Somewhat useless, as far as I’m concerned; but perhaps someone will prove me otherwise. Over at ps3gen a firmware 2.50 discovery was made — the PS3 Recovery Menu.
While the PS3 is in standby mode, press and hold the power button until you hear two consecutive beeps. When prompted, attach the controller via USB and press the PS button. News tipper, Mentality, confirms it.
Tech support probably uses this in attempt to recover your console should the damage be minimal; otherwise, you’re FedExing that PS3 out for repair. But maybe, just maybe — this Recovery Menu can be exploited somehow, someway…

There are a number of good points with this recovery menu, you can re-install the same firmware – IE 2.50 can be re-installed again, I wonder when sony release another firmware if you will be able to actually downgrade back to 2.50, it would appear you can’t go lower as stated in the menu when you select system update it tells you it must be from 2.50. So if a custom firmware where to be designed it could be the the same firmware revision, something like say 2.50M33 (just to make a point.) I think the only thing we have to work out here is how to make a custom firmware for the PS3 and how to get the console to think its official. I think both are resonably possible, so Sony might have shot themselves in the foot with this one. Stick tight guys might be abit of a wait, but this is probably the one. Not to say it definatly will be, looking at problems in the past with the PS3 and getting past it’s security, the recovery menu could be in total lock down meaning still no way in, but there could be light at the end of the tunnel.

anyway, it looks like sony learned its lesson with the psp and has applied it well to the ps3. sony has taken their time with the firmware updates, no doubt to check and make sure that they cant be hacked, or at least not hacked easily. my guess is that sony tested the hell out of this thing before releasing it. adding in a recovery console/menu/mode is one of the fastest tickets to hell and back in terms of being hacked, so my guess is sony took all the measures necessary to make sure that its not going to happen (or at least happen easily).

this is NOT in any way a suprise, and if it is a surprise to you you need to grow a brain stem. companies hire professional hackers to go in and find the security holes in their networks/software. its not an uncommon practice in the least little bit, and it should be painfully obvious as to why these companies hire people to do this. also, its a job that pays VERY well, and usually these people have signed very strict agreements with the companies so that if they ever do give out what they know they will not only get their asses sued off but will also probably end up in prison as well.

i am the ps3’s # 1 programmer pretty much we recently decided to not worry about real in game music or snapshots if games want to do it fine but we dont, get an xbox if you want something simple like that. Our latest projects consist of seeing how far we can actually shove the ps3 up our bums, we’re not getting to far at the moment but im sure we will, but we just might have to wait for the new slim ps3 to come out. To the people that are having problems getting this to work. I can honestly confirm this recovery menu to be 100% real so after one failed attempt try again, sometimes mine just turns on and turns off the first time, but second time it never fails.
You will hear one beep first, but wait for the two consecutive beeps, do not lift your finger off untill you hear those two beeps first. Also you MUST be on firmware 2.50. I cannot stress this enough, it is definatly real, what it will lead to as of yet is unknown.

For those of you getting the 1 beep only, here’s what i did to get it working
firstly turn the ps3 off (into standby mode)
press and hold the power button, you will get the first beep.
while holding, you will get a second beep (keep holding)
if you don’t get two beeps after, you’re ps3 will go back into standdy mode, that’s natural.
repeat the process and on the second time you will get the 1st beep, then the same second beep. then finally the two consecutive beeps should come straight after the second beep

I’m not sure if someone wrote this or not but start it up by holding the power button and wait until you here the two beeps. If you don’t hear them, don’t despair, just keep your finger on the button and it will shut itself off (as long as you continually held the button throughout the processt). When it goes back into stand-by mode, repeat the process. This time, it should boot into the recovery menu about 15 seconds after the two *BEEPBEEP*’s occur. Attach your PS3 controller via USB to the system and your set to wipe everything on your PS3… (don’t really do that).

no that will not work, first you have to somehow remove the disk without the ps3 knowing u are doing it. its harder to do on the ps3 because it has a sensor in it that tells the system if there is a disk or not

ive heard if you remove lead from power and tv and plug in a chipped ps2 there is some success, i cant confirm this as i only get one beep.

i mean you copy the code that makes an update official into an update file like of a m33 update. they can try to do it on psp and then test the same thing on ps3. everything is almost possible on a psp nowadays. just try to make the update as if its official no loaders or anything
You can’t as the official ones are signed off by sony with digital signatures which can’t be copied, or you would be using Sony’s code with means they would come after you.
The reason the psp is so wide open is because it was broken early and it’s internals and it’s insides and work abouts are pretty well known now, making updates to the hardware and boot code are the only things that are really effective at stopping psp hacking. At least til it’s broken. Case being the TA-082 which was broken, and now the TA-088 v3 board.
Can’t make no such update official since all the reason the m33 updates work so nicely and official looking is because your already running custom, non-official firmware and then you just run more of that, no security.

the use of a recovery menu is to restore a hard drive which is probably skrewed by searching and attempting to repair bad disk sectors. so what do you expect to hack exactly? an already damaged disk? or the disk repair software?

use the install system software feature to sometime in the near future make it install a CUSTOM FIRMWARE.
change it so tht if u needed to access the recovery menu anytime, when u ture the ps3 on u jus need to hold down the R button on ur controler.

This is how to get to the recovery menu for people that can’t get to it because ps3-hacks doesn’t tell you how to do it right.
1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.
the Rebuild the data base option on their makes me wonder if we can get to the source code. I didnt mess with it thogh cause I do not know how to use code.
i used this feature way before firmware 2.50 because i installed linux and screwed up my ps3 i did this back with 2.3+ its also in the manual if you need to reset it
i kno a million ppl have already explained this, but heres a clear and simple way to do it:
1) turn ur ps3 off with the option all the way to the left on ur xmb(main menu)
2) have ur usb cable half way plugged in to ur ps3 controler which should be OFF.
3) hold ur finger on the poewr button untill u here it beep twice in a row quikly..
4) remove ur finger, push the usb cable ALL THE WAY IN to ur controler and press the button on the controler tht turns it on..
5) run ur ps3 over with ur car, then soak the remains in gasoline & light the bitch up..lol JP do tht with a 360!! :D

on the psp, u can play pretty much EVERY ps1 game ever created. all they do is fix the buttons around to make it compatible on the psp, then convert it to an eboot for the psp :)

seems some people are having trouble seeing the recovery menu? just do the following.
1. put ps3 in standby
2. hold finger on power button until the ps3 turns on and then back into standby *hold all the time*
3. hold finger on power button, you will hear 1 beep, then 2 quick beeps.. take finger off the button
your now in standby.
just a few hours ago my ps3 seemed to have died, kept stalling at the startup spirals animation, after entering the recovery mode and selecting option 3 *restore system files*.. my ps3 restarted by itself and gave me a message saying harddrive corrupt and a progress bar while it repaired the problem. this happened 3 times in a row all by itself.. and when the ps3 reset itself the 4th time, everything was back to normal… all my demos/game saves/install games, everything was untouched.
looks like this is the fix to the so called “by others on another forum” spirals of death.
