It may be possible to execute some homebrew goodness on your ol’ PS3 console soon… Its been reported that hackers have stumbled upon a method of copying their own files to the PS3 HDD by utilizing a network vulnerability. This method is possible on firmware versions 1.70 to 1.81. You will require the Warhawk Package, for now. Other titles may be subject to the same behaviour. In addition to those requirements you’ll need the Folding@Home DNS Method, an HTTP server, and Ettercap. Ring a bell?
Anyway… We seem to be moving forward, so lets see what the future has in store for us. Kudos to all the dedicated hackers and developers working on this.

They made a big announcement about how they plan on going after anyone who uses an exploit to modify their machines for loaders and shit, and only about 3 or 4 days later, all of a sudden someone finds an exploit. Now, to me this means either they saw this coming and decided to make a pre-emptive announcement, or this is something they set up. If it’s the latter, then it should really be considered what that could mean to homebrew users. But whatever, you obviously dont seem like the type of person who could really take someone else’s opinion without trying to bash them for it, so talking to you is rather pointless. you fools, you dont need an internet connection, the method “hijacks” dns requests coming from the ps3, this is all done locally, you need a pc running a proxy software, but you dont need a net connection. as long as the ps3 points to the speical proxy as its default gateway.

just thought i would burst a few bubbles. as far as i know this simply allows adding files to the hard disk. this is a big step, don’t get me wrong, but its roughly the same as having the ability to write to a psp’s memstick. the only difference is that with ps3 this is hard but with psp this is part of the package.Now the bad part, the ps3, like the psp, will probably not run unsigned code, so once you get the files onto the hard-drive you still need to find an exploit that will allow you to run it. This may take long time.

That is a question I have been asking for a while and am still not sure of the answer. I would say stay on 1.51 for the time being (i am on 1.50) just in case another vunerability is found in the lower firmware versions, I mean the exploit they have found at the moment is a fucking tedious-to-setup method for simply copying files to the hdd on the ps3, now they can do this the next step is to find an exploit to execute the said files(self’s I believe) rather like the method originally used to downgrade on the psp (specially crafted tiff file that caused an overflow that overwrode the security stopping unsigned code from running.
Who knows the exploit that gets uncovered could exist in all firmwares up to say version 2.0 but do you really want to take that chance, Stay on 1.51 until more is uncovered. You dont want to be one of those people who pop up in the psp forums all the time like “Need downgrader for 3.50 now please”

see, here’s what i dont get. there have been so many ’security patches’ in the updates for the PS3 so far, so you would think that there were already a ton of holes that could have been exploited. whats the deal with that anyway? did anyone ever find anything in the previous fimwares? i think if you were to compare the update files for all the different firmware versions, there may be some way of finding the holes in previous versions by making a note of what has been changed in the newer versions, more specifically, changes that would not seem to have any added functionality or purpose.
See, thats what I’ve been waiting for someone to comment on. It’s not like you need to sit here and go through all of the code base for the entire firmware. Do a diff between to firmwares, read the change-log (release notes?) and then focus on finding the security holes that they are fixing in the new firmwares.
i just upgraded from 1.00 to 1.02 recently, and even that made me feel all dirty and regretful. Sony keeps tightening their security but as they do it in the newer firmwares, they are revealing where we should be looking in the older ones. Their strength becomes their weakness in that regard.
my big concern these days is, will it be possible to do a region code hack on an original Japan release PS3? i heard it has an extra chipset built in to enable PS1 and PS2 games, but because this is hardware based I fear it may be a problem when it comes to region spoofing in future homebrew releases.
back to the main topic of the thread though, for continuity…i think the lower firmwares probably have the biggest and easiest security holes. its just a matter of finding them, and using the firmware updates in the manner mentioned above is probably the most efficient way of doing so.
See that’s the thing. “Security FIxes” does not mean every exploit in previous versions allowed you to bypass the hypervisor or let alone play backups. I’m sure there are a few holes, but some could be like memory overflows, internet security fixes, etc. Now don’t get me wrong, I truly believe we will be playing backups on the PS3 or even ISOs, but perhaps we will have to ait for Sony to get their best firmware out, hack that and have a perfect PS3. Just like starting out on the PS2 with a NEO 2 chip and now having ISOs on HDD’s in the PS3. Let’s just let the hackers hack and be patient.
