Should you have 200 some odd PS3s lying around the ol’ homestead, you may as well link those bad boys together, setup shop, and forge some trusted SSL certificates… That’s what a team of researchers from the U.S., Switzerland, and the Netherlands successfully pulled off using a large PlayStation 3 cluster. They plan to detail their technique at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress (25C3) in Berlin today.
At issue is the crypto technology used to ensure visitors to Amazon.com, for example, are actually connected to the online retailer and not to a fake site erected by a fraudster. That assurance comes from a digital certificate that’s vouched for and digitally signed by a trusted authority like Verisign. The certificate is transmitted to a user’s browser and automatically verified during SSL connections — the high-security web links heralded by a locked-padlock icon in the browser.
Key to the signing process is a so-called hash function — an algorithm that turns a digital file into a small fingerprint of a fixed size. To prevent forgery, the hash function must make it practically impossible for anyone to create two files that will boil down to the same hash.

so what does this mean?
It means they are using them to test the security of the algorithm check / creation used in verifying internet websites are legit and secure.
“We can impersonate Amazon.com and you won’t notice,” says David Molnar, a computer science PhD candidate at UC Berkeley. “The padlock will be there and everything will look like it’s a perfectly ordinary certificate.”
Says they used the power of all those CELL CPU’s to forge amazon.com. They got the same certificate, use a DNS spoof and you’re as legit as provable. Same cert, name and dns resolve.
Not a lot of use as far as hacking or homebrew on the ps3 if that’s what you’re wondering or anything to that matter. Just further research being done by scientist using their favorite Cell based system.

Now why do people say stuff like that? Have you ever stopped to realise that PS£-Hacks is just a name and the ps3 will get hacked long after the console is dumped. There never will be or get hacked in it’s lifetime so just grow up! All these guys are doing is keeping us all up to date with the latest news which some of it, not all but some is verryinteresting. If you want a hack then do it yourself, I am sure that hackers are working round the clock to find something but as you know if an exploit is found sony will releace a firmware update to cover it up before it comes of anything. The only way to get around this is to not update but you will be stuck on an old firmware and you will not see your ps3 evolve all for the sake of displaying hello world!

Either they are using one core on each system or they could be using an application like the folding at home that they got licensed and approved by sony to install on the system to use it to the max.
Some time ago you also could access the RSX GPU under linux, then firmware 2.20 or something around there patched it to prevent you from accessing and utilizing it.
That one was a pitty because if it wasn’t patched you could very well have developed and worked on making 1) linux run faster on the ps3, 2) install and make PS2 emulator – pcsx2 work better on the ps3 under linux. That would of solved and given users without the software emulation the ability to play ps2’s on their systems, provided it got enough work put into it.

Well now there’s a book that seems worth reading. Microsoft using it’s ties with IBM got IBM to give up details of the Cell processor and made a variation of it using the R&D that was found and made on the Original. So in a way you can say the chip inside the Xbox360 is a shell or a core of the Cell except they made it easier to code for it apparently, or so they say. So let’s see Microsoft used it’s ties to IBM and no doubt some of it’s deep pockets to undermind sony and basically take the best of cell and use that information and knowledge attained to create their own chip. Damn, didn’t know IBM was that low, bit of a trader and a sellout. ( Writing this on a IBM Thinkpad T21 machine ) Planning on getting a T500 soon, but damn IBM’s a bit of stab in the back to sony, but then again, it mentions that Sony didn’t put it in the contract that the chips designs and plans, blueprints and research and development data was not to be allowed anywhere near Microsoft’s eyes.

Basically they brute forced SSL. Worse case scenario you get trojaned or something with a client side malware and people who use this can get you to send logins to a fraudulent server that the malware redirects you to with false security. Or they use it if they find a URL spoof vulnerability via hotlinking.

im not meant to tell anyone this as its top secret, but microsoft have been over at sony discussing the Xbox360 emulator for the PS3, basically it will be a comercially available disk that will allow you to load Windows 2009 Desktop and also run a full speed Xbox 360 emulatior.
It will cost £139 or $199, not bad when you consider it can run all games 1.5 times smoother and faster if required.
