PS3 Sixaxis Controller Used in Windows

Posted by greg on January 25, 2007

wraggster, over at dcemu, has posted instructions on how to get the PS3 Sixaxis controller functioning in Windows. Download the rar archive below and follow these simple steps:

  1. Download and install the filter driver (libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe).
  2. Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.exe
  3. Plug the SIXAXIS into your PC.
  4. Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once.
  5. Push the PS button on the SIXAXIS once if it doesn’t see it straight away.

To confirm it working:

  1. Browse to Control Panel and select Game Controllers
  2. Choose the PLAYSTATION3 controller and click on Properties
  3. Press the controller buttons & see the effect on the screen.

Cool, huh? It’s recommended Windows XP or higher.

Thanks for the email RB.

Firmware 1.50 Out Now

Posted by greg on January 23, 2007

Update (24-01-07): It has been officially announced on the Playstation website. You’ll now find the download and updated change log below…

Update (24-01-07): As anticipated PS3 firmware 1.50 is now available — for both Japanese and North America. You can fetch it via Network Update.

Apparently the Japanese will bear witness to PS3 firmware 1.50 tomorrow. It wouldn’t surprise me if it hits North America as well; same day or shortly after. Here’s what’s new (sorry for the loose translation):

Users

  • You can now select an image to use as the User icon from [Photo].

Settings

  • [Key Tone] has been added as an option under [Sound Settings].
  • [Delete Backup Data] has been added as an option under [System Settings] > [Backup Utility].
  • WEP 128, WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA-PSK (AES) have been added as security methods that can be used with [AOSS™] under [Automatic].*
    * If you have already set up for AOSS using an earlier version of the system software, you must perform AOSS setup again to use the security methods listed above.
    * When [Automatic] is selected, the security method to be used is automatically set.
    * AOSS is a trademark of Buffalo, Inc.

Friends

  • The method for saving your password / signing in automatically under PLAYSTATION®Network has been changed. There are now two separate options.

Other

  • You can now enter text in Korean using the on-screen keyboard.

When can I listen to my own mp3 tracks during game play?!

Thanks for the email FRAK.

Fight Night Round 3 Formulas

Posted by greg on January 21, 2007

I’m a huge Fight Night [Round 3] fanatic… Whether it be for the 360, PSP, or PS3, I will kick your ass. Now, I’m well aware this isn’t a hack, but it’s damn cool that this guy actually took the time to compile a website with formulas (and screenshots) to easily create your own custom boxers.

I was actually on the hunt for something resembling Rocky Balboa and I landed on this site. It has Rocky plus many other fictional and non-fictional greats, including random celebrities, UFC fighters, and of course some of the top boxers — Mike Tyson, Sonny Liston, George Forman, Rocky Marciano, etc…

Michael Jackson Fight Night Round 3

Can you guess who that is? ;)

In any case, I figured I would share this site (see source link) with you. I’ve confirmed these formulas do in fact work on the PS3 version also (even though it says Xbox360).

Enjoy!

Turn your PS3 into a PVR

Posted by greg on January 17, 2007

Easily turn your PS3 into a personal video recorder using Linux and the Plextor ConvertX DVR TV402U. MythTV, the homebrew PVR project, works great under PS3 Linux using GO7007 Video4Linux2 driver with the provided patches.

Patches:

GO7007 driver lacks compat ioctl routines for 32bit userland/64bit kernel configuration. And Video4Linux2’s compat-ioctl32.c seems quite incomplete. These patches fix the problem on PS3 Linux. Not yet tested well, it just works for me.

  • ps3-go7007.patch: Patch against wis-go7007-linux-0.9.8.tar.bz2.
  • ps3-compat-ioctl32.patch: Patch against linux-20061208.tar.bz2.

Of course, there’s no problem with ppc64 userland on ppc64 kernel.

PS2 Backups on the PS3!

Posted by greg on January 15, 2007

Here is a video demonstrating the possibility of booting PS2 backups on the PS3 running firmware 1.10 with SwapMagic 3.6. Its been confirmed this method does not work on the latest 1.31 update.

First take the torx bolt out slide the face plate off and remove few phillips screws. Take the metal cover off the top of the bd drive. Then remove the top plastic cover and unplug the sensor. Secure it down with a couple screws. Then cut a circle (with a plastic cutting saw bit) on the top cover. Your face plate now slides back over to allow swapping and still keeping the PS3 looking clean.

Boot the PS2 DVD and wait for it to load. Now hold the PS button and quit the game. Slide your cover back and push down on the disk secure magnet. It will stop the laser, but not the spinning. swap disks and press circle(jp) X to boot your backup.

Swapmagic is only needed for PAL conversion and CD backups.

