March 1.6 Firmware Update

Posted by greg on February 11, 2007

I’ve been waiting for this since the North American release day — background downloading! It’s reported that firmware update 1.6, available come March, will include the ability to download PlayStation Store items in the background while doing whatever else on your PS3. Multi-tasking, ooooooh yeaaaah!

GI: Well, it was very important, especially for me. There was all of this talk about the big update when the console hits Europe in March. You mentioned today, background downloads. Will that be part of it, and what are some of the other things that you have planned for that?

Harrison: The only thing I can talk about is that background downloading will be part of the 1.6 upgrade. There’s a bunch of other stuff, but Kawanishi-san would kill me if I was to reveal all of the details.

One can only hope MP3s will be playable while in-game too. *sigh*

iso’s suck anyway i wouldnt want to waste all the space for 1 game on my ps3 or pc so i cant put the one i buy away in a safe place.

the ps3 isnt like the psp each game for psp is only about 1 gig and a half maximum i seen,

ps3 will be way past it, 7-8 gigs is what some games are right now for the ps3.

Iso loaders don’t work now. Iso loaders are not worth sacrificing online play. Why spend $600 on a console and then be too cheap to buy the games?
This update will definitely bring some positive features to a system that needs it. After March, this system will be in a great place..new games, new abilities…yikes.

Maybe because we have no money left after spending that much?

Will the background downloading be for the browser and the PS store or just the the PS store?

probly just for the store i have 1.51 and i dont know if its new on this upgrade but you can already use the web browser while listening to music. when ur playing the song just hit the ps button and it will take u back to the menu then go to the web browser press x and bam ur using the browser while listen to music. if u wanna change the song repeat the step and when u go back to the browser it will be where u left off.

A little of toppic here… Has any1 got snes9x working on their ps3. I have Yellow Dog Linux 5 (the one made for the Ps3), and I think i have the correct files and of course I have roms, but when I enter the command “snes9x XROM.smc” It prompts an error in the Gnome terminal…. Anyways, I think the video thats here on YOUTUBE is running Yellow Dog Linux 4, and thats why his works….. ANy Thoughts?????

I have the same exact files he has… I even used the chrono.smc rom, but to no avail.. I went and bought a wireless mouse and a USB keyboard in order to run some emulators and nothing… Also, the Yellow Dog linux i have installed needs an excessive amount of plugins which I cannot find anywhere… I cant watch movies or listen to music on it.. Im a Linux Noob so I’ll Keep workin on it.,,

I wouldn’t update to 1.6…not yet at least! It has been confirmed that PARRADOX ISO LOADER works on 1.50 & 1.51 fws…for the time being. Also it will be released in late March or begininh of April when the European PS3 comes out. So, if you want to play backups, don’t update! :)
Cheers to all of you!
