Remember the Wipeout Pure “hidden browser” hack for the PSP? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t; in any case, this method to circumvent the PS3 firmware check works in a similar manner by hijacking DNS requests and redirecting you elsewhere. The concept is actually quite simple… Once setup (follow the instructions below) PS3 traffic will be directed to our server which hosts modified files to report back firmware 0.00.
These are the steps I took (on my Intel Mac using DarwinPorts):
The same can be achieved on a Linux or Windows box using the same tool, ettercap-NG — grab the appropriate version here. With Windows you’ll also need WinPcap.
So, with that said and done, you can now:

You do not need to hack ps3 to have linux on it, ps3 is homebrew friendly ;). At this current point updating to whatever version they will release doesn’t matter. Paradox is working on something big present and the FW won’t matter once its released. ATM updating fixes a lot of the launch bugs, if you like a freezing console and bad aspect ratio on 1080i TV and other flaws like in ps2 emulation be my guest ;) I sure don’t want to live with that crap… and if PSP is any hint in terms of firmware update the version won’t matter once ps3 is hacked like a little whore. From my experience with psp scene from day 1 its only a matter of time until we’re flooded with apps for the ps3 by the hackign community ;)
Although it may fix certain ps3 problems, it’s also possible that it may unleash rampant pirating like with the psp. That is very bad! If you want the ps3 to come out with more good games and get better sales I would caution against that. Plus all the problems you named can be fixed by sony if enough people complain about it…

just got my ps3 60 gb today.. hooked it up using the supplied AV cables but it won’t give me sound nor vision (just as is nothing is connected to the tv). But the led’s seem to function properly and the BD-drive is ok .. any ideas what’s wrong ? cuz i’m so unhappy now
had this happen to me as well, come to find out the graphic display was set to another format, ie HDMI. When I hooked this up thru my DVI to DVI monitor I went to the settings and had it automatically sence which display I had it on. Now my TV is a 46″ LCD with HDMI and thats what I’m hooked to now.

You guys suck on here. People asking for help. For instance i could load up my linux box and do this, but im on my windows pc at the moment and would like to get it running on that. There is no (per say) terminal in windows. (unless you mean command prompt) And then there wont be the same file structure as linux or mac!
So i have ettercap and there modified dns file. Somehow you still need to make the ps3 go through your pc somehow? I dont see how that part was mentioned.
And just because i dont know how that part works yet doesn’t mean i wont be able to do the rest of what needs to be done. I already have YDL loaded and running on a standard ntsc screen. I can already back up images. Blocking updates and loading iso’s would be the next great step.
Hope some non ass can give some more info for the windows/linux people.
ok so heres what i did for bypassing the FW check on windows xp
1) Download the SimpleDNS software from http://www.simpledns.com/download.aspx
2) Run SimpleDNS (you don’t have to reboot despite the installer telling you to..), click on the Records button
3) In the records window, click on Tools > Quick Domain Wizard
4) for domain name enter: ps3.update.playstation.net
for Web server IP enter 67.15.88.46
delete the Secondary DNS name entry, you do not need it
5) Now that you have your new server added, you need to add A Name entries so the ps3 gets redirected on the firmware requests, to do this simply right click and choose New Host Address (A-Record)
6) we need to add two A-Name entries, depending on what region you are in. You can add as many as you’d like if you want to cover your bases though
For the us, we need fus01.ps3.update.playstation.net and dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net
So, In the host address window, enter
fus01.ps3.update.playstation.net for Record name, and 67.15.88.46 for IP Address, set the Time To Live to 999 days.
Repeat the same step but instead put dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net as host adress with the same days and ip address.
On your playstation 3, go into internet settings and enter manual setup and set your PS3’s DNS server entry for the IP of the pc on your lan which is running SimpleDNS
in the mayority of the cases the ip should be 192.168.2.2 if theres only one pc conected to the router if not try changing the last digit until it works leave the secondary dns empty.
remember you have to be conected in both the pc and ps3 at the same time and simpledns must be open, would be more convinient if all windows are closed.
Do you have to have the pc connected directly or can it also be connected to the router wirelessly.
does this work on 1.32 , or must i upgrade to 1.50, i heard thats what u have to do, but why would u do that , if the loader does not go that high, the only way to realy bypass it, is if the ps3 was like the 3.11 oe custom firmware, so if u are a dumb ass that upgrades knowing it can ruin ur chances of loading ur own iso back ups ;) then dont ask for a downgrader.

No it was because I was sudo’ing then running it.
When I ran it as root it worked, basically sudo bash’ing first stopped the error.

hey B4tm4n, i have the same prob that you described. can you help me out a bit? im a little fuzzy on the “etter.dns” thing cuz when i got the file it was a .txt so i changed it to a .dns and replaced as told to (i hope that was right). in any case, i still get the same error. ive tried entering the “ettercap -T -Q -M arp -i en0 // // -P dns_spoof” command in the terminal root and after i changed directories (not sudo’ing though), but i get the same “error 9″ message. care to shed a little light for me?
spoiler- I used the code from the text file, it worked, then about an hour later it said evaluation period exceeded, I tried the code again and it said that it was invalid, please help!!!!!!

Had the exact same problem with Simple DNS, do yourself a favor and uninstall it.
I used Posadis DNS server instead, works great (PS STORE and PLAYING ONLINE ) . (I’m running 1.50) http://posadis.sourceforge.net/
Had some problems with it at first too but eventually got it to work :D
Can you post the general steps you used to set it up using the Posadis Dns program?
Create a new E-mail at Hotmail , Google or whatever you prefer. Post it here and i will e-mail you the exact way i got it working.
