GTA IV Freezing :(

Posted by greg on April 29, 2008

I got home ~ 1 am last night with a copy of GTA IV to realize my PS3 freezes near the end or immediately after the opening cut scene. Now — just now — after a little research I’ve learned I’m not the only one; however, most report the 60GB launch models are the problem. Mine is a 20GB launch model with the same issue.

Reportedly Rockstar has issued a simple [temporary?] fix: delete the game install data, any game saves (if you made it that far), and then start over. I’ve yet to confirm until I get home later this evening. Update: this doesn’t fix the problem on my 20GB PS3; still locks up.

Fortunately for me, my backup 40GB console works fine. Unfortunate for you, because online in the GTA universe — yous gonna get jacked, son.

Well I think I have the worst problem with GTA 4. I got home at 1:25AM on the 29th updated my PS3 from 2.10 FW to 2.17 FW that came with GTA 4 then played for about 45-60 minutes then went to sleep. Then in the morning I put in GTA 4 in my PS3 went to the bathroom came out expecting for GTA 4 to be loaded up but NO. I went to start it my self but the Game didnt show up in the XMB I ejected the game then inserted it again an nothing. Now my PS3 thats not even a month old wont read ANY DISCS WHAT SO EVER! I called Sony an they said to update to 2.30 I did an still nothing. Then they told me that the GTA 4 2.17 FW was most likely the culperate for it not reading any discs. So now I have to wait to send it to them an see if they can fix it then wait even more to get it back. So basically GTA 4 broke my PS3… Dang! Now anit that sh!t?

y not just upgrade 2 2.30 and see if that fixes it?

Comment by Chris2Ace
2008-05-01 00:04:22

I did upgrade to 2.30 FW “MC Cullah”.

Plus I just got done emailing RockStar about this. So I dont know what there going to do because a total recall of every GTA4 Game is going to be heck-tick if they do. Because I dought they can fix this with some type of downloadable update because the problem is still on the GTA4 Game Disc. But I’ll let “Greg” an every one know what Rock Star tells me.

An as for my PS3 its still not reading sh!t!!! Because of GTA4’s 2.17 FW!!!

I have to wait 2-4 Days to send it to Sony then wait another 15-20 more days to hear if they fixed it, or just replaced my PS3. So no GTA4 till like May 20th. Plus I hope its not my Copy of GTA4 that will keep messing up every PS3 I put it in to. Cus if it is sh!t RockStar is going to here about this.

Damn man i hope you get ur ps3 sooner. I thought having my exams would be really crap, due to me not buying gta IV as i would not get any revise done at all. Im waiting for 2 weeks to get a copy, hopefully all these errors are fixed by then.

Sounds like your bluray laser burned out. Happened to me, too. 2 weeks without PS3. In addition to doing a full backup, remember to save your PS1/PS2 memory cards (those didn’t get backed up when I did mine so I lost everything).

my 40 gb randomly freezes sometimes.
also. how do u smoke weed

Comment by Hmm
2008-04-30 10:42:37

Step One: Preparation
Unlike tobacco, marijuana can require a bit of simple pre-thought to truly enjoy. There’s a few things that you should at least consider, before you begin your toke.

Drinks – This is one of the few things I’d almost absolutely reccomend procuring before you start smoking. Very, very few people can use marijuana without experiencing the phenomenon known as drymouth, which pretty much explains itself. Always unpleasant, so have something around (preferably water in a squeeze bottle, as it’s near-impossible to spill such a thing, and you want to keep this in mind due to a likely degradation of coordination while high).

Food – Pairs nicely with the former, but isn’t always required. A good portion of people get “the munchies” however, and you’ll find that things do indeed taste quite nice when you’re high.

Music – Another non-essential, music can also enhance a good toking. Just about anything you enjoy will do, although many people swear by Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon (not reccomended for the nervous, as the album can be quite creepy to novice smokers while high).

Friends – This is another factor that I’d highly reccomend. Toking up alone can often make one feel like a diseased druggie outcast, especially in the beginning. Besides that, marijuana lends itself extremely well as a social activity.

