As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

Slated for a July 2nd release date is the long awaited PS3 firmware 2.40. So for the next 3 days enjoy watching Eric Lempel over and over again while he showcases the upcoming firmware in all its glory.

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.
The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update…

The real q is if the older PS3 games will get patched or not. I’m sure all the big name games like MGS4, Assassin’s Creed, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty 4, and GTA 4 will get patched. Despite the similarities in the XMB and appearance, the PS3 is no PlayStation portable. The PS3 will be hacked in time like all other systems. This would probley be the most useful out of all ‘non illegal game running’ consoles due to the emense power of the Broadband Cell engine. If it were to happen soon, I’d love to turn it into a computer that could easily smoke any sub $3000 machine on the market, provided ram could be added. It wouldnt need a graphics card, lol, thats for sure.

jc, I have both an xbox 360 and a PS3 and i prefer the PS3, but that is a matter of opinion. Yes the trophy system is copied from the achievement system, but that is the only thing copied. Because of course they were going to put the ability to talk to friends while playing games, any company would have put that in because its such a basic idea. It is not an idea that can be copied from the xbox 360 because they hardly came up with the idea of talking to friends while playing games. PC games are where the chatting idea comes from!

I keep getting signed out automatically, which never happened before the update… I have a 30mb connection and it is very stable… Also other people in my friends list are experiencing the same issue… They better patch this asap.

I don’t know if anyone else experiences this, but I have these problems (after, and as a result of the update 2.40):
- Random sign outs of PSN
- Alot of time taken to load friends list on start-up
- Alot of time taken to load friends profiles/trophies
- (and maybe many more which I have not seen yet).
Please provide feedback to whether you experience these problems also. Thank you.

The PLAYSTATION 3 system software version 2.40 has been temporarily taken offline and will not be available for download as our engineers examine any possible issues with this update. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details.
It seems as if a rash of reported issues with the recently released PS3 firmware 2.40 update has subsequently led Sony to pull the firmware from its Network Update servers. PS3 owners not on the latest firmware are now asked to simply download the previously released 2.36 update.
The issues have not been isolated incidents, as a number of PS3 owners over at the official Sony forums were greeted with an icon-less XMB screen after installing the 2.4 update, even after completely turning off and rebooting their console. The fix? Format the PS3’s hard disk drive, which obviously isn’t a very convenient workaround.
Sony has not issued a statement yet in regards to why the firmware was pulled. I’ll update when (or if) they do.

i have no problems with 2.40, when i got home i tired to update but my ps3 could not detect any new firmware. so i surfed to ps3news.com then downloaded the firmware there.. and there was no problems after that. i alredy have 6 trophies! whuhuhu!

It’s too bad that the firmware are bricking the PS3s, but it seems that most people with 40GB systems are uneffected. Let’s try to see what the problem might be. We already know that if you reformat the PS3 hard drive using the PC or another PS3, you can format it to 2.36. Now, some people’s PS3s are bricking. Let me ask you guys a question, I might be off, but when you updated and it bricked, Did you have a blu-ray disc in the drive and do you have your settings on Auto-start to off?
Ichigo, there were so little cases of this. I for one have a 40gb, I am unaffected, I had a Blu-ray disc in (Rockband to be exact) and I have auto start off. (I would guess most people do.)

Sithed, you make a good point. It’s just weird how most of the problems are happening on the Launch 60 GB PS3 consoles. I updated using this site, and the update works like a charm and I also have a 40GB. If the disc isn’t the problem, then there has to be something to do either with the internet connection or the users’ PS3 itself depending on what is on the hard drive. I have seen many people update, and I haven’t heard problems with the 40GB and not to much with the 80GB , but mostly the 60GB. From a comment made by PS3 Man, it’s obvious that the firmware is not completely stable for the systems the firmware works on. It also is affecting his internet connection. Either that, or his internet connection isn’t very good, ha-ha. I think the problem is simply that the updates are too much, and the server couldn’t handle it so some consoles are bricking, because updating it from this site hasn’t caused too much problems, from what I hear. Just my two cents.

My 60GB launch model is fine, I had no problems updating. I have MGS4 in the drive all the time, but auto start set to off.

all the cases ive heard the ps3 bricked right after installation or the users have network problems with psn and the friends list runs very slow but that also happened with 2.30 and the new ps store. thats all ive heard so far
Ive ALWAYS had network problems, since Firmware 1.0. Fucking Error code 8002AD23 pops up ALL the time.
Check your NAT, Ports used and firewall.
also you Metric #.
NAT should be 2-1, open ports that are listed at the ps site and metric less then 25 units, also try turning off firewall for simple fix on router.
I have done practically everything to fix this problem. My NAT type doesn’t matter at all, since it does this on all NAT types 1-3. I opened all the ports that have been listed on the sites when I searched google for how to change NAT type. I turned on the DMZ (which I hate using because of security). Turned off remote play and media sharing. Turned off the firewall on both the router and the PS3 option for it (but this has been a problem since before that became an option). AND even after all that, I still get this error occur.
However, I have no idea what a Metric # is. Is it a setting on my router that I can adjust? If so, please let me know how to access it. I have a Linksys WRT54G router.
I was also told that it might have something to do with a timeout setting on the router, but I have no idea where this is located.
Yeah… you actually should just have to update the router’s firmware. I had the same problems with my PS3 until I updated the router firmware, now it works perfectly.
Did you just update using a Linksys firmware, or one of the custom firmwares I have seen floating around the Interwebs? I just want to be clear on what to do, as this has seemingly been a common error message for many people, and most peoples response has been to disable media sharing. If this has been a problem since 1.0 firmware, why the hell should that 1 setting matter?
Just thinking, did those with problems download the update using the PS3 or download using PC?
I think the problem really lies in the networking. Let’s just pray that Sony fixed the consoles that broke with the firmware. I think updating through PC is safer, at least, that’s how I did it.
i downloaded through my ps3 on my 60 gig launch console and no problems so far my friends list is slow to start up but that happened about 5 updates ago ingame xmb is slow whilst in game but not really bothered tbh plus no in game music but who gives a fuck about music whilst i kill people on cod4 not meeeeee if i wanted music whilst i play i would shove the headphones in my ears at the end of the day ps3 is really still in the early stages so we should expect a few problems even if my ps3 was bricked like fort knox it would still be more use to than a crappy shitbox 360
the best thing about the shitbox 360 is the way it bounces of the floor when thrown should be called bouncybox 360
kinda sad all this processing power and it complains that i can’t even open an image whilst in a game =/…. also some games wont even allow music in the bg?! other than that all gd on 60gb launch =D just the xb menu is abit slow when gameing….feels dodgey but improves user access 100% though xD bout time!!

