Sony has released PS3 firmware version 2.17. You may grab that now via System Update, or wait a bit; we’ll have a copy posted for download shortly. I’ve updated my console, and as far as I can tell, there are no obvious or visible changes. Lets wait to hear the official word from Sony.

It’s not PSP though. There is no CFW. The only exploits that have worked are useless. I’m sticking with Sony. I’ve had some issues with my PS3 connected to my new router and if this solves the problems then I am thankful for the update. If not, oh well.

honestly wats the point of hacking the ps3, what homebrew can you get on it, its impossible to transfer files from comp to ps3(from wat i know of) and you cant get no iso’s. if your guna spend 50 bucks an a blueray disk just to copy the files from on ps3 game to the blank cd then u might as well buy the game. from my point i see no use in hacking the ps3. psp was better to hack becuase you can get isos, homebrew change the themes and everything. ps3 is hard to do that.

wow, you serious? have u not see the card slots provided in the front alog with usb ports? you can run updates from a card, especially if you have a psp because they card is universal between them.
transferring files impossible?? even through the xmb you can transfer video & audio, linux left aside. Now think of what you could do with cfw. Play ALL kind of videos over the network, xbmc style, run emus etc. etc…

even if it does get hacked, you will not be able to go online for games because sony can easily detect if your ps3 is modded and can ban you off the playstation network. sont has learned from their mistakes with the psp.

This last comment doesnt make much sense…only 20 and 60 gb PS3’s can really play ps2 games… the 80gb version is practicaly a joke in emulation…and the newly touted 40gb couldnt play a ps2 game if its circuits lives depended on it. Usualy early adopters get screwed…but in my oppinion…we have the best systems… even if they are aging faster then the newer models.
I understand that the 60gb is the only PS3 that has PS2 hardware inside and the 40gb and 80gb have software to emulate a PS2.
So the 60gb is far superior in that sense as far as I know.
And people should moan about a FREE update that may improve something on the system no matter how small.
At least they are updating things quickly.
umm 40gb cant play any ps2 game and 80gb/all pal ps3’s are partially emulated. meaning it has the ps2 GPU chip in it but the CPU is emulated. the US/Jap 60GB and 20GB have bothe the ps2 CPU and GPU chips built in.

Sometimes it can take up to a week to mess up your system?? OK sounds a bit odd, updated Thursday the 13th around 8PM so far still works. If you’re reffering to the person above that had trouble with his new router connecting to the PSN network sounds, like it’s more to do with his router / ps3 then the firmware. Odds are it could be what I had that the ps3 tried to auto-negociate it’s link port speed to 1000base-T when my router only does 100base-T. And where does it say this firmware is more for the 60GB/20GB and only ok for some of the 80GB if that’s what your trying to convey?
The update 2.17 makes a frame forward/slow option and a slow motion forward/backwords while watching a video. You can also skip scenes now with different formats.

dude are you nuckingfuts now mater how you cut it the ps3 has not got 3.10x the power of the 360 .i have both systems not just one like most fans boyz and i can tell you that to emulate the 360 at full speed the ps3 would have to be about 10x the power of the 360 which it is sadly not. as for game ports porting a game is not the same as emulating one for instance when you port a game vast parts of the game code is rewritten to accommodate the target hardware ,when u emulate a system things like system calls and irq (and not mention that the ps3 has less ram free for the user to play with) all these things come into play and then remember that the 360 dashboard is way more complex than the ps3 xmb so you would have to emulate that as well.
if you take for instance the n64 that only ran at 100mhz ,it need a pc that ran at at least 750mhz
and even then it did not run so well. the 360 has three cpu cores and three sub cpu cores that work together the ps3 only has one core and 6 coprocessors and the 6 coproc only work when program to that’s why when games for ported to the ps3 then tend to preform less than on the 360
im sure with the way the computer industry goes…..it only makes sense that a system that was released over a year after the xbox would have lower technology. Your a fucking idiot.
i did not say that the 360 was more powerful i said that emulating the 360 at full speed would not be possible on the ps3 hardware because of the technical differences between the two system and that when a games is ported no emulation is taking place ,more an adaption of code to the target system. other commentors on this blog seem to think that it would be possible.