Ah… The good ol’ switch-a-roo trick. The video isn’t the greatest of quality (bad lighting), but apparently it works.

Thanks for the email FRAK.

Update on the PS3 Hyperdrive

Posted by greg on January 12, 2007

Team Xecuter has posted an update with regard to their PS3 Hyperdrive. The design is finished; however, there’s no mention of a scheduled release date yet. Looking at the image below, I truly hope this doesn’t prevent you from standing the PS3 vertically…

PS3 Hyperdrive

The PS3 Hyperdrive is aimed towards maximizing your storage capacity and minimizing your hard drive costs. Cool concept.

It features:

  1. Supports 2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA HDD (Also working on built in IDE support)
  2. Switch for SATA HDD (2.5″/3.5″) w/ LED
  3. Switch for select output interface for PC (SATA or USB) w/ LED
  4. Special SATA female(Hyperdrive) to Male(PS3) connecter with custom plug-lock design, easy install and just plug and lock.
  5. Release lock button for disconnecting Hyperdrive with PS3
  6. Molex power source input.
  7. Easy to install HDD inside the HyperDrive.
  8. Built-in cooling fan.

If you’re looking for an alternative solution to attach your 3.5″ SATA drive, see this article.

Gran Turismo HD Concept v1.1

Posted by greg on January 12, 2007

Hey! I just received this email from the PlayStation Underground:

Our records indicate that you downloaded Gran Turismo HD Concept from the PLAYSTATION(R)Store. Version 1.1 is now available for download, which refines the gameplay experience in Time Trial mode and the accuracy of lap times within the online rankings. Since online ranking results recorded by version 1.1 players will be given priority, it is highly recommended that you download and install it if you are playing the earlier version.
Please note that version 1.1 is compatible with existing game save data, allowing you to race your previously unlocked cars.

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and hope you enjoy Gran Turismo HD Concept.

Sincerely,
The PlayStation Underground

That was nice of them to send out a notification. That sweet, sweet 1080p goodness. Very cool!

PS3 “Lunavader” Released

Posted by greg on January 7, 2007

Sony’s PS3 open-platform concept is proving to be pretty cool… rerofumi has released a modified boot cd which when loaded using the “Other OS” boot loader allows you to play the homebrew game, “Lunavader.”

This is accomplished without actually installing Linux on your PS3’s hard disk. You will however have to install the “Other OS” loader and create the corresponding HDD partition. Manual available here.

Once that is complete the rest is straight forward: download the ISO image below, burn it, insert it, and boot the “Other OS.” You will require a USB keyboard connected in order to proceed.

To return back to the PS3 XMB, type “boot-game-os” at the kboot prompt.
i.e.) kboot: boot-game-os <press enter>

Download: Lunavader

Thanks for the tip wraggster.

PS3 Linux and an Xbox360 Controller

Posted by greg on January 4, 2007

diabolix has successfully compiled an Xbox 360 controller driver for Fedora Core 5. What exactly does this mean? Well if you’re running linux on your PS3 you can now use your wired Xbox360 controller with it! Its been tested with Snes9x and Doom under FC5-PPC.

Copy this installer to your PS3’s HDD linux partition and connect your controller via USB. Run “install-xbox360-driver.sh” initially from the terminal, enter your root password (if you aren’t root already), and viola — a functioning Xbox360 controller on your PS3!

Very cool, diabolix!

PS3 3.5″ SATA HDD Mod

Posted by greg on January 3, 2007

Here’s a clever method to replace the existing 20GB/60GB 2.5″ PS3 HDD with a 3.5″ SATA drive. As you may, or may not know, 3.5″ SATA drives are usually much larger (capacity-wise) and faster; not to mention cheaper.

If you’re like me, my 60GB PS3 does not have the storage capacity that I require. I am running Yellow Dog Linux and I’m going to need more room on the HD for installs and files that I want locally. That little 10GB partition the PS3 XMB is using is going quick; all those demos and videos that the Sony store is dumping is really beginning to add up. Not only that, what about my music and PS1 downloads for the PSP.

The PS3’s HDD bay only fits a 2.5″ drive — you need an external HDD case to accommodate the new 3.5″ disk. Something similar to the one you see below.

PS3 HDD Case

Modification requirements:

  1. Your brain (or a borrowed one from a monkey).
  2. Enough of #1 to figure out how to remove the OEM HDD
  3. 1 medium Phillips screw driver.
  4. 1 3.5″ SATA HDD
  5. 1 3.5″ SATA HDD enclosure. Like the one above
  6. 1 Male SATA 7-Pin DATA to Female SATA 7-Pin Cable.
  7. You may need a set of needle nose pliers or a pair of snips.

To see instructions (with photos) click the source link below. Nice job, Gudrun.