A Smoking Area – While this may seem logically obvious, I feel the need to go into detail. A well-ventilated area (or being outside) is going to reduce the semi-unpleasant smell left after your toke is done. However, lack of ventilation and small quarters will allow the smoke to build and recirculate through your lungs as you breathe naturally, increasing your high to the point where you can use less weed. Also, a comfortable setting is key to enjoyment.

A Smoking Implement – This will be covered below with methods. The important part is that you need something to effectively ingest the THC.

A Lighting Implement – Usually matches or a lighter. A lighter’s easier to use, even while stoned, but it usually involves tilting it at wierd angles to light a bowl, which can burn your fingers. I prefer matches, though those who don’t trust their coordination while high may want to stick with the lighter.

A Positive Attitude – Smoking up is not something you want to do when life’s at it’s low points. Escapism with drugs is bad, period, and it doesn’t really work with Mary Jane. You smoke up while miserable, you’re just going to end up high and miserable. Trust me on this one, I’ve seen it happen.

Step Two: Choosing your Smoking Method
This is probably going to be the biggest choice in your initial process of getting high. Marijuana can be used in a variety of ways…here’s the more popular methods.

Joints – For those not in the know, a joint is merely marijuana wrapped and rolled in cigarette papers. Suprisingly, this is one of the more popular methods of marijuana consumption by novices. Why suprising? First, it’s difficult to roll a joint decently. Second, it’s one of the most innefficient ways of smoking. I kid you not when I tell you you can usually use half the amount of weed you roll into a joint in a pipe or bong for getting one person high. Joints, however, are extremely portable, and a well-rolled one is easy to use and pass, making it popular for fairly large parties, chock full of novice users.

Pipes – Pipes are simple devices by nature. Generally, they involve a tube-like shape that curves upwards at one end. Marijuana is placed into one end (called the bowl), lit, and then the smoke is sucked through a small hole in the bottom of the bowl, through the chamber and into your mouth at the other end. Pipes are sold in a variety of sizes, usually made of glass, and a crude one can be made in a pinch with nothing more than tinfoil, though this is a bad idea due to the threat of alzheimer’s. Much easier to build, and usually less fragile than a bong, but lacks some of the nicer effects, such as cooling.

Bongs – Also known as water pipes, the most basic of these contraptions are basically an advanced pipe. However, as the smoke is pulled through the bong, it goes through a sizeable amount of water. First off, as long as the water’s cool, this has a nice effect on the tempature of the otherwise-hot smoke, making it very lung-friendly to novice smokers. Also, it takes out a portion of random icky things from the smoke, making the hit a tad bit cleaner and smoother. Once again, bongs can be bought or made, but either way they’re usually fairly sizeable, and fragile.

There’s also other ways of ingesting THC from marijuana, like baking and eating (the THC can be heated and extracted into a butter, for example), but this requires a sizeable amount of decent weed for any noticeable effect. There are also vaporizers, but I haven’t had the privledge of using one, so I can’t comment. Finally, there are blunts, cigars that have been hollowed out and filled with marijuana, but I’m not going to discuss them here, and my semi-rant on why I don’t smoke them and despise them is for another node.

Step 3: Smoking
Alright, first, ensure your marijuana is free of any major stems or seeds. You also want it broken up (either use scissors or just pry and break) into a decent consistency (this matters more with joints than pipes or bongs), not even close to powder but not huge chunks either. From here, it all depends on how you’re smoking.

Smoking A Joint – I’ll be honest, I can’t roll a good joint to save my life. I advise novices to go with a pipe or bong if they can, but if you absolutely must roll a J, ink-’s write-up on how to roll a joint will get you going. It’s very much something you have to practice, though.

Once you have your joint rolled and ready, there should be a semi-open end and a tapered or closed end. Light the tapered/closed end, suck through the semi-open end. Smoke should fill your mouth. Inhale slowly and carefully, wait at least 3 seconds, then exhale slowly. If smoking with friends, pass to the left and let the joint circle around. Don’t be suprised when you don’t immediately feel the effects, It usually takes 2 good hits and 10 minutes after that before the THC kicks in for new users.

