Update: My buddy Leif Erikson just informed me that the kick ass ps3 just got a firmware update! w00t! Get it via System Update.
Word via the PlayStation Blog: expect PS3 firmware version 2.60 soon. What’s in store? Enhanced media capabilities; the new Photo Gallery, which will be a separate installable XMB menu item under the Photo icon, and DivX 3.11 support. As well, 2.60 will feature guest access to the PlayStation Store.

I like it, but I wish sony would do more like tidying up the xmb as they keey brining out new features which is great! But the xmb is so messy, they need to work more about speed and performance and get this thing booted up as to me it seems to take forever to boot up, is it me or with every firmware it seems a lill slower? Also do a few tweaking here and there, either get rid or improve the information bar. you have a whole screen and they only use not even half of it?
The slowdown must be a problem with your own PS3 because the XMB still performs just as well for me as it did when I first got my PS3, and I feel like it performs just great. There are occasionally some questionable loading times for thumbnails, and they could definitely do some sort of caching to help with that, but otherwise it works great.
The in-game XMB definitely needs some improvements though, if you ask me. I can understand the lag on some processor heavy titles, but lagging on stuff like Megaman 9 is just a little sad. It would also be nice to be able to access a few more features from within the in-game XMB, like some settings (particularly network settings) as well as the browser.
As for in-game music, you all need to stop bitching at Sony and start bitching at developers. They have the ability to allow in-game music, and if they don’t do so, it’s their fault not Sony’s.
Yeah I know what you mean about the in game xmb, I have a jap console with the uk firmware if that were to make any difforence or not. I would like to have internet browser accessable via in game xmb so I could look up tips and tricks to some of my games.

Ya, I noticed the new update a few minutes ago, just bought GTA and went to play online and saw it, but I dont trust my ps3’s connection enough to update from the system, and I dont see it on the sony site or anywhere else…

i just downloaded and installed the update in less than 10 minutes thats how it has always worked for me ive had my ps3 for almost a year and it still works like the day i got it so stop hating they got alot of stuff to work onlike the fact that they lose $200 for every playstation sold so that you can aford it and also it is true that maketing is horible in sony so they should get someone else but you gotta give them some credit they have put out the most advanced console on the market.
I still like my Dreamcast more than my PS3… I couldnt care less if the PS3 is “more advanced”.

i just tested the new photo app offered by Sony in this latest PS3 firmware its kinda fun to play with and produces nice images to look at…well thanks again to Sony for this update…this is good but there is still frustration with the gaming part of the PS3 mainly the lack of games..main reason we actually bought the console.The gaming part is where i think all updates should be focused on.

the ps3 has always been marketed as a media device. they even tried to patent it as such but it was refused because closed minded people said because it can play games it must be a console… the media features of the ps3 have always been a big part of its appeal. Play doesnt just mean play games…it means play music, play films…. if you just use the ps3 for playing games then youre missing out on 50% of its features
im all in favour for playing media on the ps3 but since ot was first brought out the empsis on games is next to none, after the succsess of the ps2 games you would expect them to follow not alinait the die hard gamers, the amount of updates with usless stuff, they should listen to what we want! if they put as much effot into the gaming side as they did the media side it would be an amazing console!

I haven’t played with this new feature yet, but I think some of the posters here need to chill. It’s pretty obvious that the PS3 development team isn’t just one guy, they most certainly have several development teams working in tandem to release features as they go. nothing wrong with that, it just keeps a constant trickle of updates and features. The only thing I would ask from Sony is that they give us a roadmap of where they’d like to take the platform. Why new features can we expect? Patches arrive with little forewarning. This may be great for the developers as they can work without major hard deadlines they have to meet, but the customers may not understand where things are going. As we see on this thread here some think Sony has lost focus and is concentrating on frivolous features, yet update 3.0 could be coming out next month with mega awesome features that everyone will drool over. Problem is we don’t know about it and get belligerent.
