It seems a fellow by the name of “HackITandC” has discovered a simple swap method potentially allowing you to bypass the PS3 firmware check; therefore granting the ability to load/play games which require a later firmware version than what is actually installed on your beloved console. It’s a straight forward approach:

It worked, i have firmware 1.31 and everytime that i was trying to load spiderman 3 it was asking to make an update, i tried the hack and it work.
i did what it was told to do for the hack.

Yea, why should we want to use custom fw on our PS3’s when the BD-disks are more than 50gb!
Also, custom for ps3 is overrated, i can live with it on my PSP but i want to keep my PS3 original, for specific reasons.
name all the bluray disks over 50gb?or over 40gb?or over 30gb?i think a 320gb/500gb hard drive will hold enough games for me!

I did the hack with resistance and moterstorm works ( witch actualy needs 1.50)
So you dont have to update your ps3 firmware to play newer games.

This is interesting… But i don’ t like the whole swap idea… Never did, for any system…. I prefer chip-mods… I have a terra HD and storring blue-ray isos wont be an issue…
its just an exploit which save people UPGRADING theit FW against their will (ie FORCED updated by sony). if/when a loader comes out then you wont have to swap anymore ;-)
I dont think all games take advantage of the spacious 50gb BR Disc, I.e. some games simply do not have enough content to fill up the disk, i would imagine only games like GTA4 and some of the other big ones will use the full 50 GB
GTA4 wont use the hole 50GB because there is also a version for XBOX359 who only use DVD and HD-DVD. I think it will use 20GB-25GB. Actually Games use 7GB up to 17GB.
add: I own only RFOM (PAL). Work the exploit with RFOM (pal) and PS3 european with 1.50?

PS3 FW 1.10 = it worked on my NBA Street Homecourt 100% and that it screen glitched my Def Jam Icon (it plaied but its un-playable with an unfixxable black screen the whole game.)

This will work until a game that takes advantage of an updates features is released.. same scenario as the PSP.
So,wont work on all games.looks like there is something in them updates and not just security fixes.

This was posted a few weeks before your post, BUT thanks for your input. Testing was already in proces before you posted.
Guys I can CONFIRM as an independent person (no links to PDX). That PDX mentioned that game firmware does NOT need to be updated within games. This IS infact true!!. You do NOT need to run game updates on the disk!!!. we are still testing and hopefully more information will slip out in the next few weeks!.
PS: this doesn NOT mean we can load backups yet. BUT it has alot of potential.
It seems to be similar to what pdx are doing in ps3 mode!, BUT we still are not sure what they do in ps2 mode and how they get into ps3 mode!!.
But like i said from WITHIN ps3 mode firmware bypass is being tested. hopefully the next step would be region hacking (but not sure, depends on what the people helping out want to concentrate on)
for now fw1.32 is working well with the firmware exploit!!!

naw sorry dosent work, i think it dosent work is because when you boot up a blu ray game its n blu ray mode and to boot a ps2 it needs ta be in dvd mode,, thats y i think the ps2 game wudnt boot of the blu ray game, otherwise this exploit works good with all ps3 games i hav testd on FW 1.70
WE just need to find a similar exploit for ps2 games, I dont have too many ps2 games to test at the minute. If everyone tried to find similar on ps2 it will work!!

ok (to answer my own question) so i bought RFOM and it turned out i had to upgrade to 1.02 and me being an idiot that night, i did. so then i tried the disc swap trick with Oblivion or whatever that game is called, and it wouldnt do the swap thing and kept showing up as 1.51 required. im thinking that maybe the firmware check bypass only works if all the needed components for whatever game, are present in whatever firmware you’re using. so maybe if a 1.80 game uses the same set of components as a 1.10, then you can do the disc swap thing and it will work. but of course they will be using all the latest features in the newer firmware in games so that it wont just be a number to spoof, it will be a necessary component that has to be installed for the game to work.
now, after upgrading i got a bunch of games i found with copyright dates in 2006, figuring these were all launch titles with lower firmwares. they all seemed to load fine on their own with no swap trick needed so im thinking they were either all 1.02 or they would have maybe run on 1.00, which of course is really pissing me off because i hate upgrading.
