Launch PS2 .ELF Files (Homebrew) with Swap Magic v3.8

Posted by greg on August 21, 2007

This was reported way back when, before firmware 1.90 & the European PlayStation 3 launch. Now there is convincing video proof (somewhat…) that booting PS2 .ELF compiled binaries is possible using Swap Magic v3.8. Personally I cannot confirm this method to work, due to my current Swap Magic-less state. Watch the video, judge for yourself, and please, if you have Swap Magic v3.8, enlighten us with your experiences below.

Tested using Swap Magic v3.8 on a European v1.90 PS3 (no emotion engine).

  • Create on a USB/Flash drive a folder named SWAPMAGIC
  • Place the .ELF file (of choice) in the SWAPMAGIC folder on USB/Flash drive, and RENAMEthe ELF file you just inserted to SMBOOT0.ELF.
  • Insert the USB/Flash drive in your PS3 USB port.
  • Insert your SWAP MAGIC CODER 3.8 CD, when it launches go to SMBOOT in the menu, and select SMBOOT 0 to run the .ELF.

It’s mentioned this procedure DOES NOT boot PS2 ISO images, or PS3 ISOs for that matter.

Thanks for the email Shak

Interesting. It’s a PS3 running unsigned code, even though it’s using the PS2 kernel. I wonder if there’s a difference between systems with the emotion engine, and ones using software emulation….

would that work?? i thought the whole thing about swap magic was that it uses the hidden Sony boot code that cant be read or written by burners. So how would it work then to download an ISO of that and burn it to disc? I just dont see it happening. let me know if it works for any of you though.

Hey, firstly what is the swap-magic disc? Where do you get one? Also, is and ELF file the sames that are used on the PSP?

Also, This doesn’t look like it will work (The video didn’t show actually playing the homebrew)…

But, thanks for clarifying that it don’t work with ISOs.

OMG!!! Now I see how Paradox Made the ISO Loader!

If you can see it! Just add functions to your own OtherOs or even swapdisc for it to be mounted or treat a folder/ISO in the HD as a BD/DISC then thats it! ISO LOADER! Genius! Paradox Truly is ahead of anyone!

Maybe it’s .TIFF/.ELF + Welcome Page!!! WAW!!!! When will they release it!? So excited with this proof of the loader. And this is what they are talking about of holes in the Console still present till firmware 1.xx that gave way for the loader (something like that)

Even if they manage to upgrade the firmware or fix this exploit. We can still edit the old firmwares and make our own firmwares. Haha! That’s why sony is threatening everyone for not using this exploits!

Hope sony don’t go bankrupt. Damn this thing truly hurts in the sony’s side.

ya but as time goes on game developers are learning more and more on developing games. which mean they could possibly fill a whole blu-ray disk which is i think around 50gb. I dont know about other ppl but for me it takes a couple of days to download a 3gb file. i dont have the patience to download a 40-50gb file. although internet speed right now can get up to 40gbps which is really fast and expensive so you never know what will happen in the future.

i think thats the reason GTA4 got pushed into next year. they’re going to add a ton of extra audio files for the radio stations and shit like that. Extra stuff to make the game a little deeper maybe

This might actually work with the action replay i have. Its the one with the media player that will lauch certain ps2 elf files. I used to boot up action replay on my ps2 slim and boot up ps2 elfs to play movies with SMS.

Action Replay–>Max Media Player–>Keylaucher–>ULaunchELF–>SMS

That is the order that works on a ps2 slimline.

y not try to make a magic that could work for ps3 games
u know like a hack for magic

but that means you cant use iso which means.. SHIt

also there should be a custom firmware like for psp (3.40 oe)

when launching launchelf or anything with swapmagic.. i know you can choose system browser, and look through the systems accessories.. if you do that within the ps3.. does it show the ps3 hard drive content? or just stay blank?

Comment by skrapps
2007-08-21 13:39:54

also, if it lauches elf, you can create an elf that loads a driver, so that the ps3 can recognize a usb cd/dvd drive maybe making it possible to do a swap trick via usb cd/dvd rom drive without ever having to open your ps3.?! just an idea..

2007-08-21 13:52:59

oh yeah, just one more thing. people say it doesnt launch iso’s.. but has anyone tried using an external hard drive instead of a flash drive, making a folder, dumping the ps1/ps2 game into a folder on the external hard drive, renaming the ELF of that game to SMBOOT0.ELF and trying to see if the game will launch as is, without it being an image such as iso? just an ordinary data dump?

I found on the offical swapmagic3 site the “swap coder” that make possible to load stuff from your USB Devices meby you can “couple” this with the .elf thing an Boot ps2 and ps3 games from USB Device (like my Archos 20gig MP4 player) this is also a solution for the expansiv BD Ray dvd en burner.

but isnt there a 4gb limitation in the FAT32 file structure? we might only be able to load stuff under 4gb, and we might be limited also to using the PS2 kernel. what that tells me is that the most we can hope for out of this as an iso loader, is something for PS2 games under 4gb and maybe PS1 games too

I wanna add some info, the ps3 is able (i dont know how to say , because my english suck) but when im put DBZ Tenakaichi 2 and play it i can trow out the dvd and play as normal , but without sound and when i use a Special attack or i go to the main menu it freeze till im puttin the dvd back in and it play as normal. So the ps3 can “save” game files in his HDD or somtin else meby is this an exploit?

Comment by everyone
2007-08-22 05:13:22

this happens because the game is probably partially preloaded onto the internal drive during gameplay to increase load speed and provide faster and better gameplay. when you take the disc out, the music and sounds stop because they are still being read from the disc i am assuming.

The .pss files are a video format.

The .elf is usually found within the scus/sles file. I can’t remember if there was a tool to extract that file or not.. You would have to check http://www.alucard.cc

Use Isobuster to extract files.

Regarding the filesize of the games and the hdd fat32 restriction. The first thing we need to do is figure out how to play these, regarding reducing the size of these games to under 4gb then all that is needed is a ripkit.. The site I mentioned already has a database full.

Umm.. cant be done dude. The whole point behind Swap Magic is to actually boot back-up discs, because the PS2/PS3 wont do it. So you NEED the actual copy of Swap Magic to be able to do anything with it - you cant just download it and burn it because it wont load. It costs about $20, just go out and buy one.

swap magic is a secret thing that gamers do with each other when they are gay for each other. they swap games that are favorites of theirs, and then they put those games under their pillows and go to sleep, after making 3 wishes. In the late late night, under a full moon, the Sony Fairy floats in through the window and shaves both of their asses as they sleep. The next morning, both gamers awaken with brand new bungholes!

(hope that helps!)