Smoking From A Pipe – First, if you have one available, put a pipe screen in the bottom of the bowl. This ensures that nothing but smoke manages to get sucked through the hole. A small hole in the bottom of your bowl, and being careful can usually keep ash out of your mouth, but this is the easier way, and you can buy a 5-pack of pipe screens at any smoking shop dirt cheap (under $1). You may have to trim one to fit your bowl, do so with a scissor. Next, pack the bowl. This is a short way of saying “put pinches of weed into the bowl, press down gently, repeat until bowl is near-full”. Don’t pack down too hard, as smoke needs gaps to reach the bottom of the bowl and go through the hole.

Once packed, simultaneously light a flame at the top of the bowl (leave the flame there for a second or two, at least), and inhale through the mouthpiece. This will cause the flame to descend into the bowl and light the marijuana. Also, there may be a small hole near the bowl. This is called a carb, or carburateor. Cover it while lighting and inhaling. Remove the flame, then remove your finger from the hole and finish inhaling (this allows the remaining smoke out of the chamber while simultaneously letting the unused MJ in the bowl stop burning). Inhale, wait at least 3 seconds, exhale, pass to the left if in good company. Once again, it usually takes 2 hits, and 10 minutes after the second one before you start feeling the effects.

Smoking From A Bong – First, ensure the bong water is cool and relatively clean, changing it if nessecary. Then, pack the bowl (as detailed in the pipe smoking section). Put your finger on the carb, light the flame at the top of the bowl, and inhale. Remove the flame, remove finger from hole, continue inhaling until the chamber is clear. Wait at least 3 seconds, exhale, pass to the left if need be. Once again, 2 good hits and 10 minutes before you’ll start feeling effects.

Really, that’s all there is to it. Here’s a few general tips from myself.

- If you feel like you can’t hold a hit any longer, you probably can’t. Let it out, otherwise, you’ll wind up coughing like heck. Same thing with taking a hit…if you feel like you can’t or don’t need another, 99 times out of 100 you don’t.

- On the topic of hits, realize that, especially if you’re a novice, you’re probably not going to need much to get blasted, and as long as your tolerance stays low, things will stay that way. Every person has a point during a session where they will not get any “higher” than they are at that moment. Learn to recognize that plateau, because stopping there not only ensures that you don’t waste your precious stash, but also helps keep your tolerance low.

- If you’re not feeling the effects, make sure you’re inhaling deeply enough. Remember, once the smoke’s in your mouth, you need to breathe in further to allow it into your lungs. Also, ensure you hold your hit for at least a short period of time (the aforementioned 3 seconds has worked well for this author). And as always, it takes time. You’re not going to be out in the cosmos the second the smoke from your first hit leaves your mouth. Time is needed.

- Finally, smoke responsibly and in moderation. No, marijuana isn’t physically addicting, but as with anything pleasurable, it’s psychologically addicting for those who decide they need to do it at least 5 days a week. Besides that, keeping your smoking to a minimum will ensure your highs don’t get stale, and your tolerance stays low. Remember this: Saying “Hey, let’s go smoke some weed!” is fine. Saying, “Man, I really need some weed right now.” is not. If you find yourself muttering the latter in desperate tones, or putting weed before important life situations (your job, schoolwork, etc.), reconsider your hobby.

Happy Toking!

Okay, i deleted all GTA IV related material off my harddrive, but FIRST, i backed up my game save and profile. I reinstalled the game and let it load up as normal. I exited out and copied my game save over to the harddrive…JUST the game save, didn’t copy the profile (i copied both just in case) and loaded it back up and it works again….so I guess that’s a work around from having to remove the entire game and start over

Then…

I just got done emailing RockStar about this.

The developers of the game did not test this out then as if it is happening on both leading consoles and arround the same point in the game they need to pull there fingers out their asses and do something, If it was a single console just say the 40gig ps3 model then yes I could understand as the diferent ps3 models have slightly diferent firmwares but on all models and on the 360?? Some one made a big bo bo somewhere along the line.

