Firmware 1.81 Released!

Posted by greg on June 15, 2007

Update: Here are the official changes:

  • The method of setting [RGB Full Range (HDMI)] under [Display Settings] has been improved.
  • The stability of the network connection used during gameplay has been improved for some PlayStation®2 format software titles that support online gaming.

Fetch firmware version 1.81 via System Update on your PS3 console. As per the usual, the official PlayStation.com website has yet to provide details. In any event, it’s a safe bet some bugs have been ironed out and the overall security of the system has been strengthened.

After upgrading my console (just now) I can personally confirm the “RGB Full Range (HDMI)” issue has been corrected. Tweak that option under Settings -> Display Settings. And if your TV set supports it, you’ll notice quite the visual difference.

it does seem that sony are just bringing out updates that are only usefull to a very small percentage of the gaming community. i still havemy fingers crossed that a big update with in game xmb will come out soon. will be much better for the likes of project 8 where the music is lame in it.
wonder if there will be a 1.9 beofre a 2.0

I really want to buy Resistance Fall Of Man, but I heard it’s made for version 1.10 or 1.11 and I’m on 1.00 (i dont want to ruin the perfection of having that). I think I heard somewhere that the Japan version of RFOM runs on 1.00 fw. is that true? and is the other thing true about the US version requiring fw 1.10 or 1.11?

also, can anyone confirm whether or not I can resolve the region coding issue I’m having by updating to a US firmware (i bought a 1.00 Japan unit from the original release in November). I suppose having a 1.10 would be worth it if it fixes the region coding issue. anyway, let me know what you guys think, if it would work or not.

that really does not help. I plan on getting one of those eventually anyway. i want to know about my PS3 and if there is a region code fix in the works for that yet or if its even possible. i know there was one for the PSP, so there must be one possible for the PS3

I’m not going to update. I love the idea that I might be one of the last people in the world with an original Japanese 1.00 release. If no homebrew ever comes out, so be it. As far as I’m concerned this is a major collector’s item and it does enough cool things on it’s own for me to be happy with it. I love the way it can be used as a media player for example. I can compress like 300 or more movies and just sit back with my controller and navigate through what I want to watch. Then theres the BD drive, and hopefully some games might even be compatible with this firmware. I’m cool with it the way it is. A bonus would be a region coding fix, but I already have an old PS2 anyway, so if anything its kind of cool that I can have access to Japan titles now. I’m looking forward to finding some nasty Hentai games! lol

I was reading the forum about the loader, and it seems like a lot of people here have been a little pushy with the developers of that thing, and it seems like they are getting upset over it. I dont blame them. It’s probably a lot of work. If you guys want a loader to come out soon you should do your part and give out ideas and tips you think might help them get over some of the hurdles that come along, and encourage less motivation for piracy and more towards the idea of having a tool that will allow us to back up and play the games without having to update, and having something around that will make our games run faster, and save the lifespan of our BD drives…because once you get a misaligned lazer problem like I am sure will happen as did with the old PS2’s, then you will most likely get stuck sending the unit to Sony, and it will come back with the latest firmware and possibly some changes on the motherboard. Using this app for piracy is like standing on a ship in the middle of the ocean and jumping up and down to see who can poke a hole in the bottom first. When game developers lose incentive to make games, we lose systems. Unfortunately our relationship with Sony will always be kind of love/hate and symbiotic at best. Just something we all have to deal with if we want to keep going with all this and maybe see a PS4 someday. They seem to be building on the technology to make it all work together, as with how the PSP relates to the PS3, so maybe future units might be able to connect to the PS3 and use it for extra processing power or something. Sony is a great company in that regard. As for the way they keep going to war with their customers, they really suck as a collective of individuals at times, but then again so do those in the homebrew scene who shout out about “gimme the loader i want to stick it to Sony and copy all the games” gee i wonder why Sony doesnt like us…

Anyway, thats how I feel about all that shit. As for providing the Paradox crew with some input that might help, I think one big issue that seems to be there now is the whole size limitation thing in the way of the game files. Why not maybe use something similar to PSP’s Fastloader, where it breaks down the files into segments that can be transferred and stored in seperate areas but reassemble when loaded from the same directory later?

My two cents. It’s only two…i cant even buy a stick of gum with that, so dont flame me :-P

you’re exactly the kind of person i was talking about. you can barely form a coherant sentence, but you’ll hang out on forums to flame people and complain to developers about how they arent getting you your new technology fast enough. its people like you that are making the homebrew scene fall apart.

if it’s done soley for the sake of piracy I agree, but there is some legitamate use that can come out of it, as I mentioned above. Maybe Sony could experiment with providing that kind of functionality under a DRM based architecture so that the games could be backed up and played only if someone has the store bought discs, and could not be copied or distributed outside the PS3 machine that they own. Every PS3 has it’s own MAC address and isolated DRM subsystem, so you would think Sony could finally use this platform to give people what they want and stop all of this, without shooting themselves in the foot.

I am personally looking forward to music apps, like PSPRhythm, and PSP KIck. I cant wait to see what the PS3 can do in those areas.

and yeah it sucks that this bitter conflict i still going on. I think the homebrew community made a major win when they finally got through to Sony and had the company give in by providing us the option of installing our own personal computer OS on the machine. What other gaming platform has done that? None. We won, we changed something, and now people are still just like “Fuck Sony, they’re not getting any of MY money, I’m waiting on the ISO loader, blah blah blah”. All things considered, we had a chance for peace with the company and those who are still hellbent on getting all the games for free are fucking it up. It’s sad too, because these are some beautiful machines they’ve been giving us lately. I think both the PSP and the PS3 are works of art. I cant imagine taking my PS3 apart and cutting the wires and drilling little holes in the case, just to be able to get a free game or two out of it. Why not just buy the damn games if you want them that bad. If you can afford a system, then…i mean come on…lol

Over the weekend placa shared with us in THIS Forum thread news of a potential PS3 exploit discovery. Many of the resident PS3Dev’ers experimented with it throughout the weekend, and several (including both CJPC and subdub among others) were able to successfully reproduce and confirm it as working!

Although the actual PS3 exploit itself requires no (c) files from the recent PS3 $DK leak, at this time only those with access to it can copy/upload .SELF (encrypted; standard ELF files currently don’t work) files to the PS3 HDD in order to test them. Initially it was thought this method would work with v1.60+ PS3 Firmware, however, at the time of this writing it appears to only work with v1.70+ PS3 Firmware. Please NOTE that this may change, and also we do NOT yet recommend anyone update their console due to this news.

Why not update yet? According to several PS3Dev’ers, this PS3 Network Hole found (including bypass, fake PKG, etc) is now a way for Devs to attempt to copy/replace a .SELF (executable) file to the PS3 HDD… however, they have yet to actually upload a file which brings about a true “Hello World PS3″ (which is the primary goal of course, followed thereafter by homebrew, iSO Loaders, and so on). As always, we will post updates as they are available so be sure to stay tuned throughout the week!
