It means that unsigned home written code has been run on the machine theoretically opening the doors for programmers to write code to run on the machine. But, from what ive read, it is very hard to write code to utilize the cell processor, so unless we get a nice development kit leak, it will be another obstacle to figure out the entire infrastructure of the machine and how to make quality programs for it.

Everyone has some *basic* knowledge of SELF format and have read source code of elf2self knows that it can’t work. For many reasons.. The most import: Sha1 (checksum) of self isn’t recomputed (and can’t be recomputed without having all elf in cleartext). Bad checksum means that executable can’t pass any authentication on ps3.. so black screen means only the gameos can’t manage elf2self output, ’cause ps3 thinks is corrupted (and it is :P ). That code proved one thing. Ice Team is really far, not only to break ps3, but even to understrand how really it works.
I’ve put in uri – the evidence on using of sha1. it’s based on alanysis done on a cleartext warhawk self by gigi and ralferoo on ps2dev forum.

WOW! Anybody can make a blank image file with some words at the top. You can’t even see the image type and the image opens straightaway…normally when you open a TIFF to do an exploit the screen goes blank for ages. This just looks like a picture being displayed!

i agree with scbond and 0xBADCAB1E. it could very well be a large (uncompressed) tiff image with a black background and the worlds ‘hello world’ which would require some time to load. in my opinion, this video proves nothing. it’s likely a F*** you to ps3news.com (the end of the video says ps3news suck) whether or not it was released by team ice or someone else. ps3news has been somewhat bashing team ice’s ‘discoveries’ in the past few weeks.

has anyone noticed that in the video, when he’s going through the folders and gets to the “tiff” file, there are 3 icons that show up, and as he starts to scroll down, a 4th icon appears and then disappears? also, the text beside the icons flickers from small to large. and lastly the waves in the background also jump in position when he gets to his “tiff” file. the video is obviously edited. i also tried opening up a large tiff file with the words hello world on the ps3. i get pretty much the same results. it waits awhile to load and then pops up. from my tests, the ps3 won’t read image files over 40 megs but requires a several seconds to open it. in order to make the file not show a preview pic, all you need to do is make the tiff file layered (when reading the file from memory card). it won’t show a preview of the pic and instead will show the default photo icon. i pretty much achieved what he did. this is totally bogus.

i tried loading really high resoultion images on my ps3 and it doesnt work. The PS3 doesn’t even recognize it exists
as i stated earlier, the ps3 has problems reading image files over 40 megs. i made a tiff file that was 38.5 megs (4500×2531). loaded it onto a memory card. it took about 9 seconds before the file would load up.

I’m not exactly sure on files near 30 or 40 megs… however I am converting some of my dads old slides into JPG format, and they are 12 to 15 megs a peice. When on the hard drive, the PS3 can rotate them in circles in real-time..no joke. It takes my computer 20-25 seconds to just rotate it to the side… and another 20 secs to rotate it again. Rotating the same picture on the PS3 takes less than 1/2 a second. Ever since I saw that…i am just in Awe of how powerful the PS3 actualy is… and to think…its a year old!

Well it was nearly a matter of time to finally exploit the system and run unsigned code. The real question is, who wants to host the Blu-Ray discs? Also, please remember on-line play might be a little difficult down the line. Sony LOVES to force those updates before even getting into the PSN. My opinion is that making homebrew for the PS3 wont be as easy as the PSP or any other system.If game developers, that have the “help” of SONY, say that making games for the PS3 is hard, making homebrew will be VERY hard. But anyway, I hope someday they hack the PS3 and make some good homebrew for it, like the PSP.

i think the problem is, mostly 90% or more of the traffic on these hack sites is all people who know nothing about anything and are just waiting for someone else to do it for them so they can download the apps they need. unfortunately i’m in that category myself.
