PS3 Megabox Homebrew Project

Posted by greg on January 18, 2008

Do this, now:

  1. Install Petitboot (download below) See project page.
    • copy or burn “otheros.bld” (the boot loader image) to a USB stick or DVD-R/CD-R, etc… under the /PS3/otheros directory; i.e.) F:\PS3\otheros\otheros.bld
    • insert whatever media used from above into the PS3, navigate to System -> System Settings -> Install Other OS
    • set your default operating system to “Other OS” — System -> System Settings -> Set Default OS, and reboot
  2. Burn the PS3 Megabox ISO image (k3b_0.iso) to a DVD or CD
  3. Ensure you’re booting with petitboot (Other OS) and insert the PS3 Megabox disc
  4. Select the disc icon from the petitboot menu
  5. Enjoy!

The result: an awesome PS3 experience. At least that’s the plan. The software is beta so you may encounter strange behaviour or non-working functions. I’ll report back later with an update.

Megabox acts as a full-fledged media server with plenty of extra goodies. Software, including Firefox, emulators, P2P, VoIP, games, etc… Launch PS3 games (blu-rays, not ISOs) directly from the menu. Megabox is also compatible with a variety of TV USB devices. Radio/TV Internet streaming is supported, recording shows, etc… You name it. It’s quite impressive. Unfortunately HDMI out is not [yet] functional.

Yea same, this is awesome, i heard the word emulator!!!

Woah “Emulation of games of almost all the platforms.” Finally i can use my ps3 for that, see this is something finally our community is moving forward! ^_^b

See now if only the interface looked like the XMB then we could use it as a designed PS3 OS xD

Also soli, it clearly says there it doesn’t…or atleast not now since its says theres a future possibility.

Team ICE (Along with StreetskaterFU) has exclusively shared with PS3Hax.net of what all PS3 hackers have been hoping for. After a long journey there finally is a glimpse of hope of a hacking the PS3. Team ICE has found a method run SELF files in GameOS (on firmware 2.10!). In other words they have found a way to run an unsigned code on the RETAIL PS3 via RFOM exploit on the latest firmware.

impressive i would say. even though no iso loader has been out, people should at least try these things to make themselves happy. ps3 is a big entertainment system, now it the ps3 eye, it will be cool to have some homebrew for it, i guess wat programmers can do nowaday is to come up with a OS to install on the ps3 and we are all set to play iso games some day. good work

ok for the people having megabox booting…but loads nothing and freezes the system - I am in the same boat, it is sad :( This looks very promising!!

I have noticed - I assume you all can get to the petiteloader boot screen and have the cd-r or dvd-r show up on the menu then go to boot by pressing 0…and nothing happens….I have noticed that the directory - path it reffers to is different then the one on the official megabox website in the install pics….refer to http://www.megalandia.com/megabox-tv/foro/viewtopic.php?t=174 to see pictures of the install ad the actual path it should be installing to - look half way down the page for the correct path ? If somone can edit the iso to point to the proper paths needed then the problem maybe solved and we can boot - please test asap to see if this maybe the problem!! - i have no time now or I would - good luck - post back yall have a good one :)

then I can just install peitit, run megabox and have fun.

I think this is good, but probably like Sony, I’m a little paranoid that this will eventually lead to pirating ps3 games. As easily as it can be done on the psp. That is my (and probably sony’s) worst fear. If you promise to not let that happen I will support this as much as I can

Hmm, is there a possiblity that this could lead to launching region locked PS1 and/or PS2 games? I’m in the UK but have a HK PS3 so the lack of backwards compatibilty is a bit annoying for me, if this could potentially offer a solution that’d be awesome.

I did find another megabox iso to burn, and it opened up a few different directories when I went to load meagbox.

It had megabox 1,2,3,4,5,6,7….. Nothing worked though.

got it from a link in one of these comments, think it was DJM’s gameblews or whatever link.
