CJPC has released an incredibly useful application for the PS3 using the OtherOS Open Platform concept. PS3 Swiss Army Knife (SAK), appropriately titled, provides a web interface that enables the following:
Note: With SAK v1.00 you can now dump your PS3/Blu-Ray disc images without installing PS3 Linux, however, you must still format the PS3 HDD prior (as if you were going to install PS3 Linux) in order to install/use the OtherOS– this is a $ony requirement unfortunately.
How to install: using a memory or USB stick, or CD-R, etc… Copy “otheros.bld” (included in the RAR archive) & “otheros.self” (see below) to “/PS3/OTHEROS/”. Insert your removable media and from the XMB (Settings -> System Settings) run “Install Other OS.” Set the default boot to OtherOS, reboot, and you should be good to go.

Like you I was panicking as I couldn’t get the default PS3 OS to boot but the solution is this – switch off at the back, switch back on again but hold down the I/O button on the front for approx 5 seconds till you hear a beep, thats the reset. The PS3 will then boot the standard PS3 OS.

Doesn’t work for me. I have lastest firmware. Then Just now i tried this. I follow step by step then i cant go to my default OS. I tried to hold the button already. Turn off the main switch then turn on then pressing the power button and wont let it go its still wont reset but go to the application. Sometimes it turn on and off while i wont let go the IO button HELP!!! OK do i need to install the ubuntu first? I realize that i just put the otheros then install itself then run it on my PS3. Then its get stuck in that menu where u suppose to put the letter to choose where u enter by a keyboard. I don have the keyboard for that. And again i tried to turn off by holding the power but no response. It sometimes do off then on again like a second. but it doesn’t run the reset setting. Help please. My current firmware is 2.80. I try to take out the harddisk try to backup my data but i realize that i cant do that. Then i put the HD in then it cant run so i restrore the system like it was asked then formatting. After that the same thing also happen it still goes to the SAK not the sony one. By this point i believe that my save data all r save. Then one more question do i really have to get the PSP keyboard to put the input?

Sony has allowed us to the PS3 feature wise, to letting us installing the Windows XP, Linux (another different kind of OS(operating sytem) nor any other kinds of competible OS that may exist. You can install an OS within your PS3’s hard drive and use the OS that way. i mean rather than from a straight a PC, the PS3 is your brand new PC
instead of installing an OS within the ps3, people are creating a program to taking advantage of the “Other OS” to do something else.

Turn the PS3 off by using the hard reset button in the back, then switch it back on. The LED light will be red. Hold the front power button on until you hear a second beep or about proximately five seconds. There you go, problem fixed.
i figured it out… system software can be forcibly booted up even when an “Other OS” has been selected as ｢Default System」by holding down the Power button for about 5 seconds or more at power on,

Guys, as he said, backup your iso’s and wait for loader, i also wanna backup my original cd’s but its not this right time to do so =)), i wanna finish the games i have first, then once the loaders released, we will rock and roll ^^, all games will be open as iso, just like in PSP, use this programe wisley to make Iso’s and send them to your pc using network, in a backup file. then get ur psp OS back to like it was and go on playing games, once loaders comes, reinstall this OTHEROS and enjoy running all games, the once u had and the downloaded games from torrents.

Q. What do I do with the ISO file now?
A. Use winrar and create an archive with the iso file. Use STORE COMPRESSION, then use SPLIT INTO VOLUMES and select CD700: 700MB (I know it sounds strange, but just trust me) hit okay, and let your pc do its magic for about 8-10 hours. Now burn each seperate archive to a CD, then delete the original. Use NERO 8 to burn your cd’s as NERO 7 doesn’t support Blu-Ray CD Images. Congratulations. You have now officially backed-up your Blu-Ray Disc to CD-R. Now put all of the CD’s away in a safe place and wait for the ISO loader to come out. Then Simply copy the contents of all the CD’s you made onto your computer, and extract the ISO file.
If there are any more questions, you should probably not be attempting to even use a PS3, and should promptly go buy a Nintendo Wii instead.

