Just booted up my PS3… To my surprise there is a new firmware update waiting to be installed — v1.11. It affects all systems starting today; as seen here on ign:
Comments (18)If you’re one of those lucky people who actually have a PS3 in their possession, be prepared for a new firmware update that’s going to affect all systems starting today. The update is v1.11 and it features an Account Management System Icon to your friends list. The feature itself was already present in previous firmware versions, but this time they just made it easier to access.
However, there is speculation among PS3 users that the updated fixed something else, since the browser seems to load pages faster, and the actual download itself takes more than a minute to download. We’ve heard of reports of up to 10 minutes for the entire update to fully download, and we experienced a 5 minute wait ourselves. Unfortunately the only documented change was the AMS, so we’ll have to take Sony’s word on it for now.
I just read about this “Red Kawa File Server” app — it essentially is a small web server that allows you to view & download files from your Windows PC over your wireless or wired network using the PS3’s web browser.
It supports a few configurable options providing some means of security; you’re able to specify a starting directory and define which directories can be shared for file download. By default “C:\Documents and Settings” is only approved.
If you’re not running Windows you can always configure the Apache web server to behave in the same manner.

Comments (3)PS3 & PSP owners may want to consider upgrading their beloved hand held to the latest 3.00 firmware to enable PS3<->PSP connectivity via “Remote Play.” Remote Play is currently only available on the 60GB PS3 unit (built in WiFi) and is supported with PSP firmware 3.00 — you’ll need both in order to take full advantage of this snazzy feature.
Also, the online Japanese PlayStation store is setting to release the first batch of PSP-compatible PSOne games for FW 3.00. The process to obtain and play these classic PSOne titles require you download via PS3 and remote-upload to your PSP. It’s reported early next year a firmware update will allow you to play these games on the PS3 as well.
Hopefully someone will discover a workaround for those less fortunate with the 20GB PS3 model — instead of waiting till next year for worldwide remote play.

Comments (5)Not entirely hard to believe is Mario on the PS3 via NES emulation under Linux. I’d imagine we’ll start seeing more things such as this — pretty cool!
Thanks for the email SkrappsteR.
Comments (20)As you’ve probably heard the PS3 is capable of running Linux PPC distributions — this includes Fedora Core 5, Ubuntu, SuSE, etc… Essentially any PPC Linux distro should theoretically work.
Sony has yet to release the “Other OS” installer which will aid in the Linux installation process; when more information becomes available you can read it here on Sony’s Open Platform website.
In the meantime, “Power Developer” has released Linux kernel patches (2.6.19), a bootloader, and some useful documentation — all tools required to make Linux boot on the PS3.

Just read this over at IGN; interesting…
November 3, 2006 - Just as we’d reported earlier today regarding Madden NFL 07, we’ve discovered that three more launch titles will require a firmware update before you’ll be able to play them. Much like what happens with the PSP, you’ll see an alert that says you must upgrade to a newer firmware version before playing.
Genji: Days of the Blade, Ridge Racer 7 and Resistance: Fall of Man will all require a system update to version 1.02. The update ships on the disc so that you won’t need to be online to download anything, but you should of course be able to update before the games come by hopping online.
Veerrry verrrrrry interesting.
