A Java PS3 Media Server

Posted by greg on December 25, 2008

Whether you’ve just cracked open that virgin PS3 this morning, or you’ve been using and abusing that beautiful piece of hardware since day one, you need a quality media server that isn’t troublesome or a headache-inducing annoyance… That’s when this cross-platform Java written PS3 Media Server comes into the picture.

PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant UPNP Media Server for the PS3, written in Java, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding any kind of media files, with minimum configuration. It’s backed up with the powerful Mplayer/FFmpeg packages.

PS3 Media Server features:

  • Ready to launch and play. No codec packs to install. No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing. All your folders are directly browsed by the PS3, there’s an automatic refresh also.
  • Real-time video transcoding via MEncoder, tsMuxer or Avisynth.
  • DVD ISOs images / VIDEO_TS Folder transcoder.
  • OGG/FLAC/MPC/APE audio transcoding.
  • Thumbnail generation for Videos.
  • You can choose with a virtual folder system your audio/subtitle language on the PS3!
  • All formats PS3 natively supports: MP3/WMA, JPG/PNG/GIF/TIFF, and all kind of videos (AVI, MP4, TS, M2TS, MPEG) the ps3 is willing to play.
  • ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders for pictures/audio files.
  • Preliminary support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb.
  • Preliminary Internet TV / Web Radio support with VLC, MEncoder or MPlayer.

Windows only:

  • Lossless 5.1 PCM transcoding with DTS movies.

Ed even says it streams MKV’s with ease.

Now, because this project is likely to be updated frequently, I’ll link you to the Google Code page for all available downloads.

Comment by Draknoid

The best anti-Virus is no anti-virus if you know how to use your computer you know how to not get infected. And if you do you know how to solve in it less than 10 sec(figure of speech). That’s “Knowing” how to use a computer. U remind me of the people that downloads hacking tools and their anti-virus spots it and they complain on the forums about it not knowing that “Hacking” tools are considered malicious applications.

sorry we are all not as experienced in computers and masturbating over internet porn and only socializing in WoW as yourself. But i use kaspersky and it is one of the best out there, though sometimes it detects “POTENTIAL” viruses that are not really viruses its just the way the software behaves.

Comment by Erik
2008-12-27 13:42:29

It’s not a virus, vista is good if you know how to optimize it, and no anti virus is actually a bad thing. It’s better to have something that you run when you need too. Just turn off the auto detect stuff and if you notice anything weird, run it and see what it finds.

Ripperd you fucking retard, it’s called heuristic scanning, it detects what a program is designed to do and if it finds it opens ports etc, then it will flag it, based on characteristics of virii. It’s called a false positive you twat.

If you have a decent hardware firewall, and you’re not a complete 15 yr old angst ridden noob like ripperd, you should be fine, but i’d still recommend antivirus aswell.

And fuck you tomas, he’s letting people know not to take the word of a fucktard like ripperd.

Would be nice if they made one that worked with JAVA 5 and not only just 6, us Intel Core Duo mac people can’t use this. Only works with the 64 Bit machines that use Intel Core 2. Or in other cases if you are using it on Linux or Windows then it should work fine. Ooh well i’ll stick to EyeConnect.

There is a Mac version also, have you not tried?

“PS3 Media Server for Mac OSX 1.01″

Comment by Anthony
2008-12-30 07:50:35

I know I downloaded the MAC version, but with our Version Intel Core Processors they don’t require Java 5 all the new PC’s and MACS use Intel Core 2 processors, so I can not use this, seeing I don’t have Java 6, so until they make a version of this that you can use with Java 5 then I’ll have to stick with using EyeConnect.

Really? I loathed SimpleCenter since most of the video files I tried to stream came back as “unsupported data” on the PS3. Not to mention it was a resource hog.

This program is brilliant, and I haven’t run into a file that doesn’t play perfectly.

Comment by burnedandfrozen

i haven’t had any problems. i use it to copy videos, music, and pictures to my ps3 hdd. as for a resource hog, it doesn’t bog me down at all. i can barely tell its running. i may try this program recommended in the future if i start having problems.

tried it… and i usually use tversity… This is so much better than it. It actually works all the time. With Tversity on my xp machine it played back about 80pc of the stuff, even if it was in divx. This was the same for the VISTA machine, however every second day the server would dissapear for some reason.

PS3 Media server worked flawlessly on everything including HD MKV, divx, and DVD iso files. more like XBMC but not as cool looking. I will continue to try this :D I mean. Who doesn’t want HD content streamed :D

TVersity is fine as long as your not a total noob.

Open a port in the firewall, set it as an automatic service…works all the time.

And when you add something, just hit the refresh library button. I’ve got a few blu-ray rips that only play with TVersity.

