An interesting thread over on the official Playstation board with regard to graphical glitches on the PS3 when playing certain PS2 titles… It primarily affects games which are only capable of outputting at 480i.
I decided to start this thread because many of my PS2 games were looking horrible on my HDTV when played through the PS3. The games look fantastic when I play them via component from my PS2. So I used the SAME component cable on my PS3, kept the picture adjustments the same, and even set the PS3’s output resolution to 480i to emulate what the PS2 was doing. Here are my results on the SAME TV. Since I am setting up my PS3 to the SAME conditions that my PS2 outputs, I do not believe this is a TV issue as some here have asserted. Sony thus far has played dumb when we call them. Look at the screen caps below and you decide.
The screen shots do in fact show considerable differences. This may provide some insight for anyone else experiencing the same problem.
See the full thread here.
Thanks for the email Steve.
Comments (6)This doesn’t come as a surprise to me, but it may for some; especially those Microsoft fan boys out there… With the power invested in IGN they have officially named the PS3 best new console of the year!
Console launch years only come around twice a decade or so, and they’re always guaranteed to be exciting years. The 360 matured dramatically since this time last year and its second-generation titles like Gears of War and CoD3 made the PlayStation 3’s job of shocking the world with its immense power rather difficult.
Congratulations PS3!

Comments (29)No news on the hacking front; however, the online PS3 store is starting to pick up… You can now download the Gran Turismo HD Concept for free! Yeah yeah, old news — it came out Christmas Eve. But personally I just downloaded it and gave’r a whirl… My god, it’s beautiful at 1080p! It features a few unlockables — something to keep you busy for a bit.
Also, if you’re in Japan or Hong Kong you may notice Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection has hit the online store and is available to purchase for 2000 yen or $125 HK. Hopefully a North American version will be released soon. Tekken 5 supports full high definition at 720p and 1080p! I bet it looks astonishing.
Comments (6)Update: I’ve added the 1.32 firmware download. My apologies for the delay. :(
Update: What’s new in 1.32?
Damn… Sony with yet another firmware update — 1.32 is now available. Again, no word mentioned on the official Sony PS3 website; however, in the meantime you can fetch it via Network Update from the XMB. Hopefully someone soon discovers the firmware vulnerabilities that continue to be patched. :)
Once more information is received I’ll update this article with the details.
Thanks for the heads up mercurycougar871

Comments (17)Update: Finally — Sony has announced the release of 1.31.
What’s the diff?

Update: I can confirm that it does not properly upscale a 720p-only title (i.e. Fight Night Round 3) to 1080i; providing your current output resolution is set to 1080i with no 720p support. It will continue downscaling to 480i or 480p.
There’s no mention of it on the official Sony PS3 site; however, system software update 1.31 is now available for download via “Network Update.” I’m just grabbing it myself — check back to see what’s new/changed. Hopefully it corrects the whole downscaling issue for the older HDTV sets incapable of displaying at 720p.

Comments (9)You may have noticed PSone games now available via the Sony store on your PS3. Too bad you can’t play them on your PS3 yet. For the time being you require a Sony PSP to play these games. I’m curious to see whether Sony or the Linux community get these working on the PS3 first. We’ll be sure to announce it as soon as you can!
Comments (5)Sony has released PSOne games to play on your PSP via the Sony store on your PS3. To sum it up for you. You need a PS3 (we’ll see how long that takes). Games cost $5.99 to $10.99. You can’t play these games on your PS3 yet
Team Xecuter with something for your PS3 — snazzy stuff… It features:
When you connect the system announces the drive requires formatting etc and then promptly begins to prep it. All system settings are unchanged so they are stored internally to the PS3 and not on the HDD.
We can assure you that larger hard drives will be essential in the near future. After speaking to colleagues from the Playstation Scene, booting games from HDD is possible and not far off. As the games are blu-ray (17gb+ dumps available) then the larger HDD the better, and you wont get very large and cheap 2.5″ drives, however 250GB 3.5″ drives are close to $60 these days.
We may release a simple adapter first so you can hook up with ease right now rather than wait for release of the HYPERDRIVE, that won’t take too long at all to release.
“After speaking to colleagues from the Playstation Scene, booting games from HDD is possible and not far off.” *gasps* I’m sure you all know about the recent dumps that have been circulating… ;)
Stay tuned!
