PS3 Firmware Update 1.54 Released

Posted by greg on February 28, 2007

Update: The official FW 1.54 changes, according to Sony… :)

Friends:

  • [Screen Mode] has been added as an option in the options menu for video chat. The image of the person you are chatting with during video chat can now be changed to match the screen size.
  • You can now use a compatible USB camera compliant with USB video class (UVC) for video chat.

I just booted up my PS3 to realize that a new firmware update is now available — version 1.54. Although the details have yet to be announced on the official PlayStation site, you can bet they’ve strengthened something. Nonetheless, stay tuned for updates.

Remember — the implications after upgrading are unknown at this time. If you choose to upgrade you may render your PS3 incapable of utilizing any known, or unknown, vulnerabilities.

Well, they got it out just in time to prevent me from buying Tekken 5 from the PS store. Good job Sony. Cause there’s no way I’m doing firmwares again, unless I’m sure the ISO seen won’t pan out, which it looks like it’ll more than pan out, judging by what all is starting to come out.

This is Straight BullShit from SONY….. They know as well as we do that this update is not really for “Screen Mode” and “USB CAM” only…. They should release the complete specs of everything that the Update does……

According to Kotaku, some modders are experiencing problems where the PS3 refuses to boot up on an upgraded HD:

Anyone care to try this out and confirm if this is / is not the case? :)

Damn guys. why so many people angry about these updates. of course these updates try to stop hacks. why the hell would any company trying to make money not do so. if you dont like it dont update! Im a supporter for hacking but you cant blame Sony for trying to stop them. sheesh.

Beware European PS3 soon-to-be owners, the PS3 has locked out PAL/NTSC DVDs even if they are region free or homemade. So if you have NTSC discs and live in a PAL land, even though you may be hooked up to an LCD or plasma display, Sony will prevent playback. Same happens with PAL discs in the US.

Use linux on your PS3 to play your DVD’s if they’re from out of your region.
