These guys could be on to something… Chase_Lambeth and Team PS3 Hacks have discovered some odd behaviour which may potentially lead to playing backed up blu-ray games. Copying a specifically crafted tif image to a USB stick, and attempting to open it seems to cause the PS3 some confusion… While the console remains responsive to controls, you’re able to browse the XMB and launch a game. The game won’t fully launch allowing time for a disc swap. Once swapped, remove the USB stick, and the new game boots — no errors! For a clearer understanding of the said procedure, watch the video…
This potential TIFF exploit has been tested on firmwares 1.31, 1.80, and the latest, 1.90. Further testing is underway, stay tuned for updates.

If this is real then Im sure i am not the only one that feels seeing is believing. saw the other vid on utoob with the exploit.tiff / test.tiff 1.52 k or something for exploit. If this is real release it so people with blu ray burners can try out backups i no (if this is real) that u will be worried they will steal credit (as many sites will do) but understand the majority of the people frequenting these sites are used to that shit and will see that u guys did it (ps3news at least will def give credit). If this is real there is no point in holding back, sure feel free to give a para-dicks type excuse of u dont want it patched but the truth is even if it is (and this is real) that homebrew which could be possibly derived from this exploit (inject some code into the file thats hanging the system (if there isnt already some)) will make it easier to find exploits in future fws as currently those of us trying (and trying hard) to get exploits up and running dont no if they are crashing/exploiting it as theres no code to try and inject.

I’m NOT a PS3 owner, but I have often looked at PS3-hacks.com to see how the scene is going, but, i’ve noticed that some PS3 back-up files are like 7GB and stuff, i’ve seen a few on Torrent sites that size, now it seems that If you could dump the game onto a computer (not sure if that part has been done yet) then you could create an ISO out of the game and burn to a Dual Layer DVD-R…like I say, i do not own a PS3 and i can’t test this in anyway…

The game was never swapped, you still launched the original game that was in the drive when you removed the memory stick.

i have tested it with the tif file from ps3-n..s.com and it works fine on FW 1.90
I have tried this exploit. I tried to switch my “Ridge Racer 7″ To “F.E.A.R” but it just hanged after the you see the PS3 Logo thing. I get the same results as this video if I just leave my game in :P. Can’t wait to see the finished version of this exploit!!!

It worked ,than i tought im goin to try putting a burned game then i get error , so i dont think this is trick for playing backups because u can even swap dics but the ps3 still reads it’s burned. We must find the peace of Xmb that says “mmm let me see it’s a backup game , error!”. or add a file to your backup game from the originail that says “im a orgnial PS disc”

I put the file to the memory stick as instructed (PICTURE/Test.tif), and the PS3 does show the loading icon when in the photo – memory stick menu. but when I go to the game menu and launch the game (rfom), it immediately starts.

Nice that somebody listened to me. I discovered a .tiff exploit on the second day after release. I popped my memory stick from my psp that included (for psp)a downgrader and devhook that both used a .tiff exploit. It works in the PS3 with original firmware. Nobody cared then, why should I give a shit now? What do you care about loading your psp games on your ps3 anyway?

cause it was proven, the disc inserted in the video is not a back-up. It’s a pressed disc. The disc is a Breaker Pro. Look up a Breaker Pro disc label and look at the label of the so-called “Back Up” of the video. Notice something?

All that’s happening here is that the TIFF image has been CORRUPTED to the point that it screws with the PS3’s disk mounting function and locks out any other disc mounting until the stick is removed. It’s not going to let you magically play backups. All the validity checks/verification are still in place.
The “exploit” creator, H3R3TIC, is a failed PSP hacker who attempted to use a nonexistent PNG exploit to make a downgrader for PSP firmware 2.71.
The TIF image isn’t even VAGUELY valid. Not a single byte is an actual TIF file. He just did cat /dev/urandom > Test.tif for a second or two.
The boy is an idiot, flat out, and he does not know how to program. At all. He just hex edits files until they’re so screwed up that he thinks he’s somehow made an exploit.
His site is homebrew271.googlepages.com, where you can see just how much of a failure he was.”
About the disc that was used: “i own that supposed “backup” disc. its called breaker pro, and its just like swapmagic, but for ps1. its not an officially licensed game, and the cover of the disc could pass for a backup disc.” Sorry everyone. I was so excited for a moment.
Alin Almasan you are right, it can be a TIF file that is corrupted so much that it freezes the blu-ray drive until the memory stick/ usb is removed, but also leaves a Vulnerability in that freeze that can lead to a future iso loader or some sort of dev hook like the psp.
I told you this is the way to load your psp homebrew, games, and apps. Anything that can be ran by EBOOT files can be ran on the ps3 with the “correct” .tiff exploit. And if anybody is paying attention I have loaded it straight from memstick in my ps3 and it works. I didn’t do anything except take my card out of my psp and put it in ps3. Looked at files and went to photo-.tiff exploit started without pressing anything. From there I have menu. Select Devhook and load up your psp games on your ps3. I wonder if anybody gives a shit, because I’ve been trying to post this since last November when the PS3 came out and this site had been here collecting dust. Nobody listened then, nobody’s listening now. At least I have my ps3 Exploited, not hacked as I did nothing to my firmware. Did I mention somebody REALLY should look into this more? get your psp files, games, programs on ps3-doesn’t that make booting backups easier? You can make about anything for the psp, so do that and get it to run on ps3 as psp file type using the .tiff and bam! You make the programs, I use them well…
Oops, I forgot to mention use Eboot loader for psp with the .tiff exploit. Not the .tiff that’s new for ps3, the old school psp .tiff that’s needed for Eboot loader for psp firmware. I swear fucking try it! I really would like to come back to this site and see somebody at least tried to work at this. I’m for real, since late November 2006 I’ve known this and there is a lot you can learn by going back to when the psp first got hacked. All I’m trying to say is I want somebody to take a closer look at this .tiff and eboot loader. Try it, love it, and then we can start with the good hacks!