I stocked the original 40gbers and half of them stopped reading blurays, would still read dvds tho.

Go figure. Some had probs with their wifi chip too.

That’s why i waited for the next batch (that was coupled with gt5 prologue) and there have been no issues with any of those for us so far. Yeah it took a couple of months to get them in, but so far it was worth the wait, knock on wood.

It’s hardware related chris2ace, i doubt rockstar would bother replying. As far as the freezing etc goes, i gots no idea.

If i can kick my wife off gta i’ll be online in liberty tonight, peace out.

Update: Played for 6 hours today on my 60GB US model, (bought in November of 07), auto-save, save in tact.

Console updated via network update to latest.

Is it me or does it appear that we keep hearding about people updating the firmware on their systems via firmware on discs, and subsequent PS3 basically bricked into not being able to read any discs afterwards, a pattern perhaps?

Maybe everyone should just stick to updating their consoles any other way except via disc firmware updates. ( My 0.02 cents. )

I understand what your saying Ryo

“(kept in enclosed places where it overheats, dusty, etc) probably are the ones with the problems!”

Well I can tell you that I’m not one of those people. I clean my PS3 every day, an it has pleanty of room to breath.

I know you have seen those pictures of that PS3 that sony wouldny fix because of all its dust. An trust me mine is no were close to being dirty in any way. An that PS3 looked like they just coverd it in dirt then dung it out.

Now those are the Dumb ass people who dont take car of it in any way.

Plus I called Sony an they even said an I quote…

” It was most likely the 2.17FW from the GTA4 Game disc. Not to say that if you install it on another PS3 that it will happen every time but it can happen. ”

So I just got to wait an send them my PS3 an they said they would send me a New PS3 with the lates FW on it. So I advise people “not to install the 2.17 FW on there PS3″

You are just lucky if it hasn’t yet, Mine was fine to on my 60GB PS3 and then all of a sudden today it will not work at all, just freezes, Deleted the data, tried again, NOPE, deleted my save game, and Profile, worked, for about 10 mins, then FROZE on the Menu where The sound is, then tried it again, froze while going into a MISSION. What I don’t get is how can I play it from tuesday till now, then all of a sudden it stops working, what the HELL, is it like a SELF destruct or something, USE once and then it’s Garbage ?? I mean come on, GEt some real TESTERS in Rockstar and get some People that actually know what they are doing, they should have concentrated more on stuff like this. I’m really disappointed in them on this. I hope a update comes soon, and They better not Have the update for SALE, if they want a RIOT, they will not sell it, it better be a FREE update, and these soo called Map updates better come free to, just for this Trouble.

Same happened to me, was playing perfectly, then this morning it froze on the loading game area.. I wiped out the Game Data, all the saves, the profile, and cleaned up some HD space from the games I don’t use no more, thinking the HD might have a bad sector somewhere, reinstalled the game, and had to start from scratch, but it ran great for 2 1/2 hours, now here is the funny thing, my nephew has his own account on my PS3, his game had (zero) problems what so ever, for some reason my account didn’t work, so it had to be a corrupted file, or the HD has some bad sectors. Very odd.. and I remember when I quit the game I was playing prior to the crash, there was no HD activity what so ever (common habit) .. Only thing I changed was turn on the Six Axis for reloading prior to the crash, perhaps it screwed up the “profile” file.. ? Oh well..

Guys.. its to do with the high ammount of traffic with their internet servers…. The solution is to just turn off the internet connection from the settings menu in the XMB. then load the game and it should work…. but unfortunatly.. you cant go onlien.. but hey.. complete the game first.. then maybe by then, rockstar would have it sorted :D

Everyone, I think I found a solution to the freezing problem:

So far, I’ve had the GTA disc inside my PS3 a total of three times. During my first two sessions I ensured that, although I had the AutoSave feature turned on, I went to my Safehouse every time to make an actual save file.

However, on the third time I popped the disc in I decided to test the quality of the Autosave feature. This time I exited the game WITHOUT going to the safehouse to execute a “proper” save, merely relying on my quicksave file (a la Half-Life 2) to load up my game on a future occasion. This time to my chagrin, the game continually froze up after the initial loading screens.

