Still no hacks, but good news nonetheless! According to these guys (see source), Sony’s PS3 console will be receiving DivX support in a forthcoming system software update.
DivX today announced that the company will deliver DivX video technology to Sony’s PlayStation 3. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified products have been shipped into the market, and the company expects this number to rise significantly with the new PS3 addition.

It plays I have a short 20 second video I took with my camera that is AVI that works. It used to say unsupported and the other day (after the 2.0 update) I tried it and it worked. The video codec is like MPG 2 or something. not the greatest quality.

getting pretty sick ov having to convert my avi files to mp4 would be great to be able to load them straight to th hd with no messing about

Just out of curiosity who rips stuff to divx anyway? Even when downloading movies/tv shows you don’t see divx anymore. XVID seems to be the standard with x264 used for HD content.
So whats the point of this?
Don’t stress about xvid, all you have to do is change the file header to fool the player into thinking its a divx file. It works for me on my Sony DVD player that only plays divx

This is awesome. Don’t care if it ever gets hacked now. This was a big deal to me. Small things like this made me wish for hacks but It doesn’t hurt anyway except themselves not having it :P

i already hav divx and xvid on my ps3 :D i hav linux on my ps3 :) so thats really nothing new to me my ps3 has full entertainment capabilities :)
Jeez,you just brilliant!! Its not the same though,ie your playing a game then you want to watch a movie or episode you have to mess around setting it to boot from other OS and then rebooting and waiting for Linux to boot up and be ready to play,and all cool PS3 media player features like resuming where you left off and moving icons in XMB,bluetooth remote,Also alot simpler to use for kids and older people who dont know Linux so well!
