PS3 Firmware Update 1.54 Released

Posted by greg on February 28, 2007

Update: The official FW 1.54 changes, according to Sony… :)

Friends:

  • [Screen Mode] has been added as an option in the options menu for video chat. The image of the person you are chatting with during video chat can now be changed to match the screen size.
  • You can now use a compatible USB camera compliant with USB video class (UVC) for video chat.

I just booted up my PS3 to realize that a new firmware update is now available — version 1.54. Although the details have yet to be announced on the official PlayStation site, you can bet they’ve strengthened something. Nonetheless, stay tuned for updates.

Remember — the implications after upgrading are unknown at this time. If you choose to upgrade you may render your PS3 incapable of utilizing any known, or unknown, vulnerabilities.

A New PS3 Proxy App for Windows

Posted by greg on February 27, 2007

A much simpler PS3 Proxy app is now available from 3r1c. This is a great alternative to CF3B5’s proxy server. Essentially both operate in the same fashion — allowing you to install downloadable PlayStation Store titles, games and/or demos, via your PC — but now you have a choice! ;)

PS3 Proxy Screenshot

Although, PS3 Proxy definitely has its advantages…

  • No need to reconfigure your PC’s IP address.
  • No installation — just run the supplied executable.
  • No need to download PKG files to the PC; PS3 Proxy will redirect the download to the correct URL entered.
  • No need to download 1% and then cancel; PS3 Proxy will intercept the download automatically.

Very simple!

Thanks FRAK!

PS3 SAK (Swiss Army Knife) v1.00

Posted by greg on February 26, 2007

CJPC has released an incredibly useful application for the PS3 using the OtherOS Open Platform concept. PS3 Swiss Army Knife (SAK), appropriately titled, provides a web interface that enables the following:

  • Check Blu-Ray Disk size
  • Format internal PS3 HDD
  • Back-up iSO to internal PS3 HDD
  • Back-up iSO to external EXT3 HDD
  • Back-up iSO via wired network, to Windows Network Share
  • Explore HDD (Linux side), and download files to a PC.
  • Explore Blu-Ray Disks, and download files to a PC (with UDF 2.5 Support!)
  • Reboot console
  • Reboot console to PS3 GameOS
  • Poweroff console

Note: With SAK v1.00 you can now dump your PS3/Blu-Ray disc images without installing PS3 Linux, however, you must still format the PS3 HDD prior (as if you were going to install PS3 Linux) in order to install/use the OtherOS– this is a $ony requirement unfortunately.

How to install: using a memory or USB stick, or CD-R, etc… Copy “otheros.bld” (included in the RAR archive) & “otheros.self” (see below) to “/PS3/OTHEROS/”. Insert your removable media and from the XMB (Settings -> System Settings) run “Install Other OS.” Set the default boot to OtherOS, reboot, and you should be good to go.

If you require further assistance, have a look at Sony’s official Open Platform web site.

You can fetch the PS3 OtherOS Installer (otheros.self) here.

Install PlayStation Store PS3 Games via PC!

Posted by greg on February 25, 2007

Update: CF3B5 has released an English version of PS3.ProxyServer for those having difficulties with the previous Chinese version. Grab it below.

Good news today… Paradox released the first PS3 game download from the online PlayStation Store — GripShift!

Quoted from the nfo:

| We bring you another first, the very first PS Store release! |
| This release is playable on the PS3. Use PS3.ProxyServer |
| by CF3B5 to load. |

Currently there are only two reported working titles using this proxy installer method, those are GripShift and Go Sudoku. Perhaps details on how to get the others working will be available soon.

Here’s a forum thread with what you need to know…

Bypass the PS3 Firmware Check

Posted by greg on February 20, 2007

Remember the Wipeout Pure “hidden browser” hack for the PSP? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t; in any case, this method to circumvent the PS3 firmware check works in a similar manner by hijacking DNS requests and redirecting you elsewhere. The concept is actually quite simple… Once setup (follow the instructions below) PS3 traffic will be directed to our server which hosts modified files to report back firmware 0.00.

These are the steps I took (on my Intel Mac using DarwinPorts):

  1. Open a terminal window
  2. Type “cd /opt/local/var/db/dports/sources/
    rsync.rsync.darwinports.org_dpupdate_dports/net/ettercap-ng”
  3. Open “Portfile” and add “–enable-plugins” to configure.args. Save & exit.
  4. Type “sudo port -v install ettercap-ng”
  5. If everything installed fine — proceed…
  6. Grab this file and replace “/opt/local/share/ettercap/etter.dns” with it
  7. Boot your PS3, ensure it’s connected to the network
  8. Start ettercap by typing “ettercap -T -Q -M arp -i en0 // // -P dns_spoof”
(replace ‘en0′ with whatever network interface you’re using)
  9. Wait a few seconds and try going to the PlayStation Store — that’s that.

