80GB PS3 Arrives in North America

Posted by greg on August 7, 2007

Sadly it would seem the PS3 is harder to hack than develop for. Due to the lack of PlayStation 3 hacks, I’ll share this news tidbit with y’all… The 80GB version is now available in North America. It’s retailing for $599 US / $649 Canadian. The 60GB model is to be phased out; analysis are expecting the remaining units to last until fall. Smart move for Sony, or stupid?

First released in South Korea, the 80GB PS3’s US debut was announced alongside a $100 price drop for the 60GB PS3. Though the latter’s new $499 price point was hailed as a long-overdue move by analysts, its rapt reception dissipated somewhat when Sony confirmed it was ceasing manufacture of the console and phasing it out.

But while the 60GB console’s days are numbered, its supply is holding up despite a massive increase in demand. According to Sony, sales of the console have increased 113 percent at its top five retail partners–Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and GameStop–when compared to average sales during the month before drop. Sony did not supply specific sales figures for the PS3, which sold 98,500 units in the US in June, according to the NPD group.

Just so you know guys the 80GB version doesn’t have backwards compatability hardware and instead relies on software emulation, which means that their is a chance you won’t be able to play some of your PS1/PS2 games.

Theres very little chance a game wont work. Europe has had the software emulation since day 1 and I think 85% of all PS2/PS1 games work. Out of the thousands of games in the libraries, that means a couple hundred dont work.

Ok, but if imagine if one of the major titles everybody still plays ends up as one of those 200.

80 gigs might not be as useless as you think because i have heard that eventually games will save more data on the hard drive and they said some games may be larger than 20 gigs.

You are Stupid. You will never download a 20G game in a sony network.

Space will be a major issue in the future.. I have the 60gb console and I have every single demo available resulting in me having 20gb left.. I know for a fact I will end up upgrading the Hd due to lack of space… Why pay 100+ dollars for 20Gb more when you can buy a Hd of 500Gb for around the same price…. I also believe the 60Gb unit has an exploit and thats the reason they want to delete it from the scene….

I think the hackers have been stumped, whenever somebody gets close to creating a good hack they come out with a new Firmware update and BAM! Back to square one. Not to mention the people who have already hacked the PS3 refuse to give there hacks to the public. And screw not doing the FW update because there are some really good features in them. I’m thinking the only way for the PS3 to be hacked would be to use a mod chip.

PS3 File Editor Beta….thats been out for weeks already it seems, and it has gotten no mention here. it can be found at http://www.ps3hax.net/

There was also something about a way to back up PS2 games using a SATA drive adaptor. No mention of that here either.

Whats going on?

This is garbage. I will say this is garbage until Sony starts to appreciate their long time customers. I can understand a price drop over a 2-4 year period to cut costs or to gain a bigger market share. But to those of us who bought a PS3 under a year ago should feel like we got ripped off by Sony. How are they going to do this to us now. I demand either a free game, free download money in my “wallet” or something worth the 20gb loss that we have to deal with. I know we can upgrade, but my 1st year on the warrantee isn’t even up. I feel cheated. Even PSP’s price didn’t drop for almost 2 years.

Want to start your private office arms race right now?

I just got my own USB rocket launcher :-) Awsome thing.

Plug into your computer and you got a remote controlled office missile launcher with 360 degrees horizontal and 45 degree vertival rotation with a range of more than 6 meters – which gives you a coverage of 113 square meters round your workplace.
You can get the gadget here: http://tinyurl.com/2qul3c

Check out the video they have on the page.

Cheers