oh and the reason i dont think it will work is just because so far this tiff file hasnt done much of anything for me, so im starting to think maybe this first gen Japan unit may be MORE secure than the ones released in the US. I dont know how, but it seems that way. Either that or the exploits might turn out to be in different places.

I tried that and hen280. Sadly these didnt work, but I did learn something interesting. Before, I couldnt get the Tiff file to show up and do anything unless I changed the extension to .jpg, and when I tried loading up a usb stick with the eloader files, the same thing happened. So I found something cool. If you go to “Photo” and select your USB device without clicking on it, you can click on the triangle and then on “Display All” and you will have access to all the files that previously showed up invisible. I found that clicking on even the folders containing .exe files will give me the same ‘exploit’ result as I did when I clicked on the Tiff file that is being praised so much right now. Every single one of those files that the PS3 cant interpret tend to hang the unit a bit when you try opening them, so they never quite load and a little circle thing appears in the top right corner like its trying to load or something. Thats about all that happens with mine.

yeah this really shouldnt have been hyped so much as a successful disc swap exploit. it doesnt work at all with any combination of discs i’ve tried. but i do notice there is an exploit, something is definitely happening here. i think it pretty much does the same thing as the RFOM exploit, except its not limited to blu ray games. i’d love to see what gets done with this. we could be on the threshold of another golden age of gaming like when the PSP first got hacked. its a very exciting time and i am totally anxious to see what happens, but i’d rather wait and let those who are working on this thing have the time they need to get it done right.

holly shit it worked for me to ps3 1.50 60 gig im swaping ps ps2 ps3 backups.
Japan PS3 1.02 none of it works, just slows it down slightly. The boot becomes inevitable after a few seconds, whether I take out the USB drive or not. When a disc swap does seem successful, I get boot error messages (they have seperate codes for the various formats- PS1, PS2, and PS3 games, and for cds/dvds I think.)

i don’t know if that’s with this, but that’s what you do with swap magic, you run it, then you select to run the a game, but you do this after taking the top off the PS3, and then pull out the swap magic disc then put in your burnt disc, and your set.

I think Dark Alex was probably some scared kid that just turned 18 and is now afraid of the accountability that comes along with reaching the age of majority.
Well, i think its meaningles, because Sony will patch this flaw on the next firmware updates. This is basicaly the problem behind the hackers not releasing a hack (iso loader or other) till today. The PS3 is future prof and hacker prof too, unfortunately. Dark Alex dont have any reason to continue on the scene cause he have his image too explored by the scene and by the noobies of the scene, and the risk was too eminent for him to be arrested by the FBI (maybe he was already under investigation, who knows). The point is, lets forget about DA, and lets not make this big of a wus cause of some realy dumbass exploit, cause the ps3 have firmware updates. The person behind this find have the brain of a wall, cause thanks to him, sony will speed up some security improviments on next reliases, jeopardizing all the work that the true hackers have been doing, on the exchange of some little and dumb glory to have his name on the scene. Remeber all, the real hacker dont expose his or her name for little buggy things, we wait for the real moment to show up the true thing, you all do wrong puting this exploit info to early, now, maybe the future is black for us, or too many people will have to stay on the 1.90, if they want to install any custom firmware or custom app. The problem is not too easy to solve, trust me, give us some time with your, lets say, mouth shut, and maybe in one year you can have your custom firmwares and/or your iso loader, without taking the risk to alert sony of their mistakes, but if they improve the security some little more, forget about anything. Remember, ive warned you.
Sony would be upgrading anyway, and its our choice as to whether or not we upgrade (at least, for now…check out the new ’silent update’ patch on the new iPhone FW, thats some creepy shit right there)

Sephirothff has found a way to launch Swap Magic 3.8 on his European v1.90 PS3 (no emotion engine). Although no PS2 ISO’s are playable its a pretty cool discovery but don’t get your hopes just yet, it’s still only a small discovery, but its also a small step to MAYBE something big.

* Create on a USB/Flash drive a folder named SWAPMAGIC
* Place the .ELF file (of choice) in the SWAPMAGIC folder on USB/Flash drive, and RENAMEthe ELF file you just inserted to SMBOOT0.ELF.
* Insert the USB/Flash drive in your PS3 USB port.
* Insert your SWAP MAGIC CODER 3.8 CD, when it launches go to SMBOOT in the menu, and select SMBOOT 0 to run the .ELF.

It’s an image file just like jpeg but in .tif you can put a code in it (a hacking code for ps3) and the ps3 reads it as an image when u open it the ps3 reads your hacking code.
