PS3 Firmware 1.80 Due Out Tomorrow

Posted by greg on May 23, 2007

Update: It’s out! And it works quite well. Stay tuned for a download if you’re not able to update via the PS3 Network Update function.

Well it’s not the rumoured [fake] 2.0 firmware; however, it does in fact support 1080p upscaling for DVDs, PSOne, and PS2 games — that’s right, firmware version 1.80! Read ‘em and weep…

In addition to 1080p HD upscaling, users will now have the ability to view images, listen to music, and play videos over a local network from any supported DLNA3 device — PC, laptop, etc…

Firmware 1.80 truly packs a punch with further enhancements made to its “Remote Play” functionality… PSP & PS3 owners can now access their slick console from anywhere in the world, providing you have a broadband connection and PSP firmware 3.50 (available at the end of May). *Sniff* Do I smell 3.50 OE?! ;)

Last, but not least… Well, sort of… 1.80 includes the ability to print photos directly from the PS3 to a selection of Epson printers, via the USB connection.

Heads up! It’s due out tomorrow.

the ps3 stays in a kind of sleep mode until the PSP wakes it up, and when your done, you can remotely send it back to sleep.

It’s basically a network protocol/architecture that integrates the net, mobile, and broadcast networks through a seamless, inter operable network.

I don’t know anything really about it, but it does seem typical of Sony to buy into proprietary technological bollocks. If anyone knows anything more about it i would love to know, cheers.

Yeeah, I’m using Windows Media Player 11. All you have to do is enable Sharing in Options and it works flawlessly…Cept no album art, but that’s not really worth crying over.

I also use TVersity for videos

I have to admit, my PS1/PS2 games look significantly better in 1080p.
The 1080p 24hz support is a nice bonus I didn’t expect, but even better is that my PS1/2 memory card reader finally works both ways!

Considering the price of most DVD up-scalers, I think this just improved the value of the PS3 greatly.

Is it worth $600? Maybe when some more great games are out. Here’s hoping for a price drop in the not-so-distant future.

Im updating as I type… I really don’t care too much for this upscaling since I play my Ps1 and my Ps2 games on my modded Ps2…. Its nice that SONY is worrying about backwards compatibility but come on SONY its been six months… Your nerds can work faster and get us really significant updates like in-game mp3 playback… As well as many other great feats……….

DLNA – > http://www.dlna.org/
Actually is a communication protocol (sort of) that enables home el. gadgets to exchange data (sound, images, video). I own a Sony DSC-G1 camera that has built in wireless adapter and can connect to a wifi network – it can connect only to DLNA enabled devices …so PS3 ..will be my first DLNA home device!

Nice..that update was cool enough!

the ps2 games look a lil better. but i think they still run better on the ps2 than ps3.. still a bit blocky.. does anyone have any settings that made it look better? at first i ran it 1080p it still looked bad. then 480p and it was a lil better. but not as clean as ps2 console.

There has to be a good reason for them not to release an update where you can change the background, for example the PSP had a background changing ability and there was a Tiff exploit within the pictures folder within weeks of release do u think sony are gonna make the same mistake again?
I think not!
I think they have managed to get one of their paid hackers to hack it and so thats why they arent releasing it.
Well just have to wait until they have it down to a T so that it gives some poor hacker in the real world a bit of a challenge unlike the PSP which was hacked within days of release.

Sorry if i sound a bit angry im not really but I just think that sony are a business and so are gonna try and make as much money as possible through any means neccesary and if that means withholding features then thats what theyll do.

From the little research ive done on DLNA, you have to buy a device or piece of software that is DLNA compliant. So far i have not seen anything under $500. Back to linux on PS3. This is update would have been cool if i was going to be able to browse my personal home network.
As it stands this is a useless update for me. Those that have a PSP will really like it.

Hey guys, word on the street is you CAN stream avi/xvid to ps3 using nero showtime!
quote from another site:
“For v1.80 users: PS3 AVI Transcoding On-The-Fly

If you’ve got a PC full of AVI’s, with the recent v1.80 FW update and a copy of Nero Home or Nero v7.0 you to can now enjoy all your videos as of today by doing the following:”
If this is proved to be working 100% with no quality problems Ithink ill update, set up a media server in a spare room or attic.anyone tried this yet,I cant im on 1.5 for now :)

Yeah i read that post about streaming xvid/divx. I got WMP11 working and i have successfully streamed my mp3’s. When i tried my .avi and divx it didn’t work. Is there a way to get rid of all those unnecessary folders when browsing your Media Server?

Also, i have a server set up at home and i tried pointing WMP11 to the folders i have shared on it and it didnt work. All your streaming content has to be on your WMP11 pc.

Its a great update. Still mad that access to the xmb is not present during gameply, no custom soundtrack support, and no custom backgrounds. Ps2 upscalling is nice especially in gran turismo4. DVDs look alot better also in 1080i. The media server is awesome. I have gotten it to work nicely. Some internet tv shows work. Only took two minutes to copy 1.19gig mpg4hd rip of clerks in 720p to my ps3 on my network. I want the ability to download stuff from the ps3 to the psp through remote play. that would be wicked. and to tap it ur an ignorant asshole. This is why I stray from posting comments and forums. Too many losers on the net who flame others for asking simple questions even if they seem and are noobish. grow up. Ur acting just like a dumb ass fanboy. I love my ps3 was somewhat disappointed in the abilities but sony is making way with the updates. I still wish they had made the 60bg has 512mb ram for linux sake and and games.

I find it a little odd that nearly all news sites make a big deal out of DVD/PS/PS2 upscaling – a passable feature at best – but fail to even mention Blu-ray downscaling to 720p, a hugely important feature that was sorely missing until this update came along.

u could emulate vista but it would be so fucking slow. vista requires 512mb system ram min and sony doesnt let us have access to the rsx. so vista would look like a system hog version of xp. xp runs perdy good in linux but still once again no vid card support and lack of ram. fucking sony. i would trade my ps3 for a 1gig ps3! even if it was $899 and came with a 160+gig hd too.

Isn’t that a bit sad that you only buy your ps3 just so you can play back-up games? If your gonna return it, return it coz you don’tlike the features or games available, not coz you can’t play copied games. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for mod-chips but I wouldn’t buy a console solely based on the hope that I can use it for illegal business, I’d buy it because it’s a good console and has promising legal features.

As hinted last night in my Blog, several PS3 Debug (also referred to as TEST) Firmware versions have recently been leaked, and tonight we are kicking things off in sharing the latest PS3 v1.80 Debug Firmware with the PS3 community courtesy of a very NiCE but anonymous source! For those wondering, PS3 Debug Firmware allows game testers/reviewers to run both unsigned code and PS3 game images burned to Blu-ray Disc from a PS3 Debug/TEST machine.