i would have put in 512MB for games alone, 256MB for the graphics card(even though i dont see why they need so much, they couldve just stick with 128) and 128MB for the XMB. that way we could listen music look at pics and maybe even videos. just my 2 cents

my ps3 its working fine, i downloaded the update from here and have mg4 in drive auto star off
I updated my My JAP 60gig launch model to 2.4, everything works fine untill…. If I leave the ps3 on the xmb after I turn it on, after about two mins it will crash…. I can still put a disc in and take it out but it wont do anything. The controller is dead to I have to turn the power off at the back of the console as the power sensor is dead as well. The in game xmb is a lill slower than the boot up xmb but to be honest it is pointless as you can’t do anything at the moment just send and recieve messages so I hope sony will improve this feature.
I can now no longer play dvd’s as I now get the message the region cone is not the same which I did not get untill this 2.4 update.
I wish they would add some more security in places that really matter like maybe a password at boot up so you can log in to your account as anyone can just turn it on and access your stuff.

I could send it back but as it’s an imported model they will not deal with me, but I am just saying the problem I have had either their may be another person on here of it may just be a model type which has problems, other than that the ps3 runs like a dream. You could format your HD on your computer, or use a friend’s PS3. Although all your videos and music will be gone, you can get the demos and stuff back through PSN.

PS3 #1 is right u know. a brisk drive around houston has shown me that a number of people have been using hacked or modded PS3s. My friend has a friend with 1 and showed me the games he could play off his hdd. Had a homebrew program on it that was pretty much just a calendar/organizer. Says he bought his from a dude he found who, of course, gouged the shit outta it n sold it 4 950 bucks. others say they found other more descreet sites that could so u. (I call bull on that tho I’ve been searching 4 months) And Finally my supervisor who works in IT hacked his (tho his PS3 will never look the same) He refuses to tell me how tho thus I still have no hacked ps3….. :(

I hate this 2.40 firmware! I ran the update 2 hours after it was released and turned my machine off….then a day later i went to play an Audio CD (since my PS3 is on my sound system) and it didn’t read my disc! Then, I tried putting Grand Theft Auto 4 in, it didn’t read it! So, out of hope, I rebooted the system, it booted GTA 4! But when I quit the game and went back to XMB, I took it out and put the Audio CD back in, still didn’t read it! I put GTA 4 back in, it wouldn’t read it. After a couple more tests, I came to the conclusion that my PS3 now only reads Blu-Ray discs and in order to play another game, i have to reboot my machine! Such bullshit! I don’t use my PS3 much at all, but when I do use it, i expect it to work….i’ve probably played the machine 20 times since Christmas 2007….It’s never given me ANY problems except with firmware 2.40….

I was wondering if the reason why some of us are having a few problems no mtter how big os small, if it had anything to do with previous firmware updates? Like me someof us may have missed or not bothered with an update or two. I missed a single update a while back, it may have something to do with that when they release a firmware update it pnly updates parts of the whole operating system, so…. those of us that missed an update or two may have parts of the older operating system, henms some promlems. Sony say they had no problems as they of course have all the updates, Maybe if they re released the whole operating system on a free dvd or something that would reinstall the whole operating system? I think as a downloadable update it would be to much. But if you think about it each update isnt that big for a complete operating system? Have a think about it and add your comments below :)
I did miss the 2.36 update, i had 2.35 and went to 2.40…..i rarely play my PS3, so that’s why i say the firmware update is the problem, i havn’t worn out the BD-ROM drive or nothing……
that could be it cause i first got my ps3 with 1.92 updated to 2.30 when i updated to 2.35 and played some music for about an hour i out in COD4 and the ps3 wasnt reading anything CDs, DVDs, BLU RAYs, or games. so that makes alot of sense

Of course if it didnt have the previous ones in it than if some 1 who had theres since 2007 but finally got 2 internet 2day updated he would be missing shitz loads. but since thats not the case I would have to assume if u updated u have ALL previous updates

I did not know about the 2.36 i never had the update message and every time I went to update it said you have the lates….. so I too went straight to 2.4 so this must be the prob…. It works great for me but it will crash on the xmb if I leave it more that two mins… the screensaver doesnt kick in it crashe.
