Update: According to reputable sources — this is in fact legit. StreetskaterFU (remember?) has supposedly discovered a method to run [older] Blu-ray games from the HDD. Still nothing concrete.
More speculation, less hard evidence…
Another video has surfaced which apparently showcases the PS3 loading/playing backed-up games off a HDD. Although, afterward, you’ll likely be left scratching your head asking, “what the hell did I just watch?”
And as for that all-too-familiar sound in the background… I’d disregard it. Lets not question what’s happening behind the scenes.
The video shows:
- Warhawk running from HDD
- no PKG version
- no WH disc while WH is running
- Motorstorm running as proxy disc
- legal way
I wont explain the details here till the project is finished 100%, also cuz many devs want to take a look at first and not get it patched that fast. I can say that if all will work like I want it to you’ll need:
- “special” game dump of the game you want to play from HDD
- one (any) original bd game
- 2x minimum 60GB HDD’s (illegal way – it worx but its not allowed in most countrys – its working like a packed game on psp memory stick)
OR
-1 60GB HDD + original disc (legal way – no need to be inserted while playing)
Im using newest firmware PAL 60GB SKU. 3 games tested yet – working.
Games which should be possible from the knowledge i got yet:- Warhawk
- Motorstorm
- Resistance
- GT5
- COD3
- …I cant check more atm, as I dont have else here. The final way will be a bit different than the video shows. Even there are 2 different ways then to do it, thats because there are 2 different groups of games. One can be done with 1 HDD but then you need the original disk of the game.

There is nothing to suggest that Warhawk wasn’t being run via blu ray disc. If there was, the quality of the video distorted it. You can even see the little blu ray disc icon in the XMB under “Game” before he launces it.

Wow how for behind is this guy, I have already found away to stream my entire ps3 game collection to my casio tv watch and play them with my human joystick !!! all you need is one of those tv transponders and a 130Gig HDD insert disc and select transfer to HDD under settings… this was in firmware 3.0 !!

Since it’s still locked down there can’t be any possibilities of homebrew just yet. Although, I’ve personally have been able to get Linux / Wine to run some cool Windows apps like Quake 2,3 and ET. I stopped to care about hacking PS3 now. I’ve made my mind and it doesn’t bother to buy games. Anyway, I just buy like 6 a year or so.
What we need is more title or the PSN Store (real titles like Burnout Out, GT5, …). I don’t want to get off my couch anymore. I’m ready to pay for this ! Maybe a way to put them on a external 1TB drive would be great. Or at least just backup them and you could restore…

He does say you need two hard drives. Maybe there is a way to mount two drives to the PS3’s internal port. Tricking the system into thinking the second drive is a blueray/dvd drive. Even if you could somehow bypass the blueray drive with a hard drive would be great. not that i want to rip my ps3 apart.

I have kids and no matter how high I put something out of reach, they inevitibly will try to reach it. This way, I can back it up to the HDD, store it in a closet or something and play to my hearts content, all without worrying about my son trying to use the discs as frisbee’s.
