Well, well… Looks like Sony is on a firmware frenzy… After announcing the upcoming release of PSP firmware 4.00, which may I add seems somewhat lacking. Eric Lempel has dropped more news concerning PS3 firmware 2.36 and 2.40.
While firmware 2.36 improves system stability like every other minor update; it’s said 2.40 will follow with the much-anticipated features we’ve been waiting for — namely in-game XMB access and “trophies.” I’m guessing trophies will behave similar to Xbox 360 achievements.
I can only hope my shelf shines with GTA IV trophies now that I’ve tied up all the loose ends.

your fault for buying the damn thing in the first place. a few seconds worth of reasearch brings up that painful fact, that the 40gb models have no bc for ps2 games what so ever. granted, i take it you already knew this when you bought it, but either way you have little to no right to complain.
granted though, sony has dropped the ball. after all, with a combined cost of a whopping $27 to include the ps2s cpu and gpu what excuse did sony have to drop the combo from the system in the first place? i mean hell, the cpu only costs about $8 or something, so why remove that from the 80gb.
because it causes more heat, it costs more (even if it’s just a little), and seriously, how many of you would sit there playing PS2 games? cmon, if you really wanted to play out-dated games, why did you buy the PS3 to begin with?

Yeah, but at least M$ stated there would be backward compatibility on a title by title basis, and that the HALO series was their top priority. Well, SONY made a general backward compatibility statement that lead everyone to believe 100%.
XBox 360 BackComp sucks only because of lack of title support, not for unstable execution, a promise of 100% compatibility.
Wonder what would happen if they would allow Splinter Cell to execute, then use the Linux save, that would be interesting.

I still have constant problems with it.
Mainly if I install a new demo/game, the codec messes up with one channel of sound and it makes that channel hella dull. (mainly the codec that carries some in game dialogue)
Called and asked Sony but the guy was like what? What’s a codec? So you have no sound? Wait lemme ask our tech guy…

sometimes it’s the game, not the console. just like certain games don’t output in full 1080i. Sony can’t make every game output in full settings, it’s up to the developers and their own game updates to fix that.

That particular layer of sound is corroded.
I eventually just switched off Optical and am using HDMI.

PS3 version 2.36 is to create stability for the new up coming 2.40. Update files cannot exceed a certain size. 2.40 is big file with nice new addition to the xmb. unless they experience any problems the next update will be 2.40 but it will be a few weeks. Sony knows they are losing there fan base so they are working will hard to make the ps3 to utilize it full potential.
Optical works fine if you have state of the art. mine i dont have problems chance it your ps3 system or cable or even you sound system. I have no problem

in-game XMB it is a big change, and to make sure it doesn’t messed up they made 2.36 to stabalize it OK!!! So don’t curse out Sony, their being smart…

2.36 today (WED) 2.40 tomorrow (THUR)? They usually update on Thursday so maybe it’s a two part two day update? Which doesn’t make sense because you can skip updates (not update today but wait till 2.40 comes out they don’t make up update to every firmware in between)

I have problems playing demo’s with DTS sound only. I am using a Bose system. It seems every demo I download that uses DTS, the sound is crappy at times. Even on my Sharp 1 bit digital theater the sound sucks using DTS on just the demo’s.
Well Demos r usaully only prototypes of the game.
There have been Ps3 hacks like downgrading the PS3’s Firmware a longtime ago but to do it was pointless as well as the fact in order to do the hack you had to open the system.

Sony has announced that Fall should bring an open BETA of Home. It won’t go Gold for a while though.
Updated on my 20gig and now no BLURAY movies are recogninzed, games work fine but the 4 out of 4 movies are not working, I’m guessing I can’t be the only one, so perhaps we will see another update even before the big 4.0

i have initially purchased a box, i have returned it six times. I have taken care of it and have not missused it. i had the ring of death once, other times it chewed up my disk (gears of war (awsome game by the way)) other times i wouldnt come on. i have had three diferent versions of it over the six months span. i have finally goten rid of it and switched to ps3. i keep up with the system updates and i haven’t had 1 problem with my ps3. the box does have “better” games than ps3 however you can’t beat free online play, the ability to transfer saved game data, and the MASSIVE ps2 game collection. the only thing that is missing is the firmaware “hack” like on the psp system. that will be a landmark in the ps history. if you managed to read this far thanks.