So… the PS3 will not see NTFS HDD’s?
I beleive .aa .ab .ac files are a form of file compression from a linux program. If i’m right you will have to figure out the following. And just FYI if this does work, then it will probably only work for the BD’s not the game rips.
1.) Make an extra partition on your hard drive and load linux on it making your system a dual boot system.
2.) find the software for linux that can read and extract the source files from the .aa .ab .ac files.
3.) once these files are extracted and have made an iso file either put that iso file onto a thumb drive or external harddrive.
4.) reboot your system and boot back into windows.
5.) find a program which you can alter .iso’s with (i prefer poweriso) and rip the data from the .iso onto your hdd
6.) convert the data to .h264
If this works then cool if not then oh well but it’s worth a shot.
oh and not to mention if this copies the disk 100% then the movies will have some form of copyright protection copied onto the disk also.
So if this method does work you’ll also need to get Slysoft’s Anydvd/hd. So you can read the data once it’s ripped onto your computer. Otherwise the copy protection will probably keep you from gettign anything further

Here is a concept, do some research and fully plan out what you want to do before going and fucking with a 500 dollargaming system. And just and FYI, no you can’t play backed up PS3 games, no your PS3 will not take the place of you mommy’s teet, no matter how big of tube you use the PS3 can not be hacked or modified to fit up your ass, and the main power switch is in the back.
Before I install this thing, and possibly wipe my hard drive clean of my precious save files, does it play ISO images? It says it can back up, but If I have an image already on my comp, and transfer it to the ps3, can I play off the image with this program?

I can get SAK to send my BD iso to network share no prob but takes a long time (probably my network).
I am trying to get SAK to EXT3 but having problems. Using GPARTED LIVE and get usb drive setup but GP shows it is mounted as /dev/sdc1 and it is the only partition on the drive. PS3 sees it as /dev/sdc.
I know I am missing something in regards to setting up my drive correctly. Any help or suggestions?
Please help me guys, if the ps3 can only use FAT32 external harddrives-how do you back up a game over 4GB? I have heard that FAT32 can not hold files above 4GB. I have a one TB external harddrive which is NTFS. To use SAK do I need to format it to FAT32 and will the .iso’s definatly show up?

super_js: FAT32 is limited to 2gb files. So yes, if PS3 is limited to using FAT formatted external hard drives, than you will not be able to have the ISO on them without using compression (zip/rar) to archive the ISO and split it into volumes that fit the restrictions (ex. CD format 700mb).

I had a external WD 250 GB harddrive that I didn’t use very much. I was thinking if it would work internally in the PS3 so I broke open the case and installed it in my PS3. It worked but when I went to system info it only shows 205 GB’s. I contacted sony and they told me that the PS3 uses about 18 GB’s of space and for the rest of the missing space they told me to load 30 gigs of music and then delete it. They said it would free up the rest. I will let you know later if it works
If there is a real ISO Loader, I would be involved to try it if someone will have the kindness to send it to my email.

Can you move an ISO from your PC to the PS3 using the network feature? If so then moving them from the PS3 to your PC for safe keeping is as great thing to do now in case a loader is released all will be worth while and the PS3 will become a dream system for all of us who just want or (if disabled) need the ability to switch games without leaving our seat. Thank you guys for your hard work.

Do u ppl not read at ALL??!!?!?!?!?!?!? The loader was bullsh*t! If u r gonna take the time to place programs on ur PS3 that could potentially harm it would u at least do u or ur parents wallet a service and read All of these posts so u don’t screw up or get screwed. U really need to read all of this so u don’t sit in the dark thinking “what do i do now?” And for those who can afford another PS3 just read it so u stop asking DUMB questions that have been answered like 15 times!

I’ve been looking at this feature on Wordpress blogs for ages and wishing Blogger would implement it. Followed your instructions and it works a treat!
I’m sorry because I did not read everything so this might be covered already.
I have firmware 2.76 and it says “There is no partition for installing.. (etc)” and “If this system must be installed on the hard disk, you will need to create partition” .. I have used it without creating a partition since if does not require one.
I don’t know is this because it starts telling about “killing” and looping. Only pressing power button will help after that.
For those who say “kb works with ps3 but not with SAK” .. unplug and replug it. You need better kb if that does not work.
For those who complain that power button does not work: get it repaired or try pressing several seconds longer. This is hardcoded feature from Sony.
PS3 hard disk is not browsable. It recognizes only some 4 mega (or I remember size incorrectly :) ) space and my usb stick.
BR game/video disks are browsable.
PS3 PAL, 80G version.

I am working on a loader (RipLODE)…it’s in alpha stage right now. I have street fighter iv backup working, but it does have some audio glitches. GTA IV works perfect so far, Killzone 2 works for about 10 minutes then freezes. That’s all I have tested so far. I would like alpha testers to give me feedback.
