According to the latest issue of Famitsu (a Japanese magazine), Sony is undetermined to whether or not the PS3 will ship with a hard drive. Masayuki Chatani – Sony’s Chief Technology Office, believes that many users will want to add their own hard drive to the console, thus allowing the customer to define their own storage capacity. Sony has never officially stated that the PS3 will indeed be shipped with a hard drive.
At E3 this year, Sony attendees witnessed the possibility of a 2.5 inch detachable hard drive being added to the underside of the PS3.
Guess we’ll wait and see as more information concerning the PS3 is released.

I’m 100% for NO drive. It’s kinda like the same reason no one ever supplied a LPT cable with printers. It’s an expensive cable and adding it to the package only increases the cost of the package and odds are the cable wouldn’t even be the right length and you’d have to buy another one anyway.
If a drive is something you want then you are better off having to buy the one you want, at the size you want, on your own. Don’t think of it as “more money” out of your pocket because had they included it the unit would have been more expensive anyway.
In the long run this will be cheaper for the most people.
#1 is completely right! I agree that I would rather chosse to buy my own rather than getting a shitty small hardrive and then I might want a bigger one or find out i need or want a smaller one. I hope its not like the PSP, where it came with a 32meg crapstick that added like 20 bux to the final cost of the value pack!
Exactly! Much better comparison :)
well they should come with a hdd that can come off so people with plans to add a bigger hdd can. and adding a hdd is needed…people who play online know this. ps2’s hdd no one bought. it went to waste. same thing for ps3??? maybe. the online gaming for ps3 could be limited because not many people will buy a hdd again. I asked around, and people did say they wont. on many forums. downloadable content…idea will go in the trash because who will have an hdd to download stuff on. having a separate hdd didnt work with ps2 nor will it work with ps3. no hdd means xbox360 for me. i rather play socomIII on ps3, but i rather everyone have a hdd then let people buy their own(not everyone will). so they should add a free hdd in there and make it detachable (and no not their custom 2.5″” one…a regular 3.5″” (or wutever the normal hdds for pc are)). it will be better for online play.
psp is different, because the memory stick’s size is not affected online. but ps3 not having a hdd at all will affect online cuz people will want downloadable maps. (remember socom II and the new maps..only like 5 people in each room with new maps). and psp is different…people will buy bigger sticks for it because of the fact there is tons u can do with it. a portable everything.
i agree with number 4. number 4 makes more valid arguments. ps2’s hdd was a huge downfall. i dont want to see that again in ps3.
it also says that ps3 will be considered a super computer. lol, I already have supercomputer….3GHZ baby…
all I want ps3 to do is support different media sticks, play dvds, have a hdd, and play games. i dont need much else…cuz it would be pretty useless. I would rather buy a laptop to have a on the go machine then use my ps3. lololol
WTF HAX?!
memory cards are so old go xbox
je suis française et je comprends rien !
I totally agree with #4. Everyone I know has been expecting a harddrive for the ps3. If the person that buys it wants a bigger hdd, then they can upgrade, just like a computer. If they have to save to get one, then at least they have one to get them by until. I still dont have a harddrive for my ps2 becuase I didnt want to spend $100 and get a game ill never play. I would have gotten one recently, but i have been waiting for the ps3 and expecting to see that it has its own. We cant let xbox beat us guys.
I dont really agree with #4. Even though the PS3 may not come with a hard drive it is not the end of the world. i mean you had to pay £80 extra to get a hard drive with the xbox 360. So if sony sell a 20gb hard drive at around £60 it should all balence out. So this would help people who cant offered the full PS3 package with a harddrive and can go with a cheaper but same version (unlike the xbox which had a cheaper differnt core version) for less price.
IF the PS3 uses Blu-ray for games then it may not need a hard drive. But if You want any downloadables that use lots of memory like demo games then you may need one! You could store your downloadables on a memory stick or something but to buy a 4GB or 8GB memory card will cost loads of money!
head there is a hard drive with the ps3 but its seperate to buy so u dont hav to dish out on memory cards
i heard that the hd will be a standard 60-80gb one which is 3 or 4 times xbox 360’s
I think ps3 should come with a hard drive because if your an online gamer ( And what i heard is that most games will have downloads) You will want to download new maps, gear , etc………, but what i really want to know is will we be able to put music on our games like x-box and x-box360?
