Just spotted this logging into the PlayStation Network — firmware update version 2.35. Downloading it now…
According to Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, the update is minor; it merely improves stability of some PS3 titles.

A new PlayStation 3 firmware is now available for download via Network Update. No, this update doesn’t bring any fancy features like in-game XMB. Firmware 2.35 simply improves the stability of certain PS3 titles, according to PSN director Eric Lempel.
The list of titles affected by the update went unnamed, but Lempel did note that it has nothing to due with the lock-up issues a number of PS3 owners are experiencing with Grand Theft Auto IV.

Just sign out your psn account when you play GTA IV. The reason for the lockup is that ps3 tries to connect during playing the game and if there is time out in connection than the game freezes.
Try it you’ll no longer see any freeze on the game.

The info has been updated, but before it included a transcript of someone who had an extensive talk with rockstar about the GTA freeze problem. It had to do with how newer/older ps3’s ran psx games which was interfering with gta. The fix was said to come in a patch, which is most likely 2.35
Man all i hear all over the net is how gta stutters and freezes in game or doesn’t load. my wife is playing it right now and i’ve put in about as much time as her and we’ve never had a single hiccup.

My PS3 Plays GTA IV fine.
I finished the game without a single freeze.
I have a NTSC launch version PS3 60g, and cannot get more than 10 mins of game play in before it freeze’s…. SO frustrating

I hav a 40 gig ps3 and the game freezed on me once!! I’ve been playin non stop until now and i didnt get anymore freezings
it freezes every now and then but nothing that would drive me too crazy. just make sure the auto save is on.

GTA IV’s update isn’t included in 2.35 system update, more than likely, because last time I put in my GTA IV disc, it prompted me to update my game title, which was a small download. So, basically it has a patch of its own.

To be honest all the updates to the ps3 haven’t really affected me to much and ‘ve had it since launch. Yeah there are some cool things that i may use in the future but nothing outstanding. The ps3 is great I’m definately not complaining so I say just wait and see what will come out. There is no point complaining about something unless its broke so deal with it. You guys new some things weren’t on the ps3 and still bought it so i don’t see why there are some many people on this site complaining. In game xmb will be great but since its in high demand it must be hard to do otherwise they would have had it out in a heart beat. anyway just my 2 cents.

I got this new update but now I can’t play motorstoem! It doesn’t crash but the controllers do they just die and I cant do anything except turn the ps3 off. The game still runs but I can’t even press the ps button the controllers just flash as if they are searching for the ps3! Anyone else got this problem?
Yes, I have had this problem on the last firmware. The controller will turn itself off and not turn back on sometimes too. Plugging it into the PS3 with a cable seems to fix this problem though.
At last I thought I was the only one. Thanks I will try the controller with the cable I did not try that.
According to Dutch website there is a simple solution. Unplug your internet cable for PS3 and you should have no more freezes. Haven’t confirmed it myself, cause I have no freezing, even while connected to the internet.

OMG My PS3 crashed after this update…it wont read any BD disk anymore….and i received the error code of 80010514…which is the code of death for ps3…..even sony dont know how to fix this..Now i have to exchange a new one…

after this update my ps3 HDMI doesnt work!!!!!!!! had to change the ps3 and now HDMI works!!! beware of this update!! it seems is killing the ps3!!
oh and b4 u ask if i did the 5 seconds power buton held reset yea i did it but still no hdmi signal. never had problem with the ps3 till i upgrade it 2 2.35
60gb launch model. no crashes. you can now download the haze demo…. 4 player co-op demo. pretty cool. now if only the game was good.

It seems to be working fine on my 60 GB Launch, it’s playing Spiderman 3 just fine, and Oblivion Works, GTA IV still has strange controller glitch, it’s like L2 is permanently pressed, the controller is fine no damage, but the game becomes unresponsive when you hold down the ps button… Using another controller helped this though…

well, the last update fixed my sound problem. Before this update, my receiver would only have 2 channel pcm audio in the xmb, which worked fine with the update before that. Display on my receiver even said that, and I could hear only 2 channels. Listening to my mp3 sucked as it was only 2 channel audio. After the update, the display on my receiver no longer says 2 channel pcm, but just pcm with all speakers now working.
At least I know something was fixed.
