How to play PS2 ISO’s on PS3 via USBAdvance (20/60GB NTSC/JAP)

Posted by LeifErikson on February 3, 2009

Hey guys & girls, this is a tutorial on how to boot PlayStation 2 ISO’s on the PS3 (20/60GB NTSC/JAP) via an external HDD. Those with a 20 or 60GB launch PS3 are in luck! That is, if you’re a pirate. Use at your own risk, we at ps3-hacks / Dashhacks Inc. cannot take responsibility if you damage your ps3 with this tutorial. Remember, we will not tell you where to get ISOs from… That said, lets continue…

What you need:

  • Swap Magic 3.6+/3.8 (Purchase here) (Must be actual copy, burned copies do NOT work).
  • Launch PS3 (20/60gb) – NTSC/Japanese (Must have emotion engine, only launch PS3’s had this).
  • Flash Drive (PSP in USB MODE will also work).

If you are a Japanese PS3 user you need to rename the folder BADATA-SYSTEM to BIDATA-SYSTEM -This guide will assume you are a USA user and call the folder “BADATA-SYSTEM” in the download pack.

  1. Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack.
  2. Extract the contents of the folder USBADVANCE to the root of your flash drive/PSP.
  3. Boot up SWAPMAGIC and once loaded into the menu screen, people who are using swapmagic v3.6 press UP (on D-Pad)+L2 on your PS3 controller to browse through your flash drive. People that are using Swapmagic v3.8 go to the SMBOOT menu and select uLaunch from there. In the pack provided uLaunch is SMBOOT1. Go to configure, select any button you want (I usually use X or O), go to MISC and select FILEBROWSER binding it to the selected button, go down and hit ok. Now go to the browser. (Props to Crono for telling us how to use v3.8 Swapmagic). If you are unable to view your flash drive, then it is not compatible (use another one).
  4. Copy the BADATA-SYSTEM folder and USBLD_01.ELF file to your Virtual Memory Card (on PS3).
  5. Go inside BADATA-SYSTEM folder and cut/move the Pictures and SWAPMAGIC folder to ROOT the Virtual Memory Card.
  6. Remove your FLASH DRIVE, press the PS button and quit the game and go back to XMB and launch swap magic.
  7. At this point you should move the Playstation 2 ISO’s of your choice to your external HDD/flash drive. You need to have them properly formmated and copied over via USBExtreme or USBUtil (is included in file you downloaded above). If you are not sure how to do this, there is a quick tutorial that guides you through the process. Make sure your USB/Flash drive is plugged into your PS3.
  8. Once booted, browse and launch USBLD_01.ELF
  9. And there you have it, if you followed this tutorial properly you should see the Playstation 2 ISO’s there and just click and launch

How to copy PS2 ISO’s to a external USB/flash drive
Note: Ps3-Hacks will not link anyone to pirated ISOs — Find them on your own.

Method 1

  1. Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack. (Ignore if you downloaded it in last tutorial), and extract the folder USB EXtreme to you desktop.
  2. Plug in your USB HDD (or Flash drive)
  3. Put a PS2 game into your disc drive (if the game is already on your computer you can mount it with Alcohol 120)
  4. Open up the USB EXTREME tool on your computer.
  5. Select your Disc Drive the PS2 game is in, Media type (most are DVD’s) and your USB/Flash drive.
  6. Now you can name the game and hit start.
  7. There you have it a properly copied game to your HDD, just pop it in your PS3 and follow step 8 from above.

Method 2 (Easier Method)

  1. Download USButil
  2. Format your external drive/usb drive to FAT/FAT16/FAT32 format.
  3. In the download pack you downloaded there should be a folder called USBUtil, go inside that and run the EXE.
  4. Go to FILE and click on “OPEN ISO to create game”.
  5. Search and click on your PS2 backup, and click CREATE.
  6. The program will now copy the ISO over to your pendrive (it takes some time).

JESUS SAVES +++

AND SO DOES TEH SCENE.. now if i can make use of my internal 750 gb hdd :) my resistance is getting very scratched up

Go to Jesus in faith before bill gates attacks with his alien buddies .. after u have eternity secured… then play a lil bit of hacked ps3 + + +

This works great by the way !

This only works on PS3s that contain the PS2 HARDWARE! That means, Emotion Engine (CPU), and Graphics Synthesizer (GS) + RAM. It does not work on software PS2 backward compatible models, and CERTAINLY will not work on models that DO NOT have it at all!

It is very simple to understand, no HARDWARE, no USBAdvance. This is why it is working on JAP 20/60 models, they HAVE the PS2 hardware.

I think it’s wrong that the application that makes the PS3 able to boot PS2 games costs money. And I don’t think that you have to buy this application. Why wouldn’t it be possible to install a hacked version?

Why make this app work with USBExtreme when the external HD is going to be sooooooooo slow in loading games.

Why not take the HDLoader elf and apply the same changes so that you can dump the games on the internal HD of PS3 and load PS2 games from there. Now that would be sweeeeeeet and efficient

Will this work with both PAL and NTSC games? If so I’ll buy the swapmagic. My PS3 is jp from launch, so it can only play legit jp games, so I wonder if this hack can bypass that lame region lock.

Well, well, well look at that. A Hack? Amazingly.

Well I have a 60GB launch PS3 with the PS2 hardware inside so I’ll have to read up on this to see about how to do this when I get some free time. Provided there’s no new mandatory firmware update coming out before then. Of course since this only works for models with the PS2 chips inside them, the firmware update might be tricky for sony as they’ll have to make any update to patch and stop this works correctly on the launch editions of the PS3 and doesn’t screw up on the models that don’t have the PS2 hardware compatibility inside them.

Would you buy a car if you can’t pay for insurance, gas or maintain it? or a house if you can’t pay mortgage or taxes?

If you founded Sony, would you like to hear your garbage?
What did Sony ever do to you?
Would you work for free?
Would you like it if people were ripping you off?

Your ignorance is off the chart man. At least be discreet about it jeez…

“Just because it says it can’t doesn’t mean no one has tried, dick”

how do you figure this one out?

Did you not read the title?

“How to play PS2 ISO’s on PS3 via USBAdvance (20/60GB NTSC/JAP)”

if 80 gigs worked then it would have been 20/60/80 gigs

As powerslave would say,

Time for school.

20/60 gig (launch models) ps3s work with this because of “emotion chip” that was included with this specific models. Sony later on took this option out and used software emulation to cut back on the cost of the machine. (original 80 gigs) That’s why the people specifically stated for “20/60″ gig models. Also, they have more people testing out their programs then you think. So yea I’m 99.99999% sure that they have tried it on 80 gig models. (both new and the older version)

look man, just stop it right here, you are starting to look stupid…. notice that your the only one that’s talking about getting it to work on your 80 gig and believe it or not, I wasn’t trying to be mean with my previous post. I simply gave the answer and directed it to the post where it clears states it.

Not my fault that you are

a.) too lazy to read the whole post. (well title in this case)
b.) can’t read
c.) all of the above.

if you want to be a bitch and act like a 12yr old girl with vaginal discharge then be my guest. Just be sure you know your shit before you start talking.

in case anyone still cares bout this try the following:
-use USBUtil ver 1.02 and not USB EXtreme!!!
-check this site out list.sksapps (dot) com
-use cd swap magic for cd format game (like “The Thing”)
-use dvd swap magic for dvd game (like “Katamari”)
it seems that if the game has too many videos it will not work and if there is a long video at the beginning of the game (right after loading the disc) it will not work but aside from that it works alright.