After some tinkering, I discovered that deleting your most recent quicksave file from the hard drive, and then relying instead on your most recent “proper” safehouse save file works for me. I had to lose a few missions, but it was better than losing all 40% of my progress!

My theory is that anyone who has a crashing copy has to simply delete their most recent saves until they find one that works. Remember to restart your PS3 after every delete because the PS3 needs to re-establish the proper link to load your game.

Post a reply if this works and then we can work on getting the news to Rock Star :p

let the ps3 log to the internet first and then put the game. work for me most of the times.

heh, online eh? that’s funny cause my mate’s would flash the wan and not the hdd, so it does make sense, except we found that if you make a new profile, and start the game, even if it doesn’t load the game from an original start, exit out and copy the save game from the originalprofile to the new one, it works fine. ofcourse this only works if it loads in the first place.

For those who can’t start it all from scrath, try creating a new profile and playing it from that, you can still copy all your other save games over from the original to the new one, this worked for my friend. and don’t forget you can save your save games to a mem stick as well, always a good idea to back up profiles and save games.

Drunk as fuck and early hours lol, didn’t read the offline solutions, but old mate is online with the new profile and the save game copy works fine.

80GB PS3 here, i stated earlier that deleting the game and copying the game save to an external memory source and then copying it back over worked…well, it worked ONCE…I read elsewhere that disconnecting PSN worked, that method has worked 2 or 3 times now, YES you can play online still, just open your cellphone and go to Multi-player and it will ask for your sign-in info. No lock-ups from there. Disconnect from PSN before booting the game, it’s worked for me…HOPEFULLY soon RockStar will have a patch released or their servers updated. I’m sure it worked right away (launch day/night for me, anyway) b/c there was more people wanting to play the actual game than get online with it. I did play Multi-player one time and there is VERY high traffic on it already, so I do believe it’s got something to do with the internet connectivitiy…again, SIGN OUT OF PSN BEFORE LOADING GAME!!

Well in my point of view, this is just rivalry between Xbox360 Fanboys and Ps3 Fanboys. How could a Company that took like 4 years developing a game would have a problem like this.
If you search in others forums is always the same type e.g: i Went to bathroom and when i came back bla blak bla… .
If we count the persons that said Gta IV is freezing and the others that say it isnt we could conclude its like 1 Game “functionally” in 40 or more Frezzed Games.
I have a Ps3 such as my friends that have Xbox360 and they all bought GTA IV, like 15 people and we didnt have any problem, so STOP WITH THIS FAKE Bullshit story and rivalry between fanboys

I had a problem where GTA4 would get stuck at a loading screen (i.e. “Starting New Game”). The problem was finally solved after trying a 12-step (I think) guide Rockstar put out for fixing this. Eventually, I later narrowed the problem down to just having to sign out of the PSN before I play. It still freezes when I try to sign into the PSN in-game to get on multiplayer, but oh well… Hope that advice helps someone!

I guess no one checked my last post. YOU DON’T NEED TO DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET TO GET GTA IV TO UNFREEZE! Simply delete and quicksaves that you’ve been trying to load and then instead load up an actual Safehouse “proper” save with an actual file name. The reason your GTAIV keeps freezing is that through some bug, the game will not load from your quicksaves like in Half-Life 2. So remember that before quitting your game, go to the Safehouse and execute a proper save; DO NOT rely on your quicksaves that register after a mission is complete.

I REPEAT DO NOT DISABLE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION. It kinda defeats the purpose of online play right?

Comment by Anthony82

Well I even did a TEST, Started the game, with NO internet worked, Started the game with Internet FROZE, so therefore it was the internt, I say WAS, because something must have been fixed, because it worked today, and I also turned off the Quick-Save, so Today was a Good day, lets see if tomorrow, it Freezes again, it seems to like to work on days it chooses.