How is the PS3 lower on technology, there both pretty even. They both have great graphics capabilities using their respecitve video graphics cards. Both output at high resolution levels with great graphics. I don’t think graphics is argument, it’s only noticeable when the game company makes ports over to the ps3 then of course the game suffers and looks worst then it does on the 360.
Pure processing power could go to the 360 then again, it would be something to benmark if you could get an application to run on both systems. The 360 has a 3 dual cores if i’m not mistaken. The PS3 has of course the cell processor – so as far as processing information or calculations you would need a benchmark app capable of performing a benchmark on both or calculate it somehow else to get a result.
They both have online, I play online. Only lag I experience is with some users that are lagging themselves not with everyone. It’s just like being on a laggy server or match in a fps or any other network play scenario. I will say that it appears as if Sony is finally refining the Playstation Network, I downloaded some trailers the other day, went much faster then before. Will have to keep watching it to see if it’s for real thou.
That’s going to be true of anything, if you port it over – odds are you aren’t writing the code from the ground up to work with the hardware, you’re just re-hashing and re-configuring, re-compiling it over again in other to work with a different hardware platform.
Yeah that’s why games to the PS3 have been lagging, there redone over ports from the xbox 360, however the few games so far that have been written for the PS3 only have indeed started to show merit of what the PS3 can do when it has something coded for it properly. Taking Drake’s fortune and Heavenly Sword, you can’t say the graphics in both games are near flawless. No complaints about it looking better on the 360 or the game running slower since it’s not a port. Once the game developers start writing games from the ground up for the system then it will not suffer from these poor ports and unjust comparisons to the 360. If a game comes out on both and both are written from the ground up it would be great to see a comparison to see if they made both well. Instead of making one, and then taking that and warping it into a port for the other.
well we should see this with SW: Force Unleashed, i believe that is written from the ground for both systems.
also the only reasons why ps3 graphics aren’t better then the 360’s is because as caster troy said, they are ports, the system’s hardware isn’t fully used, and emulating an xbox 360? please, even a computer would look shit with a 360 emlator, think guys, sure you can make one, but what’s it worth, playing GOW with shit graphics and slow gameplay, save me the time.
That’s right. SW The Force Unleashed should show us how a properly coded game built from the ground up on both systems should be. It should be equal on both systems – no glitches neither one being supped down, or toned down or stripped of graphic enhancements. Both systems can display amazingly great graphics at a high level so there shouldn’t be much of a discussion there, it’s a matter of coding it. Provided they took the time to make it equally good on both systems and didn’t do it great on one, and half-asses on the other.

anybody with half a brain know’s that as powerfull as the ps3 is ,it has not got the kind of cpu power to emulate the 360 at full speed.
hackers can not perform hardware magic tricks if a cpu is not powerful enough to do a job then with out replacing the cpu you have to work around the lak of power and (the cell cpu just does not have the kind of power that is need for successful full speed emulation of the 360 ,just trying to emulate the cpu on it own is a task and a half and then you have to emulate the gpu remember that the 360 uses unified shaders not a standard shader architecture like the ps3(if you don’t understand about how shaders work then goggle gpu shader architectures and you will understand better what i am telling you ) as for the psp the ps3 has way more protection than the psp and thats why within less than a year of the psp going on sale it was hacked, i see no such hack for the ps3 so i guess only time will tell.

You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB.
Resume Play – begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.
There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 – we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

thanks for using my screen name and posting for me but first of all every single word i said is true. the ps3 can not emulate the 360 at full speed on the other hand i did not say that the ps3 could not be hacked and i did not say that the ps3 could not emulate other older systems, i only said that emulating the 360 at full speed would be next to impossible. as a matter of fact the 360 emulates the old xbox in software for it’s backward comp ,emulating a system that is way less powerful than your own is way easier then emulating a system that just about on par with the target system as the 360 is. to put is simpler a 64bit system emulating a 32bit ,16bit,or 8bit system is a walking in the park but a 256bit system running at 3.2ghz trying to emulate a 256bit system running at 3.2ghz is a tuff job.