Best thing is to get MKV2VOB and convert .mkv files to Mpeg’s……….the quality is perfect and even the Windows Media Player can play them.

Wow the comments in this thread really need to be sorted out.

This is a great product, I have this installed on my Windows Home Server and so far no problems. I spoke to the developer who said he will be adding the option to install as a service in the next release or so. This will allow Windows Home Server to be logged off whilst running this product.

Basically if the movie is in a format that the PS3 can play it will just stream, (not encode), the file to the PS3. If the format needs encoding then it will encode it on the fly.

The layout on the PS3 is good, displays the files as they are on your PC in a directory format. Each directory has another directory called TRANSCODE. If you select this directory then you’ll see a list of files the same as the previous directory, however if you select one the file will be transcoded on the fly, i.e you use this for films that are in a format that the PS3 can;t play.

I’m running this on a server with Windows Home Server, 2.4GB dual core with 2GB RAM. This product, although simple and basic, has 100% success for me. It works better for me than TVersity, Twonky etc. It’s not bloated, doesn’t need installing, just simple and works.

Best program for me for the PS3. Pictures & MP3s work as well.

Hope this is useful to somebody.

Azureus comes included with the UPnP Media Server plugin. By default no files will be made available via its service. However, “Azureus” may start showing up on your devices that access UPnP Media Servers.

Downloaded files can be streamed to players (both local and remote) by using the “Media Server” context menu options available in the MyTorrents view and specific download’s Files view.

If publishing of content is enabled this allows UPnP Media Server players to browse and stream downloads managed by Azureus.

Azureus is quite good when it comes to streaming but a PIA when it comes to setting it up – sometimes folder shares won’t get recognised for example. I have used Medialink and Azureus to do the same job and Azureus is rock solid but Medialink is a lot more elegant. Unfortunately both Azureus & Medialink also srewed up my console.log files which were all of a sudden 35GB. I am very much looking forward to trying this new software.

Perhaps the amount of data being pumped thru is just too much? I take it you’re using ethernet (rj45 cat5e)?

Wired network should be gigabit, unfortunately the wireless in the ps3, in oz at least, only supports 802.11b/g, so no n+ goodness for now.

This program is easier than playing games on my PS3. No more transferring movies to memory stick, no more burning to disc wasting discs and space for them to get dusty and most of all, no more hassle. No installation is required. Turn on your PS3, click the .exe file on your PC, set the folder in the program on your PC you want to share and your done. The PS3 automagically finds the server and/or the program finds your PS3 and your done. I want to thank the maker of this fine app and hope there is updates to come.

Working on Windows XP SP3
Quad Core
Wireless N (secured network)

FLAWLESS

Have tested:
.avi
.divx
.vob
.mkv
.mpg
.mpeg

and more that I’m probably forgetting.

Thanks again.

lol, fuck M$, i use only linux on my non gaming machines. Ubuntu 8.1 is great even for noobs, and i personally think it’s better than windoze.

Please don’t take it as elitism, and all that bollocks, pc’s are brilliant, they’re designed to be played around with, open source if you will.

Learn some shit in the process, get a barebones pc together using shit, giggles, odds and ends, you’ll be amazed at the performance afforded by a lowend crapbox running a linux variance, secure as hell aswell.

On the cable front aswell, if you’re running network cable thru your house, just remember cat6a will give you up to just over 20gigabit per second, as a data network cable, and also for hdmi aswell. Data and media rooms, cat 6a kicks ass.

Peace.

PS3 Media Server is awesome. I’ve avoided freebie solutions before because they’ve always needed some tweaking or yet more third party/open source add-ons to make them work. But this thing, you just install and run. It’s all self contained, no need for extra codecs etc.

Heck it even searches for your PS3 on the network if the PS3 is powered up and establishes the link.

And the real kicker? It will stream movies in MKV containers! Wahoo! Try it and you’ll never want to go back to Tversity or any other solution.

This will also stream web content to the PS3, such as Flickr albums and even internet radio and TV stations.

It does what it claims to with no misleading expectations.

Simply amazing media server software. period.

It combines all those other programs to convert virtually any video/audio you might have into a format that the PS3 plays.

I have spent the last few days trying to use Orb and TVesrsity…and programs like mkv2vob, all types of converters and media splitter software and reformatting file systems..

Ps3 media server does everything for you flawlessly most of the time.

its god-sent- simply amazing…I forgot the last time i used a product and it worked so well and fit my needs so perfectly. I will donate because if i found this in a store I would easily pay $50+ for it.

oh, and of course not only does it convert but it seamlessly streams the content to your ps3.

btw, I have:
- p9400(?) quad core processor
-6gb RAM
-100MB wlan connection
-the network isn’t shared with any other devices (my other desktop is off 99% of the time)
