that that doesnt exist….. so have i done something wrong? or is it just some kinda fake thing??
3×3eyes it did not work for me to but i then used the the other metod were you have to only make a folder with name SWAPMAGIC and put in USBLD_02b.ELF file and renameit to SMBOOT0.elf then when you boot up swap magic press Up + L1 and it workt for me that way….try it maybe it will work for you to…….

I have the UK Launch PS3, just received my swap magic disc, basically just to try it and yes it doesn’t work. Why this post is even here I have no idea. The only ones that can take advantage of this is the Launch Japanese model all others will never be able to use it the way described.

I have a 60gb UK console purchased in June 07 and swapmagic 3.6, mine works fine as stated above. It took me a few goes to get it working, this was because I didn’t read the instructions carefully enough!!!! Not being funny mate but do you really think people are going to say it works then it doesn’t!!! you might get the odd @rsehole saying they can run PS3 iso’s but you can’t accuse everyone of being an @rsehole!!!

Those saying it dont work, fine, think that, the games that play are a ,low ratio at the moment and it still only uses the usb 1 and not usb 2capabilities hence slow video etc etc, game play is the same as playing on ps2 :)

works great for some games, while others don’t work at all, and most work but with chopy unviewable videos.
still, it’s a work in progress and interesting.
also, you don’t need to copy anything to the memory card anymore. just put the main .ELF from version 0.2b of USBloader onto your usb stick/PSP in a folder called SWAPMAGIC and rename it to SMBOOT0.ELF

right, i copyed the contents of SWAPMAGIC to the root of my usb drive, i start swap magic 3.8, go 2 the BOOT menu but i try BOOT0 & BOOT1 & i get a error message, but i try BOOT2 & it loads up the config menu. i select filebrowser as default, let it time out but what do i do after? when i select MASS in the config menu it hangs, is there something im doin wrong?
