PS3 Price Cut!

Posted by greg on July 9, 2007

Update: This was just brought to my attention… (Thanks Daniel)

Could the welcomed $100 price cut for Sony’s PlayStation 3 be temporary? Reported comments from multiple Sony execs in online publications Gamesindustry.biz and Joystiq.com indicate so. The current PlayStation 3 model, which is equipped with a 60 GB hard drive, certainly has received a price cut to $499 and is available at that price right now - but Sony’s recent statements indicate that model is no longer in production.

Weak! Read full article here.

Unfortunately no news relating to hacks, so this is the next best thing… After much talk & anticipation, Sony has finally decided to drop the PS3 price by $100. Console gamers, starting July 12th, can pick up a PS3 for $499.99 USD.

Perhaps more owners will result in more PS3 hacks. :)

To add salt to my wound, theyre also throwing in Motostorm with the 80GB unit.. I know the Hd is customizable, but still it hurts…..

Early System adopters always get burned, But you know who the real fans are by what they are willing to spend on the system. 100$ cut is nice but I would have been willing to pay 100$ more for my system. I’ve put more money into my 360 and use it less. Sony new they would cut the price by the end of 07 when the system came out they just needed to make as much money back as possible for taking such a hit.

If you guys looked at the PS3 as a TOTAL packaged media center and not just a video game console you will be much happier. Especially when you start using it as one.

its funny that all the noobies go for xbox360. the more funnier is that they dont know that most of the xboxes go to the factory again for repair -> nice red button LOL…
and what they also dont know is that the xbox360 is using 90% of its total power to run games. and the ps3 20% at the moment, see what happening when the ps3 is running on 90% and @ 1920×1080p resolution… i can say one thing then: bye bye xbox360:)))

the price drop is just to liquidate all current PS3 inventory in order to make way for the new 80gb model to replace it at full price on the shelves this Xmas. its rumored that the new 80gb system doesn’t include the graphics synthesizer chip required for full backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games. I believe that there’s a massive exploit they can’t patch and are trying to bury it before anyone finds it. I think it has something to do with that chip, and the PSP…because they are also releasing a totally new design of the PSP as well almost simultaneously. While this may be for any number of explainable reasons, it is still quite possible and probable that there is a major exploit that they are afraid of in those current PS3 systems. Has anyone tried using the PSP to hack the PS3 yet? Whether it involves some sort of part swapping strategy or homebrew app on the PSP to decrypt something on the PS3 via Wifi or USB connection, I really think there is something in all of this to try exploring. Its a massive move on Sony’s part to just abandon their product line, redesign it, manufacture it, and redistribute it. That kind of business move would only make sense if they feared a probable financial loss equal to or greater than the cost of that decision, and this is a ton of money they would be throwing away to make such a move possible. If they REALLY feel its worth it, then there’s got to be something big around the corner in the way of homebrew that noone has discovered yet.

I concur with “everyone”….. I found it fishy from the get-go that the size increment was only 20GB…. And as an incentive their also adding Motostorm… The system has only been out for around 8 months and its already being redesign…. Thats suspicious.. It can also be viewed from a marketing perspective and an argument can be made for the fact that no one is buying the system.. If sales is the main reason theyr doing this they need to hire new recruit because all they need are some games… They should have been patient and waited for titles like Call of Duty 4, GTA4, MGS4 and many others… Im sure Ps3s would have had flown off shelves…………..

i Just found a way to freeze my PS3. its totally unresponsive, except for the BD drive. I can still eject and insert discs. however the hypervisor is totally frozen in place. The only way to power down the unit will be by using the switch on the back.

My system is version 1.00 from the original Japan launch, upgraded to FW 1.02

To acheive this crash, I made a folder of images to be burned to disc. My Friend had Toast Titanium on his Mac so I thought I’d try that out to see how well it makes cds. There is a function on that to make files invisible. So to add extra weight I decided to copy the same folder a couple of times as an invisible file. The size of the image folder is 136.8 mb, and I started that off by making that as the main folder for the whole disc (the root folder), then inserted a copy of that same folder (named the same) into that folder and made it invisible. Then I put another copy of that folder also with the same name, into that invisible folder and made that one invisible too. Total size of the disc is 412.3mb and it completely freezes the PS3 hypervisor while still allowing disc eject and insertion. Who knows if that could be a break for anyone out there working on finding holes for homebrew, but its definitely something I think you guys should try.

Comment by everyone

note- the root image folder is not made invisible, only the copies of that folder that were put inside

Comment by everyone
2007-07-14 20:52:56

oh yeah, and the crash takes place when you try to access the inserted image disc through the photo area, and I dont know if this is important or not or if its a common thing that just happens, but when i clicked on the disc under the photo section of the Hypervisor, I got a folder that showed up as “PS3 Data” and thats when it froze.

thats a very intresting thought, i was thinking about alot of that as well, but i dont understand what psp has to do with ps3 as far as a hack went. i mean how would it work, how can psp have an affect on a iso loader or anything at all. if there something that you know of let us know about your theory, this is most intresting thought about an exploit yet. is there any info on the chip at all? if so post it. well i’ll try to mess around with it to see if what you say is possible. i mean theres gota be something. is there any programs or programing software to this thought?

Comment by everyone
2007-07-15 02:25:09

well, since the PSP has been fully hacked and opened up, we can put whatever apps on there we want to if we are able to write them. i personally am not a programmer, so I cant really explore my theories on that level. but i am hoping people like yourself will take interest in what im saying and try exploring those avenues if they havent already.

i guess the theory goes like this, we have two pieces of Sony hardware designed to work together, and one of them has been totally hacked while the other has not. As the firmware levels have progressed, it has become clear that Sony eventually intends on having the PSP become a long range internet based interface for the PS3. The way the design seems to be going, the PSP could eventually have full control of the PS3. Whether or not this happens, or has already happened, the fact of the matter still remains that the homebrew community has established full control over a piece of Sony hardware which is potentially able to control a much larger piece of their hardware. I believe this is why they are attempting to liquidate and replace all PS3 and PSP inventory simultaneously.

My suggestions? I am no expert, but based on everything I have read, i’d say the biggest problem on the PS3 is the isolated DRM subsystem. If you could maybe write an app for the PSP that could mimick the DRM process when a disc is inserted into the PS3, so that you could connect the PSP to the PS3 before inserting a disc into the BD drive, then maybe you could spoof the DRM subsystem somehow and send the BD drive to check in the spoofed DRM subsystem you create on your memory stick on the PSP or something. I dont know if this is even possible, but its an idea. Try it out if you want.

Another problem you guys seem to have, is the encrypted internal drive on the PS3. Maybe since the PSP uses Sony hardware, you can use it to run some kind of decryption algorithm that the PS3 will understand and accept.

With the PSP, you have the potential to inject code into the PS3 that can possibly be interpreted by the machine as “official Sony code”

thats my theory at least. i’d really like to see some homebrew advances soon. i hope this helps someone

2007-07-15 02:28:37

also, remember what I said about the PSP becoming a long range internet based interface for the PS3? if you may notice or recall, Sony started making all these announcements for new PS3 and PSP hardware not long after people in the homebrew community started messing around with internet based exploits on the PS3, namely the ‘Folding at Home’ exploit. The answer may be somwhere in that, with the combination of inserted code via the PSP

also, something that might help i found quoted from Paradox– “the first sectors from a PS3 image (sector 0 to 20) are special and may be the decryption keys for the executables.”

Yes you can install updates that way, its how i do it and its MUCH faster then waiting for the downloads.

Create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”. Download the update and save it in the UPDATE folder. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters. File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.