The same can be achieved on a Linux or Windows box using the same tool, ettercap-NG — grab the appropriate version here. With Windows you’ll also need WinPcap.

So, with that said and done, you can now:

  • play PS3 games online without updating
  • browse the PlayStation Store without updating

Very cool stuff!

Blu-Ray Movies on PS3 w/o Disc!

Posted by greg on February 15, 2007

You may have seen this video on YouTube…

To go along with the video is a semi-tedious tutorial courtesy of “hacked2123″ –

Since most of us don’t have bluray drives for our PC we have PS3 to aid us in our backup process.

This is the complete guide step-per-step:

    1. Boot into Linux
    2. Insert the Blu-ray movie you wish to backup
    3. Ctrl+Esc - Type “Terminal” (or click the terminal)
    (3.5 Connect your external hard-drive)
    4. Type “dd if=\dev\cdrom of=\imagename.img”
    (4.5 Type “dd if=\dev\cdrom of=\mnt\sdc\imagename.img”
    5. When this completes transfer the file
(5.1 My way for step 5 above. Remove the external drive.)
    (5.2 Download and install Ext2FS)
(5.3 Check enable write support for ext2/3)
(5.4 Run Ext2Mgr and in the drop-down menu “Tools” selective “Service Management” click the “Start” button)
(5.5 Right click the ext2/3 partition on your external hard-drive and click “Change Drive Letter” then click the “Add” button and select a letter, not a # )
(5.6 Goto “My Computer” the drive should be there now if not try refresh (F5) )
    6. Install and run any version of IsoBuster
    7. File - -> “Open Image File”
    8. Create a directory somewhere on your PC. Inside that directory create a folder named BDMV. Inside of that directory create the folder stream)
    9. From IsoBuster drag and drop the AACS folder to your 1st new directory.
    10. Inside of BDMV - - > Stream copy which/all of the files located on the bluray image’s corresponding directory
    (11. Install the Java Runtime on your PC. Navigate to “C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_11\bin” (or the like) copy client, paste client, and rename it server) )
    12. Extract BackupBluRayv021
    13. Right-click CPSKey.cfg - - > Open with…
13.5 Copy and paste the Volume Unique Key then type “=” then the title of the movie then type ” |00\00\00|” then copy and paste the CPS Unit Key
13.9 Don’t forget to save it
    14. Windows_BTN+R (run) - type cmd.exe
    15. Drag and drop BackupBluRay.cmd into cmd then type ” “(space) the location you create (you can drag and drop it) then type ” “(space) type the destination (try C:\)

Can’t say we didn’t see this coming… Simply awesome! Thanks FRAK.

Blu-Ray Processing Keys Extracted

Posted by greg on February 13, 2007

A hacker by the name of Arnezami has successfully cracked Blu-Ray AACS-locked discs…

Arnezami, a hacker on the Doom9 forum, has published a crack for extracting the “processing key” from a high-def DVD player. This key can be used to gain access to every single Blu-Ray and HD-DVD disc.

Previously, another Doom9 user called Muslix64 had broken both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD by extracting the “volume keys” for each disc, a cumbersome process. This break builds on Muslix64’s work but extends it — now you can break all AACS-locked discs.

That didn’t take too long…

View the details of Arnezami’s discovery by clicking here. Nice job. ;)

March 1.6 Firmware Update

Posted by greg on February 11, 2007

I’ve been waiting for this since the North American release day — background downloading! It’s reported that firmware update 1.6, available come March, will include the ability to download PlayStation Store items in the background while doing whatever else on your PS3. Multi-tasking, ooooooh yeaaaah!

GI: Well, it was very important, especially for me. There was all of this talk about the big update when the console hits Europe in March. You mentioned today, background downloads. Will that be part of it, and what are some of the other things that you have planned for that?

Harrison: The only thing I can talk about is that background downloading will be part of the 1.6 upgrade. There’s a bunch of other stuff, but Kawanishi-san would kill me if I was to reveal all of the details.

One can only hope MP3s will be playable while in-game too. *sigh*

FERROX v1.0 PS3 iSO Loader?!

Posted by greg on February 4, 2007

Watch this!

Apparently a well-known developer by the name of naoneo is working on her very own PS3 ISO Loader — FERROX! She has released a video demonstrating its supposed authenticity… Nothing more has surfaced for the moment, but on a brighter note, it is reported to work on ALL firmware versions — up to 1.51; thanks to a security vulnerability in the PS3’s Hypervisor.

Again, this should be treated as pure speculation, at least until something concrete and usable is released to the public. Nevertheless — time well tell!
