Dragula96 claims to have discovered a successful method to launch homebrew on PS3 firmware 2.20. And, of course, the source code or method is yet to be publicized; apparently that will be available once further testing is completed.

actually, you dont need a 2.5″, i saw an adaptor called HD extender or something like that which allows you to externally connect a 3.5″.

Average Blu ray dvd is 20 Gb still huge tho. normal dvds about 2 gb. I dont know about the games tho. I know the psp games r like 10.
you dont know shit, single layer blu-ray disc is 25gb (base 2), ps3 uses dual layer blu-ray discs which hold 50gb (base 2). average dvd holds 4.7gh (again, base 2) and a psp disc holds 900mb for a single layer disc and 1.8gb for a dual layer disc.
also, largest commerically available 2.5″ sata hard drive is 320gb. several companies have just gotten the storage capacity per platter in a hard drive to 334gb per platter, a laptop hard drive only has space for one platter, no more, so the most you are going to see at this time is 334gb (unless your using a solid state drive, in which case id ask you which major organs you sold to get the few thousand dollars to pay for the bloody thing).

last i checked that wasant scheduled for release until late this year. not only that, but its probably going to end up costing an arm and a leg when it hits, would probably be cheaper to get a converter and put in a 1tb drive.
on the plus side though, 500gb per platter means a 2tb desktop drive is most likely in the works.

I don’t know, when I quit a game back to the XMB my screen flashes. It’s basicly recreating the graphics device and loading all the XMB resources again as games would have there own device.

If real of course, the next thing would be writting something useful for the PS3. What is needed to run unsigned code and Playstation Network access and all the other details involved in playing on the PSN network and day to day stuff.
Opening the machine to homebrew = good

Just my opinion, The thing is that its the anti piracy which is where most of the security is put, so to get homebrew you usually have to get at a part of the system that allows backed up games to run. (by this I mean the hack to allow homebrew will also enable a coder to write code that disable copy protection).
Sony if they had any sense would realise that the Ps3 will be opened within 6 months from now as real progress is being made.
They should make a new update which opens the RSX and hopefull everyone would get decent homebrew via linux and not need to try and hack GameOs
There would have to be some pretty badass pirates to pirate a Blu-ray disk. As new games come out (Metal Gear Solid 4) that use more and more space (50gb) it’s going to scare the pirates away. I wouldn’t want to spend time D/l a 50gb file, even if there are like 4 million seeds and I connected to every one of them (seem suspicious to my ISP) my internet, at 1.5mb would slow me down. I don’t want to do the math but it’d take a long time even at MAX speed.
they have blank bluray discs, and i think the hard drive would come in useful for the ps2 games
i can download 50 gb easy in one night but the games are not that big, the most games will fit on a dual layer disk you dont want the exra’s anyway i think(making of and music and so on.

To be honest, I feel there really isn’t too much worth ripping off for the ps3… although I’m more of a homebrew fanatic than anything, so I don’t appreciate the current games as much as an average gamer. I just want to be able to play my psx backups and old school system emulators. Even better, Plug psp into ps3 > play Chrono Cross on ps3 > save > start up Chrono C. on psp > Continue. I see real potential in that respect.

No! the 60gig has a chip inside simalar to a ps2 chip which well run ps2 games, the 80gig has ps2 emulation software, if the emulation got hacked like psp ps1 emulation in the flash then maybe one day the 40gig could run ps2 from emulation
no it wont. us/jap 60gg,20gb have the ps2 cpu and gpu. all other 60 gb’s and 80 gb’s are mising the ps2 cpu and it emulated. the 40gb’s jus dont ether of these chips. so unless we get a really good coder that can emulate the ps2 gpu (sony choose the cpu to emulate cause it was “easier” then mb we can have a ps2 emulator running. i love my canadian launch 60GB

Isn’t the question more, what is it these mods are suppose allow you to do in Unreal Tournament? If he’s made it so that this has done something that wasn’t supposed to be allowed then the question becomes how much room and how much can you code into that mod to get more advantages or exploits running on the system.
An ideal idea would be to attempt to get more rights or access to the ps3’s OS or it’s internals, providing more insight or something.

Almost a year and a half with no good hacks or homebrew. I’m sure when its done it will be awesome. The PS3 should be powerfull enough to emulate atari to xbox with no probs ;) but if sony comes out with another console (PS4) before the ps3 is hacked that will be sad.

good news everybody. Today i called sony and i was told that the 80Gb ps3 is 100% compatible with ps1 and ps2 games. I dont know why people are saying its not fully compatible as the 60Gb ps3 but in any case it is.
80GB emulates the games… 60GB has the chip that actually plays the games… emulation is prone to bugs/glitches so 80gb will have more bugs/glitches than the 60gb… 60gb = way more convenient
I have played over 30 ps2 games on my 80 gig, not a single problem yet, I am still waiting for proof of the reason people say it is inferior…the build of it is actually superior, the fan goes into full speed less often since it has better cooling, other than ps2’s processor, it is a higher quality unit
