Use the PS3 Web Browser (and more?) Without Updating

Posted by greg on October 9, 2007

You’ve been dying for an update, and here is something definitely worthy of posting…

So, you’re in this situation — still sitting at firmware 1.02 (by the way, this was tested on a Japan console running 1.02) and you have no desire to update; perhaps you lust for that speculated ISO loader, whatever the reason. Notice when attempting to fire up the PS3 web browser you are forced to update before proceeding — not anymore! By using Resident Evil Outbreak 1 or 2 (possibly other networked PS2 titles will work) you should be able to bypass that, here’s how:

Team Wormcult quotes…

When you use the networking feature in RE Outbreak 1&2, it allows you to configure your IP settings in relation to your router. I selected the name of my house network and set the IP address to ‘automatic’. I believe it then lets you run a test connection and you are good to go. Afterwards I went to try and start a RE game online and got a message from the server saying they shut it down a couple of months ago. But at that point you are already successfully using your PS3’s wifi to access an outside server. Afterwards when you go into your web browser after quitting the game, it should work with no upgrade needed. So far this has only been tested on my own system, 1.02 Japan unit

Potentially this may lead to bypassing other related firmware checks. I cannot personally confirm because I’m running the latest update; can anyone else test this method? Leave the results below.

By the way, check out Wormcult on iTunes.

HEBBY i agree somewhat. I regularly update to, but if you dont update, that doesn’t mean you can’t play new games. theres a way around that using that TIFF exploit i believe thats what it was. It was posted on here a little bit ago. Just thought id let ya know. [:

Not worthy of an update. If an ISO loader comes out it would have to be compatible with the latest firmware….otherwise nobody will be able to use Home when it comes out….home requires the latest update

Rich. If they made a way to bypass the firmware check on just about everything, im sure they can make one for home. and sense home is a game aplication it shouldnt be too hard to bypass

I assume Home is going to be part of the update. As in, only functional/downloadable with an update. So bypassing the firmware is fine but you couldn’t use Home unless you were on Custom FW

i’m running FW 1.90 and have no problems with the web browser. it doesn’t ask me to update to 1.93. however i can’t access the playstation store. this isn’t all that useful to FW 1.90 users

try using this method to access the playstation store. I can load up the store page at least. I dont know if you need a PS Network account to do anything there or not yet.

i have tried to play swf-games without the webbrowser but at the moment its impossible for me

I was able to use the posted method, to enable my browser, and one of the first things I did was go to Newgrounds.com and load up Alien Hominid. The .swf file loads perfectly. However, I have not yet found a way to play the game as none of my Sixaxis buttons or keyboard buttons seem to do anything beyond moving the window around.

To the people talking about PSN store.. i have been using the store forever and online games, just use the SimpleDNS method and it works fine.

it is now confirmed that you can use this method to play some PS2 games online. I got errors with the Sims Bustin Out for some reason, but Star Wars Battle Front 2 worked fine.

and….if for some reason your internet starts demanding an update again like it began to on the connection test at one point, just do the Resident Evil thing again and it should be back to normal.

i see… so in order for me to comment on anything, i have to come up with a hack (even though i’m not a computer programmer), by, lets say… taking a game from an older system that was released in early 2004 (which i’m sure EVERYONE that owns a ps3 has) and loading it up every single time i want to surf the web on my ps3 instead of my computer (and i do own a 42″ 1080p and web pages still don’t look nearly as good, or have as much functionality) because this allows me to not update my firmware. so if i come up with an AMAZING hack like this, i’m allowed to comment?

you are such an obnoxious bastard. all you bring is hate and negativity to this forum. so you think the hack sucks. big deal. why do you feel so compelled to flame this board with such a rude opinion? are you jealous that someone else is getting a little praise for discovering something? whether you think it sucks or not, it’s up there posted and there is nothing posted in regards to any discovery you have made. people like you just sit around and complain about everything. but you never actually do anything yourselves. and for your information, I tried this out and you only have to use the Resident Evil thing once to set up the IP configuration and then you can use the web browser whenever you want. You dont need to do it over and over. Dumbass.

this is just like the old Wipeout Pure hack for the PSP when you still wanted to use 1.5 but you wanted to browse the internets.
