PS3 Firmware 1.31 Update

Posted by greg on December 13, 2006

Update: Finally — Sony has announced the release of 1.31.

What’s the diff?

Game:

  • You can now play PlayStation®2 format software titles that must be installed on the hard disk.

Other:

Update: I can confirm that it does not properly upscale a 720p-only title (i.e. Fight Night Round 3) to 1080i; providing your current output resolution is set to 1080i with no 720p support. It will continue downscaling to 480i or 480p.

There’s no mention of it on the official Sony PS3 site; however, system software update 1.31 is now available for download via “Network Update.” I’m just grabbing it myself — check back to see what’s new/changed. Hopefully it corrects the whole downscaling issue for the older HDTV sets incapable of displaying at 720p.

I only just got my PS3 yesterday and had to update it to 1.30, and now I have to update it to 1.31 already!
This better have some good things added as it would be pointless for me if its just the resolution fix, I dont have an HDTV.

They usually require you to upgrade if you want to use any online abilities. Homebrews fun, like on the psp, but considering the ps3 is $600 and hard to come by, I’m not risking it to play old games like mario.

It was supposed to be fixed in 1.30 — but wasn’t. And I’ve confirmed it still does not upscale properly with 1.31 either.

so let get this straight, the ps3 right now doesnt support a 1080i tv? cuz I have one & I dont have a ps3 yet so……..

it does support the 1080i resolution. But if your tv set is older and does not support 720p, which most games are in, the PS3 will not upscale to 1080i — you’re left with a 480i or 480p picture. Only if the game supports 1080i you will achieve that res.

its an HDD support for ps2 games ie FFXI.
Nothing big. Doesn’t say anything about security :p

I just went out and bought a 55″ Sony SXRD with HDMI. It has 720p as well as 1080p. I forked out $99 for the 3′ HDMI cable (jesus). I got my PS3 a just over a week ago but, believe it or not, I’ve yet to take it out of the box. Why? Well I can’t really play it because it’s supposed to be for my Kids’ christmas (yeah right) but they are always around. And I’m hoping for a working B-Ray/DVD Loader. 12 more days… Come on guys. Anyway, I hope it upscales properly because my TV produces 1080 all the time. You can stretch 480 and 720 to 1080, but the TV doesn’t seem to do it so well, it looks kinda crappy.

RelicWard how much did you get that sxrd for? I’ve been searching for a 1080p for a while, but most require me to sign over my soul to satan.

$1799 for the TV – $399 for a five year warranty – $99 for the 3′ HDMI cable (it was $129 for the 4′ cable I think I’ll make mine reach…)

P.S. I don’t have that much cash lying around but I didn’t have to sell my soul. I charged $1000 of the bill with no interest and no payments until 2009 :)

Sweet greg, you prob have me beat in clairty and contrast. I wanted an LCD but I knew my children would destroy it so I went with rear projection. Still looks good tho. Now I’ve gotta ge me a free to air HD Sat reciever so I can get all of my HD channels for free!

I had a samsung rear projection, but it lacked support for 720p — it was only 3 years old too. Hence the reason for my upgrade. This is what you want:

the SonicView-8000 fta hd receiver. :)

Yeah, she’s gonna be sweet. But whats up with the 1080i? Does Dish Network not broadcast at 1080p? Does anyone? I’ve got a Coolsat 5000 Platinum now and the upgrade will be welcome but although you cant really tell the difference between interlaced and progressive while viewing, you sure as hell can while video editing…
Sorry about the topic change here… HD Rocks!

I wonder how much support that this HD reciever will recieve. It’s cheaper but I don’t wanna get stuck with a no bin reciever.

not sure about Dishnet, but I know BEV broadcasts their HD at 720p. I’d safely assume Dishnet does the same.

Well I suppose TEN at 720p is better than SD at any rate! Actualy, I only watch the NASA channel – no really… :P

Yeah, I could of bought a cheap no name brand. But I figured after spending $600+ on the PS3 and $2200 on a HD TV – what the hell, I’ll go with the 24k gold monster cable. What kind of a dumbass spends $3000 on hardware and buys a crappy connector?

BTW greg. I just saw a commercial for Direct TV (the one where Jessica Simpson gets her ass smacked) and they are broadcasting HD at 1080i. I’ve seen the commercial before, I was just too busy checking Simpson out to listen to what she was saying… :P

@RelicWard:

I guess you have the american model of the 55″ Sony SXRD1 (KDS-55A2000) ?

It only has the WEGA Engine™ with DRC-MFv1 inside.
The european version i own, has the Bravia Engine Pro with DRC-MFv2.5 which renders SDTV in same/better quality than 1080i signals over sattelite.

1080p over sattelite/dish network: it will be 5-10 years before 1080p can even be considered ;-)

HDMI-Cables ala “monster”: as someone said: “These “designer brand cables” (I call them) are the biggest ripoff in electronics.” ;-)

If you have to connect a TV over 10 meters you need a high-priced quality cable (to watch 1080p) but with everything under 1.5m a cheap HDMI cable does as well.
