As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

Update: It’s out, in-game XMB. Get it now via System Update.
Slated for a July 2nd release date is the long awaited PS3 firmware 2.40. So for the next 3 days enjoy watching Eric Lempel over and over again while he showcases the upcoming firmware in all its glory.

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.
The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update…

Is it listed as one of them…. No. The games that are out and will come out soon won’t have trophies until they are patched. Future games that still have time to have things added before they’re finalized will support them. Obviously. This shit doesn’t happen over night.
The real q is if the older PS3 games will get patched or not. I’m sure all the big name games like MGS4, Assassin’s Creed, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty 4, and GTA 4 will get patched. People will be pissed if they dont. But what about the lil games nobody will remember like Armored Core 4, Lego whatever, Def Jam Icon, Karoke Reveltion, The simpsons game. Who knows if those will get patched espeically if there were from 3rd party producers. Hell if I bought the game in a week just trying 2 milk some trophies it would kinda suck if it was patched rite?

Despite the similarities in the XMB and appearance, the PS3 is no PlayStation portable. The PS3 will be hacked in time like all other systems. This would probley be the most useful out of all ‘non illegal game running’ consoles due to the emense power of the Broadband Cell engine. If it were to happen soon, I’d love to turn it into a computer that could easily smoke any sub $3000 machine on the market, provided ram could be added. It wouldnt need a graphics card, lol, thats for sure.

I would figure if you’ve got a trophy to kill 100 units it could pull this from your save file, or are the requirements for the trophies going to start with the launch of the update?

jc, I have both an xbox 360 and a PS3 and i prefer the PS3, but that is a matter of opinion. Yes the trophy system is copied from the achievement system, but that is the only thing copied. Because of course they were going to put the ability to talk to friends while playing games, any company would have put that in because its such a basic idea. It is not an idea that can be copied from the xbox 360 because they hardly came up with the idea of talking to friends while playing games. PC games are where the chatting idea comes from!
