DualShock 3 Device Drivers for Windows

Posted by greg on January 13, 2009

Say what, an update?! *Kicks a cart* You know it!

There isn’t much going on in the ol’ PS3 scene — no hacks, no nothing worthy of mention really… But this — this deserves a spot — Windows device drivers for the PS3 Sixaxis / DualShock 3 controller. And you’ll be happy to know the DualShock 3 Rumble feature is now supported. Do note: this doesn’t work over Bluetooth — only USB. Check it…

Download:
PS3 Sixaxis/DualShock 3 Device Drivers
(Rumble drivers included; 32bit XP, Vista, Server 2003 supported)

so, not anything for 64 bit or win 7?

Most people don’t run 64-bit since there’s no code optimized to run and take advantage of it. Secondly if it works for vista then it should work for win7 since most all drivers released that compatible for win7 are the same ones you can use on win7 for people that are using win7 for preview testings purposes.

Um, if you don’t run a 64 bit OS you are limited to 4 gigs or less of RAM, therefore many people run 64 bit OSes. And there is plenty of code optimized for 64 bit these days, take Crysis for example. The fact that 64 bit is so ignored by some companies really gets my goat!

Yeah Crysis – one game, that’s a big list there to back up your argument. There’s also Hellgate London.

There is 64-bit software that is starting to appear to take advantage of all the extra capable cpu’s with AMD64 or EMT64 support out there and for users that have 4GB or more memory out there. However there needs to be better implementation. Crysis was developed well in that it ships with two exe’s a 32bit and a 64bit exe. Hellgate London on the other hand broke single, multiplayer and other things up into separate exe’s totaling 8 exe’s, 4 for 32bit and 4 for 64bit, very lousy implementation.

Crysis needs 64 bit as on the 32bit OS it uses near the 2GB limit for application space. On 64 it has plenty of room, it’s obvious why they made it 64bit capable and optimized since the development team found out early on that the game was quite limited and near the breaking point on 32bit. Using 1.7GB is near the limit of 2GB as you only are suppose to have 2GB for applications and 2GB for the OS on a 32bit platform.

As for other games I haven’t heard much of any others being optimized for 64bit. If you’re not running something that needs the memory space or that’s optimized for 64bit then it’s just a 32bit application that’s being run through a windows 32-64 bit compatibility layer, in which case it runs seamlessly on windows 64bit it just uses a 64bit address space instead of the normal 32bit address space it would normally use on a 32bit Operating system. If you’re running 64bit windows you better load up on ram since everything runs in 64bits of address space, even the 32bit apps so your memory’s going to get eaten up faster depending how much you have open.

Oh btw FYI Windows Server 2K Advanced Server & Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition both 32bit versions both let you use 8GB and 32GB on a 32bit platform if you want to stick to a 32bit world and have a ton of memory. ; )

Servers usually use more than one physical CPU and I guess they have PAE (Physical Adress Extention) too. Totally different platform.

Crysis itself on Vista x64 use about 1-2GB of RAM so that’s a valid reason for x64.

Besides, Vista x86 is totaly ****ed anyways.

“If you’re running 64bit windows you better load up on ram since everything runs in 64bits of address space, even the 32bit apps so your memory’s going to get eaten up faster depending how much you have open.”

Err… what? Because if you put something inside a box that something will obviously grow, right?

Servers were the only thing that used to have more then one processor until they started making double, triple and quad core systems for home users. If you check you’ll notice a lot of dual-cores now also support PAE, not much difference there anymore; there was a difference some time ago but now it’s not as big a difference at least in terms of memory and cpu’s; you can run a system that could technically be classified as a server in your home. Quad-core, 8GB of Ram, Terrabyte Hard drive, etc.

Crysis

1.7 ~ or so GB on 32bit.
2.7 ~ or so GB on 64bit.

At highest-quality settings, x86 game is very close to stability boundary of 2GB, while x64 game has plenty of VA space left to run in.

“… what? Because if you put something inside a box that something will obviously grow, right?”

No, because you everything is getting 64bits of memory addressing.

Yeah, 32bit is starting to get antiquated. Memory is cheap and there’s no real reason to stick to the older OS’s anymore. I mean, if you don’t do much with your PC it’s fine… but if you do any programming, video/audio editing, it’s smart to get more memory and update your OS to 64-bit. Mine runs all games beautifully and at maximum settings. It’s odd to see people keep plugging away at 32bit when there’s so much more power in 64.

Is it that hard to make the drivers for 64-bit? Or are they just lazy?

I didn’t think it would be that hard. Isn’t it just change a little bit of code?

Comment by LastmanOut
2009-01-15 20:46:57

It’s probably because the vast majority of users are on 32-bit Operating systems. So of course they are going to code it for 32-bit.

Comment by VInny
2009-01-16 07:17:30

Sure 32-bit is the majority. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t make any for 64-bit.

Comment by LastmanOut
2009-01-30 20:16:33

No but they are probably developing these 3rd party drivers and homebrew based on what machine they work on the most and for the majority of users, which is 32bit. Now with Core i7 machines that use 6GB starting the future should hopefully finally come full-circle and we can move to 64 bit native applications, not just 32bit ones emulated via 64bit emulation layer. Obviously when the people that spent the time to write and develop these drivers are on 64bit platforms then they’ll be writing more 64bit stuff. Of course who knows maybe he’ll release a 64 bit version, could be the 32 bit version was easier or faster to code. Wishful thinking.

Windows Vista 32-bit.

Connect Sixaxsis or Dualschock3 to pc via USB cable.

Let Vista install it’s USB HID Human Interface Device drivers.

Go to Device Manager.

Expand Human Interface Devices (HID)

Select the second device, USB human interface device; not the first one that is listed as HID-complaint game controller.

Right-click and select update driver.

Select Option Browse My Computer for driver software.

On the next screen select option “Let me select from a list of device drivers on my computer”

Next page select have disk. From there you select the driver you get from the download. I used the same file and folder mentioned in the video for Vista. Worked fine.

Must be because enthusiasts and gamers are going 64-bit to take advantage of CPU’s with support for 64-bit. Same thing for having more than 2GB of available memory space for applications.

This does NOT work. On Vista, you cannot select a specific file, only a containing folder. And Vista does NOT recognize the drivers in the folder as legit. Any other methods?

Comment by LastmanOut

You’re not selecting the correct option.

You’re selecting the browse / navigation button above, that only allows you to select folders.

If you select the option underneath that reads “Let me Pick from a list of drivers on my computer” and then select “have disk” on the next page you can select individual files.

I run XP SP2 x64, and this is lame, the driver developer only has a 32 bit Windows OS and a 32 Bit CPU, hence no x64 driver, But honestly this is horrific, I have this brand new Dual Shock 3 I was hoping to use on my PC for games like GTA and emulation, and its useless all because I have the OS for my CPU, I have Dual Shock 2’s and I could get a USB adapter for one for a small fee and use that but its just so inconvenient to justify the expenditure. I also have several 360 controllers and the wireless receiver for Windows, but the keys are not bindable in the way they should be due to the drivers with it. It’s therefore completely useless for GTA as you can’t bind the things you need to bind to drive a car correctly or navigate on foot. So screwed with the PS3 controller and screwed with the 360 one that is SUPPOSED TO FUNCTION. I should have not wasted my money on the receiver or the controller and instead got a USB adapter for a Dual Shock 2 or got a WIRED 360 Controller for the PC.
