An interesting thread over on the official Playstation board with regard to graphical glitches on the PS3 when playing certain PS2 titles… It primarily affects games which are only capable of outputting at 480i.
I decided to start this thread because many of my PS2 games were looking horrible on my HDTV when played through the PS3. The games look fantastic when I play them via component from my PS2. So I used the SAME component cable on my PS3, kept the picture adjustments the same, and even set the PS3’s output resolution to 480i to emulate what the PS2 was doing. Here are my results on the SAME TV. Since I am setting up my PS3 to the SAME conditions that my PS2 outputs, I do not believe this is a TV issue as some here have asserted. Sony thus far has played dumb when we call them. Look at the screen caps below and you decide.
The screen shots do in fact show considerable differences. This may provide some insight for anyone else experiencing the same problem.
See the full thread here.
Thanks for the email Steve.

I have yet to see these glitches, but then again I still don’t have a HDTV.
hopefully sont will make an update that will change this if it is true
I do have an HDTV with HDMI support and I see this problem. It makes ps2 games that don’t have greater than 480i support look so bad they’re unplayable. Tekken 5 is the only one that looks decent but I’m waiting anxiously for the Dark Resurrection. This is the the only thing that I can say I’m disappointed with on my PS3. When theres so few games to play on the PS3 wouldn’t it be wise for there to be good backwards compatibility?
Of course it’s true. That’d take way too much photoshoping and collaboration to fake.
who cares? Play ps3 games.
i havent noticed them but the ps2 games look alot better on the ps3 so even if there is a defect, i still rather play it on the ps3
