PS3 Theme Builder v1.3 *Updated*

Posted by greg on November 14, 2007

Update: Grab version 1.3 to get these latest features:

  • Multiple bug fixes.
  • Added support for custom pointers
  • Added an additional Preview
  • Updated Preview Descriptions
  • Changed the “PS” preview to “PS3″
  • Added support for the Notification Window

Update: v1.2 is out. It fixes an issue which prevented the creation of partial themes. As well v1.2 adds a new preview type. Enjoy!

sbcroix, from our forums, has released a GUI front end which works in conjunction with Sony’s custom theme creator.

“PS3 Theme Builder” runs on Windows (requires the .NET 2.0 Framework) automatically generating the XML & p3t files based on the given input. Build your own themes, modify existing ones, preview, and compile. All from a simple-to-use interface.

PS3 Theme Builder Screenshot

To install simply drop PS3ThemeManager.exe into the root of the p3tcompiler_v101 folder. When the software is first ran it will create a directory called Themes.

The Themes folder is the only place that the software can build themes in. Do not move this folder. Do not attempt to edit themes that do not reside in this folder.

v1.1 updates:

  • Support for multiple background sets.
  • Support for localized theme information.
  • New theme preview generation templates.
  • Theme previews are saved in 2 sizes, one the standard size used by the PS3, and a second larger preview that you can be used in WebPages.

PS3 2.00 Themes

Posted by greg on November 9, 2007

We all know PS3 XMB themes for firmware 2.00 are available through the PlayStation Store. At the same time, you can grab some here. How to install ‘em (thanks for the email FRAK):

  1. Create a folder called PS3 at the root level of your memory card.
  2. Open the PS3 folder and create another folder entitled THEME.
  3. Place your downloaded theme file, ie nature.p3t into the THEME folder. From windows it will appear as: X:\PS3\THEME\nature.p3t.
  4. Now plug your storage device into your PS3.
  5. Go to your XMB –> Settings –> Theme Settings –> Theme –> Install –> Select Storage Device –> Select a theme.
  6. All of the themes you put in the folder with the .p3t extension should be visible and selectable now.

Also up for grabs is a PS3 theme creator for Windows. Should you craft something so awesome that others must see, please email it to us. We’ll be glad to host custom XMB themes.

PS3 Firmware 2.00 Released!

Posted by greg on November 7, 2007

Update: Here is a video demonstrating firmware 2.00…

Update: Sadly you cannot create custom playlists with tracks residing on a networked drive or media server. Only tunes on the PS3’s hard disk can be added. Man oh man…

Update: Friend chat rooms have received a complete overhaul. They’re much sexier with a couple new options. But again, nothing overly impressive.

Update: At first glance, I ain’t too impressed. Still no in game access to the XMB… Extremely disappointed I cannot enjoy my own tunes while kicking ass in WarHawk. I notice a few visual enhancements, nothing spectacular. Information bar is annoying, fortunately it can be disabled. Themes — saw it all before on the PSP. Remote Start is the coolest addition. Weak.

Curious to know what’s new? Click here.

It’s out! Grab it via System/Network Update on your PS3 console!

I’m in the midst of updating right now.

Stay tuned for more.
