Bootable Blu-Ray Backups!

Posted by greg on June 7, 2007

Update: Unfortunately the used method of renaming/patching “Mkfs.self” does not work on firmwares greater than version 1.11. If you’re running a later firmware, you’re out of luck, for now…

Have a gander at this…

In the words of Master P, make ‘em say uuuuuhhh…

Couple things to keep in mind:

  1. The discovered PS3 XMB vulnerability seems to only be present in firmwares 1.10 & 1.11. There is a possibility it may exist in later versions; that’s yet to be determined.
  2. The PS3 Blu-Ray backups only boot — they don’t quite “run” yet.

But, hey! It’s another step forward!

hacked2123 says…

Once again I offer no guide till the project is done, but let it be known the flaw was the result of otheros.self on firmware version 1.10 and 1.11 (and maybe more). Today I successfully, as shown in this video, managed load a burn disk and have it be recognized in the area a PS3 game would be recognized. Much must be done, because as of yet the original will not boot, but when those complications are worked out, we will be one step closer to homebrew I hope.

Congratulations!

blu-ray burner is like $600, and the discs are $25-30 a pop locally.. don’t seem worth it for an extra $10 you can have the legit disc preplayed.

We need something that can play ISOs from the PS3 hard drive… that way we can back up PS3 games on a couple of DVDs or so & load them onto the PS3 hard drive (via a PC or an external hard drive - hopefully) & that’ll be cheap ;) a quid a game tops!

2007-06-09 02:37:25

won’t happen, there’s a 4GB size limit with files, it’s hard to explain, but if you have a file or another ISO that’s 4GB plus….try to move it to an external HDD, it won’t happen, there’s a limit that stops it, and i think that it’s not possible to get by that…until either better technology…or never

Surely NTFS can do it… I have files over 4gb.

I’m not sure, my PC wouldn’t let me move my back-up of God of War 2 to my external, and it’s over 4gb. I had to delete and re-rip it to the external.

yes you need to format your Ext. HDD to NTFS for it to store above 4gb, but be careful, after the ext. HDD is in ntfs it will not work on computers that have os below XP, if your transfering files using ur extHDD on 2 computers that use xp and (like win ME) this will cause a problem

well u ungrateful, yes a burner costs 600 bucks but look at it this way…its an advancement

like the xbox 1
the games were first “backuped” by discs and then the method of playing them off the harddisk came..give it time..if you think u can do better than you make your own shit so we can leech off you…

i finally have the means to get a PS3. im hoping im not too late, in terms of getting the right firmware. do you know what current firmware I would get if I bought one from Gamestop in a couple of days? Please tell me they still could be carrying 1.10 and 1.11’s

they have no way of letting me open the box to see first, so its kind of a luck of the draw type thing. i mainly want it for homebrew. im kind of worried i might get the wrong version, or that even if i do and homebrew takes off for this thing, that not too much stuff will come out for this thing for whatever reason. it could be harder to write stuff for the PS3 somehow. maybe its more complicated than a PSP, i dont know. I’m hoping I can run Windows on there, back up my old PS1 and PS2 games, play new games off the hard drive to avoid wear and tear on the Blu Ray drive, and I would really love it if someone made some really cool pro audio apps for this thing. and whats up with Linux, if we can run Linux on there doesnt that mean we can aleady write all the homebrew we need in Linux? nobody’s been quite clear about the whole Linux thing yet. what are the limitations of that feature?

if you go into any shop tht sells a ps3 they will definatly have version 1.60 or higher as m,y freind got one yesterday, but if you looking to get a 1.10 or 1.11 id sey get onto ebay and search playstation 3 firware 1.10 etc good luck.

hmm, yeah i went into a Toys R US tonight and i tried to check the firmware on the demo unit. it wouldnt let me into the system settings because it was running on some restricted ‘demo mode’. which was really annoying, but it was ‘demo mode 1.60′ so im assuming that was also the FW version.

can i do anything cool with a FW 1.60 yet o would i be screwed if i got one of those?

All the PS3s that the shop has are probably 1.6 or later. Still, some might be 1.10. I doubt it though.

you must have 2 original ps2 games, which you probably do, because piracy is wrong.
after you have attempted to install otheros.self with the disguised format hdd self file. you will be redirected to the xmb.
insert your first ps2 game (original) wait a second for it to load up. then eject and your game will still show up on the screen (ps2 format disk), insert another original ps2 game, wait a second. then eject and insert a backup dvd-r of one of your original ps2 games. then click on ps2 format disk, and the game will boot and RUN.
tested on PS3 FW 1.51 PAL :)

inf3tus has released a downgrader modchip for the ps3 and has demonstrated dgrading from 1.6 to 1.5, and is available to order, but there’s likely going to be something better than a modchip with 50 points to solder coming out eventually.

not only that but at this point there’s no reason to downgrade to 1.11, because this method won’t boot the games, however there are other methods being worked on, one specifically for 1.51. keep your eyes peeled.

very cool. so then now is the time to get in on this and grab a PS3 while stores are still selling version 1.60’s? i’ve been really worried that this thing was uncrackable (due to something i read about an ‘isolated DRM subsystem’), so if i was to buy it and get stuck using it the way Sony had intended, i would feel like i just flushed $600 down the toilet. Then again if i wait too long and Sony pulls some lame TA-082 type shit with the PS3 motherboards I would be even more pissed for missing my chance. anyway, thats the position i’ve been in lately. im also hoping for a price drop before i pick one up, but im worried that by the time they drop the price, those might be newer units with added ’security updates’. Also, i am considering the trade-in deal for my PS2 but I really hate the idea, considering its an old fat PS2 in perfect condition. then again, if the PS3 can make backups of PS2 games then its totally worth it.

anyway thats all the stuff i’ve been debating about. I’m also wondering if anyone has heard about GTA IV’s online multiplayer mode being limited to Xbox 360’s or if its going to also be available for the PS3? I’m only interested in getting a PS3 for GTA and homebrew…lol

i am totally annoyed with Ebay sellers btw. they keep upgrading the units and then they advertise it as having “THE LATEST FIRMWARE!!!” as if thats a selling point somehow. idiots…lol

hey i have a question about 20 GB PS3 units.

my friend works at a game shop and the demo model they are using is an old 20gb model. he said its always off because it crashes and overheats, and that those arent worth buying because Sony put a recall on them for crashing so much and being prone to overheating. Is this true, or is Sony being sneaky and just recalling them for having some kind of exploit that the other units dont have?