Like everyone says, start the game without internet. If that doesn’t work copy your savegames, profile and delete the gta gamedata (about 3,5mb)
After that change the screenres to standard resolution and start the game.
After you did these steps you can use your old savegames again.
It seems to be a cacheproblem, the system doesn’t clear the cache when the game exist. I got the problem on the 60gb version after I quit the game directly after I saved. The 360 has the same problem and there’s some other fix on the net to clear the cache. You have to google it though

Disable ( auto sign-in ) on your profile account on the PS3, and your problems are solved, it also appears to be a network problem, soon as u disable auto sign-in u can play GTA and still go online :), hope this helps!

If GTA4 is still freezing, a good option is to disable your internet connection and when/if the game starts up, get passed the “First Date” mission and you should be able to play perfectly fine, with the internet connection on. (!’m not sure if this was mentioned; i didn’t feel like reading all 100+ comments)

Okay, 60 gigger, original ps3, newest firmware.
Just turned auto save off and it’s working perfect.
Don’t listen to the other crap.
Just disable auto saves, delete yours if applicable.

Don’t listen to the Other CRAP ??? HAHA Yeah Umm Can you read ?? I did a damn Test by leaving the internet On then turned the game on and NO Game, FREEZE, Turn the internet off, and the game works, So how is that crap ?? It has something to do with Internet and Auto Game Saves, I mean as of right now, the game seems to be working with Net on still. SO therefore it’s not Crap, Did a Test to, Plugged the Ethernet in while the game loaded and soon as I plugged it in, BAM froze. BUt they must have fixed something on the server it connects to when it’s Online, because as I said it works now.

I had the same freezing issue, sometimes the game would just lock at the loading screen. I then read somewhere on the internet that disabling or signing out of the Playstation Network might fix the issue. I disabled automatic login to the Playstation network and everything started working again. I have been playing 8 hours freeze free.

Just to tell all you 20gig model guys and girls they did do a recall on them but never told the public if you call Sony they will send you a box to mail your ps3 back and they give you the 40gig. model with wifi, but i was scared to send my threw the mail i paid $1000.00 for mine and didnt want to get a brick back in the mail. But i still have my 20gig. I think it has somethiing with the Hard-Drive I went out and got a SATA Drive with 250gigs (make sure you get a 2.5inch NOTEBOOK Hard Drive) all you do is pop off the Hdd cover on the side and 1 blue Screw holds the HDD in and pull the little handel they give you and then swtich over the HDD Metal bracket to the new HDD (be careful SATA drives dont take drops very well and make sure you got no static electricity on you) and then slide the new drive back in the PS3 and but the blue screw back in to hold it in and turn it on and the PS3 will reformat it and everything 10 min. Install Max and the Ps3 took 236gigs and I went out and got the Intercooler for mine took it apart and were there are Stickers on the fan’s I removed them and pushed down lightly on the rod in there to free it up a bit and but like 2 drops of HOUSE HOLD OIL and spun the fan by hand a few times then put Electrical tape over the hole (so the oil dont come out) There are alot of screws in the Intercooler so I would say 1 Hour repair time Max and the fans are sooooooo!!!! much quite even with the fans on max. Sry for this to be a long 1 but I wanted to give you all a tip or 2 so good luck out there and look me up on PS3 Crash335

I use a ps3 60gb , in the uk , i installed 2.17 update from psn , because it came out before i brought the game , but it worked fine for me , the reason online was down on ps3 because psn is free , so psn dont pay for servers , rockstar have to sort out the servers there selfs, but on xbox because its paid for , mircosoft pay and make the servers for them , , but psn is generlly better. i have neverhad a prob with my ps3 or gta iv , the only probems on my ps3 was that i reformatted (cleared the hard disk , delated every single file) because of a virus from downloading porn lol, a thing not to do , sony sud make a anti-virus for the ps3 , den we can download as much porn with no virus , yay!!! i have the lastest frimware to date on my ps3 because it pops up that it needs updateing wen its out , but lately i notied that it didnt pop up saying , it just let me sign in , the only way i no is coz my mate asked me wat the new update did , so i cheak the software update once a mth , but the game updates still pop up i think , thanks for reading , alex ,england
